McNabb might be going ... groin ... gone: Philly QB Donovan McNabb has been told to have surgery to correct the sports hernia he's been fighting most of the season. The operation would most likely knock him out for the remainder of the year and put former Detroit Lion signal caller Mike McMahon in the starter's role.

I predict a whirlwind love affair between the city and Mr. McMahon. It'll be a Christmas Classic, like Miracle on 34th Street. First no one will believe in him. Then a small boy starts to notice. Then that little boy will get the attention of some adults. Once enough people have noticed, this being Ill-a-Delph, they'll beat the living shit out of Mike. FINIS

He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned will immediately go on every talk show that will have him, telling everybody who will listen that McMahon has a stronger arm than McNabb, is tougher than McNabb, is more Irish than McNabb, eats more Chunky Soup than McNabb, and was the real reason he came to Philly in the first place.

Prior to 2004 McNabb was a solid, tough QB, with accuracy problems but legs that could make up for that. He exploded in 2004 which could be because: a) he finally acheived his potential b) he benefitted from T.O.'s talent (shudder) c) he was motivated by Rush Limbaugh (double shudder) My bet is that he never reaches the 2004 level again. He comes back; he plays decently, but his legs and groin no longer allow him to compensate for his accuracy issues. He plays a few more years then slides into obscurity. I hope I'm wrong because I like Donovan. He's a tough competitor and a class act. But if I was to place a bet, it would be that his time in the upper echelon of NFL QBs is over. Off topic: How many ex-Lion QBs have started games this year. McMahon, Frerotte, Batch...

McNabb has been hurt all year. He has no running game. He doesn't have a great receiving group. I think he's a very good quarterback who basically had all of the things that helped make him great disappear on him this year. He's not a guy you want attempting 40 passes a game, but there are maybe 3 quarterbacks in the league who are. The Eagles need to run the football more, and they've needed to for awhile. I dunno how serious his injury is, but if he's done for this seasons I suspect he'll be doing just fine (read: Pro Bowl) next year.

mcnabb is a much better than average qb in all aspects. iv seen him throw pinpoint passes through two defenders for the touchdown more than once...when he was healthy. and his running was superior...when he was healthy. even his awareness was far better than normal...well, u get the picture. if he can nurse himself back to old form, he should still be one of, if not the best all-around quarterback in the league. but in football, that is a big if.

But if you dont pay him you know he's gonna act a fool, whats he got to lose? I know all you Eagles fans hate TO, but dont you wish he were on the team now, atleast you would have one star on offense with DM gone. But oh well enjoy those Ls

I don't know much about the economics of the football but it seems that he agreed to a contract with the Eagles for much less than he was worth. Can't blame the Eagles for that one. The real shame here is that Donovan is class act you just hope he can recover and come back the same as before the injury.

I agree lbb, please dont disgrace this thread people. Remember, this thread is not about TO, or anyones favorite team. My bet is that he never reaches the 2004 level again. He comes back; he plays decently, but his legs and groin no longer allow him to compensate for his accuracy issues. He plays a few more years then slides into obscurity. Dzot i almost want to agree with you, however i think mcnabb will pull a randle cunningham. His career will be thought over, and then he will hit the top again even if for only a season or 2 most likely with another team. Forget the madden curse. Its the philly curse. Philly cant keep a superstar. Moses malone, Wilt Chamberlin, Charles Barkley, Reggie White, Peter forsberg for lindros?I cant believe Iverson has stuck around as long as he has. The city needs another Dr.J, Steve Carlton, Bobby Clarke. Winners.Does Forsberg have 1 more in him?

posted by RZA at 05:46 PM on November 17, 2005

McNabb showed alot of class in dealing with the infantile TO. And he's been playing hurt all season and still putting up great numbers overall. But I'm not worried, I've got McNabb, Eli Manning AND Big Ben on my fantasy team so I'll be alright (and I'm sure you were sooooo worried). During the Monday Night game they said Philly hasn't won a sports championship in football, baseball, hockey or basketball since 1983 (I think) and is the longest time a city with all four sports has gone without a championship so maybe IT IS Philly.

McNabb went to Mt Carmal HS in Chicago. Raised by good parents, who clearly taught him how to act. That being said. He is the most overrated QB I have ever seen. A great defense, good RBs, and decent WRs. These are the reasons why McNabb is even talked about. That and the oblivious east coast bias ESPN has. Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb are the same damn player.

Personally, I'd like to see the Birds rally around McMahon the same way they did around Koy Detmer and then A.J. Feeley three seasons ago. I don't know if anybody has noticed in the past, but this team tends to not throw in the towel when their QB goes down. I guess its that Philly pride thing.

Some Eagles want TO back, recent reports say.

posted by graymatters at 11:53 AM on November 18, 2005

From what I've seen, those Eagles are defensive guys, mostly, all of whom only pal around and roll with him and don't face the brunt of his constant undermining and deeply shitty attitude, every goddamned day. If Owens had said the same things about Trotter he'd said about McNabb, a lot of his so-called friends would be taking turns leaving turds in his locker.

posted by chicobangs at 12:29 PM on November 18, 2005

I would like to see T.O. play again for somebody. I wish the media could be banned from covering him. As I have said before, most of this latest crap has been Media generated and hyped. The fact is that several Eagles have come out and said that they would like to have T.O. back playing with them......

posted by daddisamm at 12:35 PM on November 18, 2005

If T.O> were to come back, he certainly be somebody to rally the troops around. Mc Nabb needs to hang it up for the season. That hernia things is a painful injury......

posted by daddisamm at 12:39 PM on November 18, 2005

those Eagles are defensive guys Without TO and a healthy McNabb, isn't that really all the Eagles have left?

posted by graymatters at 01:01 PM on November 18, 2005

Their O line is still pretty good, and Bryant Westbrook is no slouch, so McMahon isn't going to look like a total tool like he did in Detroit. Owens hasn't spent the last 18 months openly manipulating the morale of the defensive corps; in fact, I'd bet they're the ones he's gone to to bitch about the offensive guys. Of course the defensive guys are going to want him back. He liked hanging with them. Even Trotter, who should know better, is falling for this crap. If Owens plays in an Eagles uniform again, it's the end of Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb in Philadelphia. The team ain't big enough for the both of them. God, I hate this topic.

This reminds me of one time when I was in Manhattan the day after Thanksgiving with some friends, and (through a lack of planning and navigation) we ended up walking through PETA's annual anti-fur-and-stuff demo. PETA had got half the street and were yelling slogans and insults at the harassed biggest-shopping-day-of-the-year crowds who were trying to make their way up and down Fifth Avenue in half the sidewalk space that they'd normally have (because you gotta put the cops somewhere). They collapsed like wet cardboard when the irritated and surly bypassers started to yell insults back...stood there with their lower lips quivering, and then one intrepid animal rights activist in leather shoes and belt blurted out, "Shut up!" It brought down the house, lemme tell ya.
