Verlander Dominates as the Tigers Advance to the ALCS: I think this is number one," Verlander said. "The two no-hitters are obviously up there, but that's something a little bit different. This is win or go home. My team needs me. And I was able to go out there and have one of the better performances I've had.

Only Two Number One Picks in History Have Never Made the Majors: For 2004 number one pick Matt Bush, this summer would be when he finally joined his peers in cracking the major leagues. His long-standing battle with alcoholism, however, had other ideas.

Josh Gordon Fails Substance Test, Out for Another Year

It sounds like Justin Blackmon is on track to come back next year.

The Josh Gordon situation is sad. Have the Browns/NFLPA failed to give him the help he needs? Or has he really had every opportunity? I don't see him staying on the Browns roster after this.

Buckeyes Win College Football Playoff

I think the ability to motivate is much more important at the college level (e.g., Pete Carroll) so I would not be surprised to see Harbaugh will the team to at least 8 wins next year.

As bad as Michigan looked this year they may have the talent to let Harbaugh give sheer will a rest. Brady Hoke brought in two very good recruiting classes. If Harbaugh is any better than Hoke at developing players (and that really should not be hard) he should be able to field a team that can beat most of the teams on its schedule.

Jones, having done what he did, as a freshman,

Jones was a redshirt sophomore this season. J.T. Barrett was a redshirt freshman.

Buckeyes Win College Football Playoff

the rivalry with Michigan is now right back up into the "huge for the whole country" category.

Harbaugh is going to have to win some games first.

Watching the Cowboys lose because of the Calvin Johnson rule was extremely satisfying.

Cowboys Defeat Lions After Controversial Penalty Non-Call

Sam Martin may be the least clutch punter in the NFL. A ten yard punt in that situation is inexcusable.

The call was frustrating but the Lions have nobody to blame but themselves. Stafford had an opportunity to prove he belongs in the ranks of the NFL's elite and instead he lost two fumbles on the final drive. The Lions have struggled on offense all year and this was no different.

Can True Sports Fans Switch to a New Favorite Team?

I became a fan of the Wings, but because there wasn't a real tradition there for me there was nothing really concrete about that fandom and that allowed the Hurricanes to take root starting in '97.

That was a really bad time to switch from the Wings to the Hurricanes.

I also pull for the Patriots in the playoffs, which is the result of a combination of Tom Brady and the Lions never playing past December.

SportsFilter: The Monday Huddle

Rodgers has more talent and health on both sides of the field in GB than he would have in Texas without Watt.

DeAndre Hopkins is quickly becoming one of the best receivers in the league. Arian Foster is a top tier running back. I have a feeling Andre Johnson still has more in the tank than his quarterbacks were getting out of him.

All the talk about JJ Watt for MVP is crazy to me. If the Texans had Aaron Rodgers they would on their way to a division title.

I don't know that I really want Matt Kemp on the Padres, but Grandal hasn't seemed to be incredibly awesome since getting busted for PEDs, so...

Why not? Kemp has had some health issues but he has great when healthy. He played 150 games last year. His contract is a bargain for his talent, especially with the Dodgers contributing to pay some of it. He will certainly make it on the field more than Carlos Quentin.

Tide-Buckeyes, Ducks-Noles

Minnesota only lost to the two B1G division champions (including a 1-TD loss to Ohio State in November, when the Buckeyes were rolling), a Big 12 co-champion, and Illinois. That seems like a decent enough reason to put them at the bottom of the rankings.

I am not familiar with the teams outside of the Top 25 so it is possible that there are no better candidates. But Minnesota did not beat a single ranked team. The only seemingly quality victory they have is over Nebraska. I'm not sure a Top 25 resume is built on MAC schools and Northwestern.

Tide-Buckeyes, Ducks-Noles

I cannot for the life of me figure out why Minnesota is ranked. Was there really nobody else to choose from? Of course, for weeks the committee was touting TCU's victory over Minnesota as the reason to rank them ahead of Baylor despite TCU's head to head loss.

Tide-Buckeyes, Ducks-Noles

I find it hard to believe that f TCU or Baylor were Oklahoma or Texas they still would have been on the outside looking in.

Richard Sherman uses cardboard cutout to send NFL a message

That was fun, but I'm having trouble connecting the NFL rule about players wearing or mentioning outside sponsorships near game time with the rule about players talking to the media.

Fining Lynch $100,000 over a disagreement about press availability is pretty harsh.

I see it as a criticism of NFL hypocrisy. I think Sherman also points out that the NFL wants the players talking to the media but only on their own terms. Certainly not as far as having players do interviews for the sole purpose to endorse products but the point of the press conference was to be over the top.

I thought it was a very well thought out and pointed critique of the NFL. Doug Baldwin crouching behind a Subway cardboard cutout of himself was brilliant.
