For Some Athletes, Courses With No Classes Talk about a hand out instead of a hand up. The article is long but easy reading. At what lengths will some colleges go to keep these academic flops in the game?

JULIO FRANCO 2 year contract with Mets for 2 million plus The Mets agreed to a $2.2 million, two-year deal with Franco on Friday, luring baseball's oldest player away from NL East rival Atlanta and giving them a, well ... `mature' backup for new first baseman Carlos Delgado. Most free agents in their mid-to-late 30s can't attract a multiyear offer. Franco has one at age 47 and he wants to keep playing until he's at least 50.

Taylor Wins over Hopkins The fight got personal in the days before the two actually climbed into the ring. Hopkins mocked Taylor's speech impediment and called him a phony champion, while Taylor brought a doll with Hopkins' name on it to the final prefight press conference to say he was a crybaby.

Could Reggie be losing the heisman? An eight-month probe uncovers evidence that Reggie Bush and his family appear to have accepted improper benefits from prospective agents while at USC.

You've heard of "shanking a kick," but how about "shanking a kicker?" In a move I can only describe as "Tonya Harding-ish," Mitch Cozad, the backup punter for the University of Northern Colorado, stabbed starting punter Rafael Mendoza in his kicking leg. The link above has the straight info, and this one has the snark.

Legendary baseball player admits to steroids.
It's sad when players you followed for years come out and admit they were on the juice. As one official puts it "Wah-wah-wah-wawa-wah."

Off-duty police officer shoots Chargers LB Foley "My understanding is he was shot three times in front of his house by an off-duty officer and that he's in surgery," Foley's agent, David Levine, told The Associated Press.

This guy is big. But what does his status as one of the alphabet soup champions say about the heavyweight division?

On the same note- can one believe all four of the major heavyweight champs are currently white. Now tell me that doesn't make things even more strange. I think Valuev will be good for boxing as a side show and a champ. Americans will be back in the heavyweights. Brock may do it, although he isn't a real power puncher.
"Fields of Green: High School Pay." High School Football Coach's salaries in the the State of Texas via King Kaufman.

[A]nd as long as people demand more from their high school coaches than they do of their teachers, expect the higher pay grade to go to the former. posted by PublicUrinal Demand more from a coach- that's a joke right? Like is the coach going to make sure the school meets No Child Left Behind mandates or that students keep proper demeanor in the classroom. Sports are called extra-curricular and so is the coach. If high school football is so great and prodcutive it should fund itself privately-not by sucking up tax payer money. If high school football is so businesslike let it surivive in a purly economic market. Then pay the coach what the market is willing to spend, not some school board member.

Football is for a few kids. People trying to justify that sort of payday is sad. My opinion: Pay a teacher properly and privatize costly sports like football. I think the point Kaufman makes towards the end of his article is a good one -- from a pure economic perspective, paying coaches more than teachers make sense, but perhaps we as a society should question why public school teachers are valued so little (as reflected in their pay). posted by holden If is so purely economic then then it should fund itself privately. I saw the commercial for FNL series and laughed (especially the pep rally). Is that show geared for teens?

Gatlin is handed Eight Year Ban Another one bites the dust. At least this time the athlete in question has stopped denying he was doping and agreed to help do what he can to eliminate doping in track and field, even if it does come in the form of a "plea bargain" worthy of Jack McCoy on Law and Order. I would tend to take his mea culpa seriously as this pretty much ends his career. I'm not above accepting an "I'm sorry", even if was offered after he was caught.

Vikings' Robinson Arrested; Season May Be In Jeopardy Minnesota Vikings' wide receiver Koren Robinson, after a comeback season that saw him win the Korey Stringer Good Guy Award, the Ed Block Courage Award, a trip to the Pro Bowl, and a new three-year contract, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with one felony count of fleeing in a motor vehicle, two counts of DWI and three other misdemeanors.

Dyams, you hit home for talking about the stress of making a day-to-day salary for regular folks. Gosh that truly is a struggle. As for my own thoughts, I don't care if Robinson is an Alcoholic. Or if Alcoholism is disease. F-him and his behavior. What does society need to wait for this loser to kill somebody? Get the poor baby a tissue. Speeding to evade police at over 100mph is disgusting. Who gives a shit about his disease (if he even has one). Seems like when any "star" gets busted for intoxication they "have a disease" or "just need treatment" or "they had it rough." Hey, they can keep the bull and they can keep the shit because that's all it is.
Lonnie, we thought we knew ye His breadth and his touch were enough for Lonnie Baxter to shoulder Maryland to an NCAA championship, but his lack of height turned his NBA career to an unsurprising bust. His getting busted this morning on weapons charges is a bit more of a surprise.

billysaythis, Sounds like you are just an anti-gun. Guns don't kill people do. Get real! The culture of violence in my opinion is the problem. You may not like guns, but if you ever needed one you'd quickly change you mind. NRA is not a criminal. America as being sovereign can do what the people desire without the UN. For your sake billsaysthis I pray you never need a firearm. I suggest joining some political organization so you can work with you ideals. Take care.
