Sports Bio

I love Baseball, Hockey, Football and skydiving. Is there anything else in life?

I follow the Cubs, RedWings and Bears. I would however not mind if the StLouisCardinals completely dropped off the planet.

I am married happily to skydivedad and a WBC Costanza Winner!!

Blackhawks win lottery. Chicago won the NHL draft lottery Tuesday, giving the Blackhawks a reason to celebrate after missing the playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons. The Blackhawks, who will pick first in the June draft, had the fifth worst record and only an 8.1 percent chance to come out on top in the lottery.

Federation's report on limiting Euro imports has flaws. In a controversial new report that was quickly challenged by NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, among others, the IIHF contends leagues on this side of the ocean have been taking a haphazard approach to importing European players, bringing in too many and, more critically, often too early in their careers.

MLB Post-Season Pick 'Em, Elimination Playoff Edition It's technically the 163rd game of the regular season, but for SportsFilter's purposes the MLB post-season begins RIGHT NOW. Pick the winner of Tuesday's one-game playoff between Minnesota and Chicago, and get a leg up on the pick 'em competition.

The mighty hath fallen: Novak Djokovic knocks out Roger Federer in a straight-sets victory in the Australian Open semis.

This is the first time I have really watched any tennis and I am really enjoying it. I watched the Tsonga match yesterday and was impressed. Now mind you impressing me probably isn't very hard because I have never really watched. I watched Federer a little the other day and thought so this is what a great tennis player looks like. So many of you have been singing his praises on spofi over the last year. I am bummed that I will not be able to see him in the finals but will enjoy watching Tsonga again. I have not see Djokovic but I am hoping it is a good match. Wow I just watched Sharapova win it all. I think I may have a new sport I am fast becoming hooked on.

I agree with apoch. I did not know about his involvement with Ben Johnson at least I am not remembering hearing about it before. It almost sounds like while he was in charge he had a personal stake in it. He led a good witch hunt but I really don't think much justice was served. What is known about John Fahey, the man who is going to take his place? Will the witch hunt continue with guilty being said and the accused must bring evidence to prove innocence or will Fahey have to show evidence to prove guilt while they are considered innocent?

Lucky players ride loonie roller-coaster Minor leaguer Jeff Glass has a curious wage perk that Maple Leaf captain Mats Sundin would love to have. The 21 year old goalie gets paid in Canadian dollars.

Interesting post. I have always wondered slightly about how teams were paid. I say slightly because I never bothered to look it up to find out the answer myself. So another thing I wonder about now is "how do minor league players get paid when they are brought up to the NHL?" Are they still paid their minor league contract amount in Canadian currency or do they get a new amount (on a per game scale) in US funds from the NHL team?

"I expected it to be kind of a factory setting...and what I found was a very loving, somewhat casual environment...they weren't factories, they were more like gardens." Thanks for the fpp. I helps me believe that any child has the potential to be great. There has to be a love to start with and that can sometimes be influenced by what is watched by the parents. Parents are a big part of this if they are willing to pay with money and time for practice. Our son works very hard at hockey and really loves it. He wants to play in NHL and this gives me hope. He did get some athletic genes from skydivedad but all I contributed is the love of watching sports as I am not very coordinated at them. I can most definately give him any support he needs. I also think that sometimes it seems kids have an easier time learning because they have not learned fear or mistrust. If you tell them they can do it they believe it. Where as an adult has learned to mistrust people and the fear of the risk they are taking.

Baseball GMs Vote in Favor of Instant Replay. In a move sure to make at least one former SportsFilter member roll over in his grave/production booth, baseball GMs have voted to propose that MLB adopt instant replay for disputed home run calls.

posted by holden at 01:23 PM on November 06

I have to admit that I think baseball games have become too long. Saying that, I am really for instant replay for the purspose of homeruns. I think it would be an advantage to all teams. I did not realize that baseball had a 12 second rule. I really don't want to offend anyone by naming the ones I know but some pitchers take an extremely long period of time to get the ball to the plate. I think we can all think of some. It drives me crazy to see how many times time is called. A pitcher takes 30 seconds to get the sign and another 20 seconds to set his stance and then low and behold the batter calls for time and it all starts again. This is all well and good until you are an eastern time zoner with a west coast game and you do not get to bed to well after 1pm. Even 8:30 games go past midnight quite often. I don't think the instant replay of homeruns will add much more and the game could actually be quicker if they enforce the 12 second rule.

I guess I was mostly speaking to myself when I made the above comment. I do not hardly ever post but read everyday. I need to start saying when things have really made me think or have helped me learn something new. I in no way think we should just post for the sake of posting but maybe try to post on something you learned or liked about the article. Maybe someone else will not have seen that angle of the article and will go back and read it again and thus provoking discussion. I know sometimes people have pointed out something in the article that I completely missed when I read it the first time.

I really think that we need to give more attention to the "other" threads that lbb mentioned. If we raise the bar about what we post comments on then hopefully it will overcome the whole site. You are never going to have a site where everyone is pleasant and polite and considers other peoples feelings. Get real this is life and it rarely happens in person. The more attention we give the good fpp's and the less we give the poor ones the better. on edit: I guess everyone is basically saying the same thing. The #1 rule I remember that I learned on sportsfilter - "don't feed the trolls"
