SportsFilter Now Has a Practice Squad A new rule we're trying out: New members can't post a front-page link until they've been a member for a week and made 15 comments.

Great idea.

I'm hip. I'm hip.

That's a pretty good idea, rcade!

Woohoo!

I'm glad we're finally giving a form of the "cooling-your-heels period" a tryout.

Splendid. Do deleted comments count towards the 15?

Wish it would have been around for me to learn. Would have saved me some (even recent) embarrassing typo moments.

Excellent.

I imagine we'll see a lot of "I agree with ______" comments to make the quota, but I think it is as good an idea as any other. I also wondered about what jerseygirl asked, and I think that deleted comments should have negative values.

I just posted to the front page. I'm grandfathered in. Sweet. We must be approaching Halloween, because this place seems to have new candy every day. Thanks for all the hard work, powers that be.

Slipped mine in under the wire.

jg said: Do deleted comments count towards the 15? I recommend that deleted comments not count. I was going to say, if you're still in the cooling period and get a comment deleted, then start all over again. But I decided to be a softie, and just drop the one deleted comment.

I don't think deleted comments count.

I agree with terrapin.

terrapin: I also wondered about what jerseygirl asked, and I think that deleted comments should have negative values. Brilliant! Seriously, we should do this. Or what wickticktooie said. Also, what bullpenpro said. What's with all the new toys allofasudden? Happy Halloween!

Rock. With all sincerity, I think this will make a big difference. Thanks, Pantheon.

I'm so happy, I could kiss jersey right on the lips. With tongue, even. And I don't even like New Jersey!

After my latest read of front page comments, I want the ability to demote non-newbs to the taxi squad.

Great idea- however, I was thinking maybe something like 10 comments or so. 15 seems like alot, but whatever- its not like I have to worry about it. Either way good idea- and I completely agree with terrapin.

I'm so happy, I could kiss jersey right on the lips. With tongue, even. And I don't even like New Jersey! You're a liar. Your penchant for AquaNet and Bon Jovi speaks volumes, sir. Voluuuuumes!

heeeyyyyy, that's not nice. can we put a bannination on pot shots against new jersey?

Nice! As long as it's not retroactive...

On the topic of deleted comments, is there a certain ration of deleted/acceptable comments that equals bannination? Or is it a case by case basis?

This is good.

goddam: at least it wasn't a clam shot.

this is just great--I think

Yes. I agree. [this is good]

You're from Jersey? I'M from Jersey! Everybody... When the strip mall you like Is, like, right off the Pike That's New Joisey. Okay, now just the teamsters... Did you know that it is illegal in New Jersey to slurp your soup. True story. It is also illegal, in some townships, to consume a pickle on Sundays. Which, of course, is bad news for the clergy. /rimshot C'mon now... hey, New Jersey is also the one state in which the majority of "New Baby" announcements come in the form of a subpoena. /gunshot I'm here all week. Ow. Maybe not...

Can we get rid of this idiot? Or at least send him to New Jersey?

Well, if he gets off that topic he might actually have something to add. Maybe. I'm an optimist.

YYM's a culturist.

Timmerex is perfect! Rcade gets to test all the new guidelines and changes on him!

Well, if he gets off that topic he might actually have something to add. Maybe. Doubt it. But your optimism is admirable. Someone already deleted his first comment (which was crap also) as I was writing up and previewing a "Might I introduce you to the guidelines?" standard comment. This time, I did get to show him the guidelines, let's see if it helps. Question about the guidelines though for rcade and gary: Anywhere in the signup process, are they forced to read the guidelines? Maybe instead of a sports questionnaire to sign up, we should infuse a few random guidelines questions? Is there a way to randomize the questions? We could put some of the more 'popular' offenses to the guidelines as questions in the signup. Just a thought.

Yeah, and if any of this ever gets automated, like a spam filter, it's always good to know about in-duh-viduals like this to test your filters on. Maybe someone could explain to Timmerex that if we don't allow people to get into pissing matches about whether [fill in the blanks] is a sport or...I dunno, performance art or something, then we're hardly going to indulge in someone's spit-spraying caps-lock-enabled tirade about whether Hispanics are a culture or a race. Edit: along the lines of what jerseygirl said, I really favor forcing them to read the guidelines or at least go to the page and click an "I accept". I also would suggest adding text to the effect that if you have any questions about the guidelines, you should ask now rather than accepting, and if you have doubts about your ability to adhere to the guidelines, you should look for another forum.

Do comments posted in Locker Room threads count or is it only comments on FPPs?

A great idea. I've been mainly a reader with the occasional comment, but some of the comments are way over the top and nothing to do with sports or the topic.

This is good. This will prevent the snappy quick hit people who are just reacting in a T.O thread or someone disparaging their local football team. Ah, people who like football are pederasts, anyway. All of 'em. It's science.

Not that anyone asked my opinion, but I don't think Lockerroom comments should count towards the 15 count. The 15 count, I'd think, is more or less to prove you can contribute sports related opinion/commentary to the site in English, understand the site, the guidelines and the overall SpoFi goals and don't type like you're slamming your forehead against the keyboard... The lockerroom tends to be very loosey-goosey as far as the strict guidelines. It's not a good place to cut your teeth with SpoFi. Allowing the 15 comments to be spent in the lockerroom is akin to being issued a drivers license when all you've demonstrated is you can putter around a parking lot. But since the new pony truck has pulled into SpoFi Station, any chance of getting a flagging system similar to MeFi? I think that would help lots. Could flag the crazy/stupid/inappropriate comments for the mods, add comments as favorites to bolster positive contributions, etc.

I'd flag it.

Anywhere in the signup process, are they forced to read the guidelines? No, though we've talked about it. I'm not sure if it would help someone like timmy. Members who come in so brashly either shape up, never come back again, or keep yelling. In the case of number 3, it's bannerization time.

I thought the noun form was "bannination".

In the case of number 3, it's bannerization time. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Bannerization? Oh, oh no ... HULK SMASH NOOBS!!!

Locker Room Comments don't count towards posting on the front page. What's with all the new toys allofasudden? SportsFilter has new server smell. I'm taking it for a drive.

Yes. I agree. [this is good] You crazy Vox users. Yeah. Vox. That's it... but I agree too.

The lockerroom tends to be very loosey-goosey as far as the strict guidelines. meTs and caRdinals sux!!!1 GO TIGERS!!!!!1

SportsFilter has new server smell. /pictures a cardboard pine tree hanging from an ethernet cable. I like the new look archives, and that the big gray box that covered up the first thread in the archives is no longer there. Thanks again fellas.

I agree with the above comment(s).

I'm taking it for a drive Do you have a licence, or are you just puttering around the car park? Although constructor/drivers do have special dispensation.

No puttering!

There is one problem I have with the archives. If one is searching by topic, the only FPP's listed are recent ones. The reason I see this as a problem is if someone is looking for a not so recent FPP on a certain topic, but does not know what month it is from, it could be a hassle.

If there is a new server can I get my lockeroom interview back? Please? *puppy dog eyes*

*puppy dog eyes* You had me at "If".

I don't think I've tried being loosey-goosey before. Is that like willy-nilly?

It is. But different than artsy-fartsy, though.

I can't do artsy-fartsy. I don't have a beret.

And let's not forget the purpose of all things, hokey-pokey.

I prefer the hanky-panky.

I'd settle for Howdy-doody, though I prefer Heidi Duty, if you know what I mean.

Great googly moogly.

Jeepers creepers, chico.

Holy Schnikes!

I know it doesn't ryhme, but it's Farley and needed to be said.

All these new toys! Its just, well, its SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOC IOUS!

Sweet Sassy Molassy!

jojo I think you mean Holy Moly. Although you could use Rollie Pollie for Farley.
