GO LEAFS!

SPORTSFILTER CHAMPION

2006 MLB Playoffs Confidence Pool
WINNER

4th place: Sportsfilter OlymPicks

Games I have attended:
* a Raptor double overtime win, in which Vince Carter tied the game in the last seconds with a rare four point play.
* an Argos win that put them into the Grey Cup, which they consequently won (in the Gretzky-Candy-McNall days.)
* a Toronto Rock game. Nothing to add.
* a Blue Jays game, which I spent the last two innings in one of the SkyDome bars watching the Leafs play
* a number of Maple Leaf games, from second last row greys in Maple Leaf Gardens to second row gold in the ACC.

Best game I have ever been to: a Leaf OT comeback victory against the Flyers, during game 5 of the first round of the '99 playoffs. The Leafs then went on to win the series in Philly. I got the tickets off of my History teacher (one of the biggest Leaf fans I knew!)

I fell asleep during both of the Blue Jays' championship winning games. Baseball ZZzzzz.

Ice Hockey gets its own Champions League: : the Victoria Cup. Beginning 2008, the IIHF plans on hosting an annual exhibition series between the top three European teams and an NHL franchise. A likely alternative to that quiet but old topic: NHL European expansion

Vancouver 6, H. Sedin (I was gonna pick Thomas too but having the same picks as owlhouse, whom I'm tied with, seemed like I wouldn't make much progress)

Two stupid hand balls lead to the results in both of the early games (although it is worth noting that the red card for Serbia a few minutes earlier seemed to inspire them to their most lively play of the day). Will Germany or Australia continue the trend?

YES! But the damn refs didn't call it. And that red card was bullshit. And the diving from the German non-German players was annoying, glad they got carded. And as a Pole, I'm conflicted about the first two opening German goals being scored by, er, Polish born players.

Canada captures gold

Man, I keep seeing everyone saying that this is the new 72 Summit Series. That this will be remembered by the generation for the rest of their lives. A great day for Canada. Yadda yadda... and it seems as though everyone has already forgotten 2002. Fuck, 02 was the BIG win for me with a far more legendary team (Lemieux, Yzerman, Sakic.) The first Canadian win with a pro team at the Olympics. The first gold. The loony in the ice.

This is just a repeat.

US Sets Record for Most Medals at Winter Olympics

By official Olympic tallies, and indeed most worldwide tallies, total medals is meaningless. What you count is total golds -- champions -- rather than runner-ups. The US and Canada are mostly unique in the world in that they tally totals. I can't remember exactly when this started but I think it came as a response to constant Soviet domination.

And as an insecure Canadian used to constant Olympic disappointment, once in my life I want to say: congrats USA on being the first place and second loser more often!

SportsFilter: The Thursday Huddle

Just a general observation, but I'm in France at the moment and I'm watching the Olympics on French TV and despite some of their lack of knowledge about certain sports (curling, hockey) and the language barrier (my French isn't all that great) and obvious French bias (duh), the whole experience is making me never want to watch the Olympics in North America again. I hate NBC broadcasts. I enjoyed CBC. No idea how CTV is handling it. But, compared to French TV, those are all shit. And they're all shit for one reason and one reason only:

NOT A SINGLE FUCKING COMMERCIAL. EVER. The only time I see a commercial is when they end the broadcast on one channel and I don't switch to the continuing channel fast enough. Let me tell you, watching coverage like this gives the games a kind of flow that I never saw before. It becomes such a time sink.
