Legendary Canadian sportscaster Don Wittman dies.: A sports broadcasting renaissance man that covered any and every sport around, from NHL hockey on HNIC and international hockey to the Grey Cup to curling, but he will forever be known as the voice of Canadian olympic track gold.

Ice Hockey gets its own Champions League: : the Victoria Cup. Beginning 2008, the IIHF plans on hosting an annual exhibition series between the top three European teams and an NHL franchise. A likely alternative to that quiet but old topic: NHL European expansion

Wendel Clark is Barry Melrose's cousin : according to Wikipedia's "List of Family Relations in NHL". There's also the List of second generation Major League Baseball players and many other random lists of sportspeople.

Cito Gaston with the Jays. Cliff Fletcher with the Leafs. Did I travel back to 1993?

It was a good win. Made up for the disappointment at the Euros right after the race.

ehhh. At least I picked the winner.

I say just stick with the classic CBC Sports intro and leave it at that. I'd rather have that than an open contest for people to submit their shit -- knowing HNIC's love affair with super-rural Canada, you're going to get nothing but shitty wannabe rockbands from places like Wawa or Moosomin, Saskatchewan.

There wouldn't be so much flopping around if the refs actually called offensive fouls. Which they rarely do. Especially with marquee players, which is total bullshit. I dunno. I've watched a lot of playoff games this season and a bunch of games down the regular season stretch and the thing that most bugs me about the NBA is the totally inconsistent refereeing.

So, like, if no one for Pittsburgh scores a goal do we all get one point?

Oh nice. I jumped up into contention for a medal. Doubt I can win this with that point disadvantage, but here goes: DET in SEVEN Datsyuk and Malkin Osgood for MVP (Though it's a tough one. I'd say Osgood would win it if the series lasts no longer than 5. Otherwise, who knows. A similar case can be made for Fleury -- who'd have ever imagined that?) Is Franzen expected to be back for Game 1? One more prediction: this is going to be a great series, even if the potential for a 4,5 game blow out is there.

It's like that in the NHL. It's 4 on 4 followed by shoot-out... until you hit the playoffs where the games really matter and it's "play to win". Period. Of course, historically with the IIHF they never did the full intermission and full OT period anyway... just 10 minutes and a shootout. Whatever. I'd rather the game be settled in a weird 4-3 powerplay than a shootout. Great game though.

Interesting. I was not aware of this. It seems like every month there's a different film festival in Toronto (there's a photography film festival going on now, as part of Contact. In and Out Gay and Lesbian film is soon. Hot Docs is just over. etc)

And here's the (not up to date) Confidence Pool leaderboard, since it's been bumped off the front page.

Detroit in 5 Zetterberg, Morrow Pittsburgh in 7 Hossa, Briere (though I'm tempted to go with Umberger, but I think that was just a total fluke)

Yes. This has happened a few times. They start the third with whatever time was left. Blow the whistle when it's done and then start the proper third from centre ice. It's basically at the ref's discretion.

Very sloppy indeed
Six day suspension for making a crude comment about his ex.
Meanwhile, boarding somebody head first and causing them to be injured for months? That's three.
Way to prioritize, NHL!
