Sports Bio

Used to be redsoxrgay........ finally changed my screename!!

My favorite moment was meeting Yaz. I got him to sign my New York Yankees cap, which was freakin hilarious. I've been to a few games, including Yankees games. Hopefully I can go see the New York Giants play soon- they have a great team put together for this season. For basketball, I like the Knicks, who honestly flat out blow. I follow UConn for college sports, and have been to a few basketball and Football games.

It took me seventeen years to get three thousand hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.

Spitz spits fit US swim legend Mark Spitz won't be on hand in Beijing if Michael Phelps breaks his record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics because, he says, no one bothered to invite him. Should he be reacting this way, or is he simply overreacting?

Madden 2007 John Maddens latest version of Madden 2007 is sure to be the best yet. But have you ever wondered how the gamemakers come up with the player ratings? A very interesting article about the complex rating system of Madden 07.

Favre Saga Ends with Trade to Jets Brett Favre's month-long effort to get back to the Green Bay Packers ended with his trade late last night to the New York Jets.

posted by rcade at 09:21 AM on August 13

In my opinion, this doesn't do a whole lot for the Jets. Yes, it makes them a better football team. It also makes them a relevant part of the city again. (After the Giants won the Super bowl) What this doesn't do is anything for their future. They have a good young guy in Jerrico, and have some nice pieces. But even after the veteran help they've brought in, I don't feel like they can compete in the AFC East. More specifically, I don't see them competing with the Pats. If they make it to an 8-8 or 9-7 season, ill be truly impressed.

The more logical option would be developing Clemens. Let him play, let him grow. Keep Chad as your backup, let him tutor Clemens. When you have a young QB with potential, you must stick with him. Bring pieces in to build around him. That's how you build a winning team, a dynasty. Look at the Giants and Eli. Sure, he was a more flashy scenario, but it's the same deal. Very few teams win simply by bringing in Veteran's. The Jet's would be better suited retooling now, preparing themselves for their new stadium. Once Farve leaves, retires, un-retires, or sports his Wrangler ads full time, the Jets will be in a worse situation than they're currently in. By then Parcells will have his way with Miami, and winning will be even harder.

This move cannot be good for Clemens confidence. Yes, it's a smart move now, but I get the hunch it will come back to bite the Jets long-term health. (Like many of the moves the Jets make)

At any rate, im glad as can be the Farve saga is almost over. =D

Should Fantasy Sports Be on the Front Page? Considering the popularity of the leagues here, and the work being done by the users who start them, should we consider moving the Fantasy Sports category to the front page, now that such things are possible?

posted by rcade at 02:51 PM on August 13

I feel it can be used on the front page, but is probably more prone to problems than it's worth. Simply put, Yukon summed it up nicely. No.

Guess I didn't get the memo Newbies have to take a sports quiz to join SpoFi, but they can't view a chunk of the site "guidelines"? More inside.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 11:16 AM on May 30

Idea* Why don't we make a quiz based upon the guidelines already setup? This would mean they have to read them, and might actually understand them more throughly. (Even though most of them are self-explanatory.) An example question would be something like "Whats rule states that use of AOLisms isnt allowed"... etc...

It's time to pitch the DH. The most astonishing occurrence in the first six weeks of the baseball season — other than the decline of my World Series favorites, the Seattle Mariners, who played like the Seattle Pilots — was that the National League outscored the American League.

posted by BoKnows at 06:09 PM on May 13

I don't see why this is such a big issue. I personally feel that the AL shouldn't have a DH. Any change would due really, but both leagues should have the same policy. I think it's apparent that AL pitching has gotten much better. Young guys are now flourishing (at least in some teams), which is a key factor. DH has always been a hard position to fill, even though it's the easiest to do. A perfect example is Jason Giambi. He hates DHing, and his hitting stats reflect that. The difference was so dramatic that the Yankees have him playing first. (He's always been a horrible fielder) Sitting around on the bench makes it hard to stay loose, especially at the professional level. On the contrary, most pitchers hate hitting. They are endangering themselves on the plate, and on the bases. Of course this is true with all players, but most players are professional hitters, and practice hitting everyday. The lack of practice they take hitting and running the bases makes them more susceptible to injuries. (And we know how frail the majority of them are) While they could practice hitting, the benefits over a couple of AB's per game is most likely not worth it from a teams standpoint. Lets hope the issue is addressed so its fair to both leagues.

Who is Antonio Cromartie? Cromartie may be best known as the Chargers quaterback who led the league in interceptions last year and owns the league record for longest scoring play with a 109 yard return. But not many people know about the other aspects of Cromartie's life, life changing instances such as life-threatening illnesses, having his mom kidnapped at gunpoint, and a scary car accident.

On the cover of sporting news Cromartie looks jacked.. at first I thought it was a UFC fighter or something.. and cjets, I really doubt he'll realize how important that is. Or if he does, I would bet he never acts upon it. But great story nonetheless.

D'Antoni accepts Knicks' offer Mike D'Antoni is set to become coach of the New York Knicks, bringing his entertaining offensive style from the Phoenix Suns to a team coming off one of the worst seasons in its history. Can he make the Knicks contenders again?

posted by brainofdtrain at 04:48 PM on May 12

As a big Knicks fan, any name besides Thomas' is a big relief. With that said, i'm not sure D'Antoni has what the Knicks need. We all know they can score if they need to, but they cannot defend if they have to. I think the Knicks can become contenders pretty easily. They are in the Eastern conference, and were relatively close to the playoffs in the 1st half. Give them 2-3 years, most likely 3 years. They will have a good draft pick this year, and have lots of young talent. Wait for some contracts to finish, and you're looking at a legit contender. With that said, Avery Johnson would have been my first choice- I think he brings the style that the Knicks really need.

Im totally for the perm. link to the guidelines. Now that spofi has grown so much, we should really enforce the rules to newbies and vets alike. Also, I would like a link to the spofi merchandise. From when I joined, I was told there were t-shirts and mugs. Is this true? If so, then maybe we should have a link to that too. (if they exist)

Adam "Pacman" Jones is accused of sucker-punching a female attorney in a northwest Atlanta strip-club.

posted by hawkguy at 03:25 PM on January 17

Right now these are only allegations, but no matter how this turns out, by many he's gonna be percieved as guilty. Pacman is like OJ.. guilty until proven innocent. Adam should know better than to go near any skin joint.. but then again it is Adam Jones.

Double Amputee Can't Run in Beijing Olympics Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter dubbed the "blade runner" because he runs on prosthetics, has been barred from this year's Summer Games. "An athlete using this prosthetic blade has a demonstrable mechanical advantage (more than 30 percent) when compared to someone not using the blade," the International Association of Athletics Federations ruled. A May 2007 New York Times profile asked the question, "Is he disabled or too-abled?" A YouTube video shows Pistorius competing at the Golden Gala in Rome last year, his first race against "able-bodied" sprinters.

posted by rcade at 09:06 AM on January 14

Well, my argument was simply that people would go to great lengths in order to win.. not myself personally, or 99% of us, but that was my interpretation of the ruling. (Besides the fact they thought it was an unfair advantage) Maybe it seems a little extreme, or unlikely, but it could happen. I think chico put it in much better terms than myself.
