Sports Bio

I played little league baseball. I sucked. I played junior soccer. The other kids beat me up. I joined seventh-grade football team. I was cut. I learned to hate sports and the people that followed them. I became a writer, and hung out with artist types. They were more talented than I, and spurned me. Rejected and hurt, I came crawling back to baseball, my first passion.

I am a Brewers fan, and they're terrible. Goddam Brewers.

Is anyone else following the hearings today? I didn't want to post to the front page about this, but thought maybe an ongoing locker room dump on Clemens/McNamee/Congress would be enjoyable. Admins: delete if you feel this is out of line.

Cricket explained from an American perspective. I've always been a bit baffled by cricket, and news reports of matches do little to help. If you've ever wondered what's going on, this explains things pretty well.

Fightin’ Phils are World Series champions After 28 years, and two days of waiting for the rain to stop so that Game 5 of the World Series could resume, the wait is over.

Five Reasons to Watch the World Series So it's not Manny being Manny and shots of Ben Affleck sitting in the stands. It is still going to be a great series for all the right reasons.

Brewers Fire Ned Yost With 12 games to go in the season, the Brewers attempt to stop their meltdown by firing the manager.

posted by TheQatarian at 10:50 PM on September 16

the facial expressions of the Brewers I saw makes it pretty clear they got the message -- pick it up or your ass will be gone over the winter.

I don't believe this for a second. Who are they going to get rid of? Sure, they'll let CC and Sheets go, because they can't afford them. I'd bet you twenty bucks and a six pack of Milwaukee's finest they pick up Cameron's option, and as far as the young talent, none of them are going anywhere, with the possible exception of Hardy and Fielder, who would be traded to prospect-rich teams. And those two wouldn't be traded because they didn't "pick it up" - they'd be traded because the team already has competent replacements in the minor leagues and can bring in a huge prospect haul for them.

Baseball is a business, and this was a business decision. Tossing players away because they didn't make the postseason this year would not be a good business decision. I'm sure the players know this.

Brewers Fire Ned Yost With 12 games to go in the season, the Brewers attempt to stop their meltdown by firing the manager.

As a Brewers fan, let me say that this is sorta surprising, but not really. The timing is the "sorta" part, but if you've been paying attention it was clear that Yost's days as a manager were dwindling. Personally, I figured they'd wait until the team didn't make the playoffs to fire him.

But anyone who listened to the press conference last night heard all three involved (Mark A. as "the owner", Doug Melvin as "the management", Dale Sveum as "the deer in the headlights") talk about how it's on the players, now it's the players job to get it done, the players have to make this happen. Doug specifically mentioned Ned sticking his neck out for some of the young, slumping players and resisting pressure to bench them. My read is that a critical mass of the clubhouse got work to Mark A. that Ned wasn't wanted anymore. When you couple that with the fact that Ned Yost fans are extremely scarce among Brewers fans, plus this recent slump (which is overblown IMO), I'd wager that Mark called Doug and said, "Fire Ned, or I fire you and then I fire Ned."

It's weird timing, for sure, and to me it absolutely reeks of an irrational panic. Anyone who knows anything about Doug Melvin understands he's not that kind of guy, so there you go.

Also, the very cynical part of me sees this in terms of revenue. The fans didn't like Ned, and even though this has been a record-breaking year for attendance, part of me wonders if Mark doesn't see how much more could have been taken in if somebody more likeable were in the dugout... somebody named Robin Yount... who is now going to be bench coach...

Rays Walk Hamilton Intentionally with Bases Loaded The Tampa Bay Rays made history Sunday night, walking Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers on purpose with the bases loaded so they could face Marlon Byrd, who struck out to cement a 7-4 Rays win. The intentional walk was the first time in 107 years that an American League player was walked intentionally with the bases full and only the fifth overall since 1900. "You don't pitch to Superman when you have Wonder Woman on deck," said Rays closer Troy Percival.

Oh, like Superman totally wouldn't kick Wonder Woman's ass.

Considering he couldn't beat Batman, I wouldn't give him good odds to defeat someone with actual superpowers. Wonder Woman is pretty great. She kicked the shit out of a titan and beat Medusa.

As for deliberately walking in a run, I dunno. Part of me doesn't like that, but you can't really argue with the results.

Video: Diamondbacks Catcher Chris Snyder Fractures Left Testicle Although the injury report just says that Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder is on the 15-day DL with a groin injury, the team revealed that he suffered a "left testicular fracture" Monday when hit by a foul ball. "Suspended in the scrotum, a skin pouch below the penis, each testicle is surrounded by the tunica albuginea, a tough, fibrous covering that often takes the hit of trauma to the gland," according to UrologyHealth.Org. "Like the shell of an egg, it can be easily 'fractured' or shattered when confronted by a blunt or violent force." See the video.

So I guess baseball catchers don't wear protective cups? They do, but the pitcher threw a breaking ball.

KC Area Meet-up I was going to email all of the SpoFites that I know are in the Kansas City area, but I found that a lot of you don't have email addresses in your profile. Anyhow, Tinman and I have been tossing around the idea of a meet-up, including possibly beer, barbecue, and a Royals game. Of course, all are welcome, even you St. Louis area Mizzou fans. I know brainofdtrain and monkeyhawkare in the area. Also BoKnows is in the St. Louis area, and it's only a four hour drive. My email is in my profile if anyone is interested.

Every star in our cosmos is b-ball in origin. Understand this, and you may begin to understand Barkley, Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden. Once you've digested that, download the game. [via]

My favorite part was when the Representative (I didn't catch who, as I was listening on streaming radio) got all dramatic and called McNamee a drug dealer, and McNamee said "That's your opinion." Very Lebowski, and I lol'd.

Nobody is coming out of this looking good. Clemens looks like a weasel and like he's got a posse running interference for him, McNamee looks like a liar and a coward, and Congress looks like the grandstanding pack of egomaniacs that it is.

Mets Get Santana Pending a 24-48 hour window for ironing out a contract extension and completing a player physical, Johan Santana is headed to the Mets for four prospects - outfielder Carlos Gomez , pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey.

From where I'm sitting, this isn't going to sit well with me for more than 10 years. In the near term, it's going to drive me nuts to see Santana mowing down the Brew Crew a couple of times a year. But I can't wait until he's in the HoF, and I can tell kids and grandkids "I saw him pitch." There will be Cy Youngs.
