Arsenal — I have played and loved soccer all my life, but have never been able to get behind any of the many American league teams that have popped up over the decades. I used to attend Washington Diplomats games as a child and one of my most memorable sporting moments was traveling to Giants stadium to see Pele play for the Cosmos. I have no real reason to support Arsenal, per se, but as I have read nearly everything Nick Hornby has written—including Fever Pitch—I feel like I have supported them for ages. I have attended two European matches — a Championship League match between Watford and Wolverhampton in December 2001 and a Premiere League match between Fulham and Wigan. The Changing Face of English Football: An interesting interactive map of current Premiere League football teams comparing place of birth (not nationality) of each teams' players this season to that of 1989/90. The bar graph below the map shows the distance a player was born from their current team's home grounds. Click on the teams names above the map to reduce the clutter and see how the newly promoted compare to the firmly entrenched. At the end of the article there is detailed information—and complete squad listings from both compared seasons—for each team competing this season.

52 - 26 = £10,000: Hoping for "good luck" Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner has decided to change his squad number from 26 to 52 "because it's a special number to me personally, and I hope that it brings me good luck for the new season." But it's gonna cost him....

Ungentlemanly Conduct: A referee ordered a penalty to be retaken when an opposition player broke wind as the ball was kicked. Manager for the team with the ... offending ... player was quoted as saying that "this has come at a bad time in the season as we don't have sponsor and we are looking for a new sponsor for next season." May I suggest Beano, sir?

March Madness Chat: I created a March madness room on the campfirenow site and am idling away on the #sportsfilter chat in case anyone is watching the tournament and want some company. For more information, check the wiki entry on sportsfilter chat.

chiming in to say I agree with what bperk said: "I like moderating that keeps the discussions civil and mostly intelligent, but not censored".
In fact, rcade, since this has come up as an issue, I would suggest adding a checkbox on the signup page making someone state for the record they are over 13. I know that kerrycindy is the parent with the account, but I think since we aren't PG-13 it is probably a good idea to state that somewhere, so parents can make the decision for themselves without having to comb the archives, etc.

It was the sixth inning. From an ESPN article:
The first came in the sixth inning, when Johnny Damon thunked a broken-bat pop-up right back in Lee's direction. The rest of the infield backed off to let Lee catch it. But they burst into uproarious laughter as Lee barely moved, then one-handed it as casually as a guy flipping Frisbees on the beach."When he caught that, I was just, like, wow. I mean, WOW," Howard chuckled. "He was just so, I don't know, nonchalant."
"Hey, I caught it. He was out," Lee deadpanned. "So that's all that really matters."

The way Lee nonchalantly handled Damon's popup (6th?) and then fielded a check swing and patted the runner (forget who) on the butt with the gloved ball, you could tell he was super confident.

So his dad was a good coach. Doesn't look like he was a good father.

Ahhhh, that was a satisfying win. Had to mute the TV announcers who spent 3+ hours stroking Favre's .... ego.

What rcade said, only in a less reserved and nice manner. Shoot the messenger much?

And the next step is to allow video cameras to call balls and strikes.
Sorry, but I think IR sucks. Let the humans play and officiate and make mistakes. Perfection is boring.

Every 30 seconds, they were either praising him or cutting to a shot of him.
Exactly what I expected, and why I was true to my word in the signing thread months ago and did not watch the game.

It doesn't matter what the guy said. It's like when Zidane head butted the Italian player in the World Cup. Zidane was an idiot to respond. I don't care what the guy calls your mother or sister.
Unless you are 12, like I was when a player on the other soccer team said he was going to break the other leg of the lady yelling in the stands. He didn't know it was my mother, and that she was dying of cancer. Well, not until I jumped his ass right at that moment and punched him repeatedly while crying my eyes out. I'm pretty sure I got a red card, but it was worth it.

I am confused to. Maybe some moderating has occurred in the mean time.

I don't care for Telemanjaro (looks heavenward for lightening strikes), but Jerry Jones' response was the right one. The rules are already in place: if you hit it, you re-kick the punt. No advantage/disadvantage to either team.

Since I'm going to believe that it's safe to assume that you are in fact human, you'll be watching just like the rest of us
No. I won't. I don't watch reality television for the same reason. I have no interest in Bret Favre the player because I have no interest in Bret Favre the asshat.
And notice I am not someone wishing him injury, harm, loses, or anything else negative. I don't do schadenfreude either. I did mention looking forward to his playing against the Steelers' because I am a Steelers fan* and they have an awesome defense (again).
* also note I didn't rise to your smack talk about the Steelers above either.

NFL's Dirtiest Player: Hines Ward
I think it is a bogus and unscientific poll. Where is the data for flags and or fines? Whoever tops that list—unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, fines for dangerous hits, etc—is the league's "dirtiest player." I think too many of the respondents had their bell rung by one of the hardest playing wide receivers ever. Sour grapes.
For the record, this Steelers' fan was glad to see Joey Porter leave the organization. He was and forever will be an asshat.
What pisses me off is how Ray Lewis is having his reputation redefined by the networks. Now he is an inspirational player, a teacher. When Steve McNair was murdered ESPN did a whole special interview with Lewis where he went on about how he is a role model for McNair's kid(s?). Ray Lewis is a thug, and always will be. That hit on Chad Johnson was as dirty as they come, but now he is Saint Ray the mentor. Grrrr...
