Here are your winners:
O redsnare
O grum@work
O wingnut4life

Both wingnut4life and mkn finished with 306.5 points, but wingnut picked Finland higher to win the tiebreaker and come away with the bronze medal. mkn, like a good Canadian, takes fourth place.

The leaderboard has the complete standings. Feel free to work out the rest of the tiebreakers if you're really that worried about seventeenth place.

Thanks for all the gametime chat and updates, everyone. It was huge to those of at work with no television access.

And of course a big thanks to njsk8r20 for having this great idea in the first place.

Ccngratulations to the winners (and loser chico). 1/2 point, 1/2 point Finland couldn't give me 1/2 point for the costanza.

Oh well enough whining, congrats to all again. Thank you DrJE you did on awesome job with this. It was a real pleasure to spend the olympics with all of you!

I, for one, would like to acknowledge my lifetime of following the sport both at the profeessional and international levels, dating back to since I was in diapers (so, well, since just after lunch) for giving me such a huge knowledge base to ignore on my way to this ignominious and sucktacular result.

I couldn't have gotten to where I am without all of you, each and every one of you, doing a better job of picking than I did.

DJE, it was a pleasure to stink out the joint. Your yeoman's work was both timely and phenomenal.

I would just like to say damn you Canada and the United States.

Dear winners: I hate you deeply.

Thanks for running this Doc. You rule! If you have the time/ambition, I would love to do this same type of pool for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Does anybody have a total goal count for the medal rounds?

Comment icon posted by NoMich at 6:06 PM CDT on February 26

Well the score was 3-2 today and 2-0 yesterday so.........7?

Comment icon posted by skydivemom at 6:11 PM CDT on February 26

WAIT WAIT WAIT

I DEMAND A RECOUNT. Which one of you bribed the French judge!?

Comment icon posted by mkn at 6:30 PM CDT on February 26

DJE: good work on the list.

Stats:
  • People who picked Sweden to win: Samonson14 and tselson

  • People who picked Finland as their top team (and therefore got maximum points): UfezJones and rainbaby

  • People who picked all four semi-finalists: none

  • Number of people who picked 3 of 4 semi-finalists: 19

  • Maximum obtainable points: 333

  • Number of different combinations that would have yielded the top score: 24
    • since 5 teams had unique win totals, two teams had 3 wins, two teams had 5 wins, and three teams had 1 win
    • 1*1*1*1*1*(2*1)*(2*1)*(3*2*1) = 24
  • Odds that a randomly selected team would have had a perfect score: 1 in 19,958,400

  • SpoFi Collective score (based on average ranking for each team and wins for that team): 299 (rounded)

  • Minimum obtainable points: 161

  • Most overrated team by SpoFi Collective: Canada (then USA)

  • Most underrated team by SpoFi Collective: Finland (then Slovakia)

Odds that Grum is smarter than me -- 1:1
Odds that I get laid more -- 1:1

I keed, I keed!

So what do I win for being tied for 17th? The home game?

Comment icon posted by Samsonov14 at 7:37 PM CDT on February 26

I just want to thank the little people that helped make this possible:
DrJohnEvans, I LOVE YOU, MAN!!!
njsk8r20, for keeping the dream alive...
NoMich, don't hate the player, hate the game.
Grum, you are too smart for your own good. Can you make me a trophy? Oh, and damn you for beating me!
redsnare, damn you, too!
"I'd also like to thank my hands for being so damned good."
Oh, and mkn, it was me. (hee hee!)

To everyone else: Thanks for comin' out, good night and God bless!

A respectable eighth. And sole claim on Southern Hemisphere bragging rights.

I'm going now to put ice in my drink to celebrate.

That'd be great. This kind of setup is actually really damn easy. You take an hour or so at the beginning to input everyone's picks, and from that point on you have to spend maybe five minutes a day updating the win totals. Seriously. I spent practically no time on this after I set it up.

And with the system already set up, it'd be a piece of cake to convert it to 16 teams for the Stanley Cup tourney.

Egghead showoff............

I STILL LOVE YOU, MAN!

Comment icon posted by wingnut4life at 7:31 AM CDT on February 27

The first confidence pool I played in I came dead last, so at least I improved and I still get a high draft pick. Congrats to redsnare, grum, and mkn. Congrats to everyone else who did better than me.

Special thanks again to DrJohn.

Comment icon posted by njsk8r20 at 7:47 AM CDT on February 27

I'd also like to thank the Czechs for getting a bronze so I didn't look like a total idiot.

Mad props to all those who kept me updated on the games while I was stuck at work. You know who you are.

Comment icon posted by njsk8r20 at 7:59 AM CDT on February 27

At least I'm closer to the top then the bottom....by a whopping 2.5 pts. Did I ever misjudge FIN.

I'm beginning to lose hope that grum will be shut-out by the rest of us spofiers when it comes to fantasy hockey anything.

Comment icon posted by garfield at 8:02 AM CDT on February 27

Dear me: get a clue.

Ha! We've still got another month of the NHL pool, and I've got some ground to gain still. So you might get your wish.

One last stat:
The average score for a randomly chosen order of teams: 247

Thanks njsk8tr for the bright idea.
Thanks DJE for doing the computer type things.
Thanks everyone who participated in our little camp fire chats, which allowed me constant updates while trapped in the dank, urine soaked hell-hole I call work.

Congrats to the Snare for wining.
Congrats to Mr. Bangs for winning one of the funniest trophies I've ever seen.

You've seen it? I just sent it to him this morning (in that the hockey one is obviously different from the previously aired football one). I like it.

Thought there has to be room to come up with something for pool winners that has a little touch of pizzazz?

Comment icon posted by gspm at 10:15 AM CDT on February 27

Thanks njsk8tr for the bright idea.

Seconded! That was fun.

I thought it was going to look like football one. Let's see some pics gspm.

Comment icon posted by HATER 187 at 10:43 AM CDT on February 27

Well, I'll let him unroll it provided he is satisfied with the text upon it. It does look very similar, of course.

Can you come up with a gold, silver and bronze medal instead of the normal banner for our winners?

Comment icon posted by njsk8r20 at 1:17 PM CDT on February 27

I'd like to add to the chorus of thanks for njsk8r20 for the idea, and DrJohnEvans for all the technical support.

I would also like to let my many fans know that although I didn't win, I have always been more interested in the whole package, and my quality of life is my top priority. Finally, rest assured that I partied at an Olympic level during the last two weeks.

Comment icon posted by Amateur at 8:28 AM CDT on February 28

njsk8r20 - well, I'd need inspiration or some sort. It does seem imbalance to have an award for the bottom end that is relatively blinged out.

Chico has the Costanza up now.

Comment icon posted by gspm at 1:22 PM CDT on February 28

I've got an image in my head, I'll see if I can get it to the CPU screen tonight.

Comment icon posted by njsk8r20 at 1:38 PM CDT on February 28

gspm, check the campfire for my rough drafts.

Comment icon posted by njsk8r20 at 7:47 AM CDT on March 1

Holy shit, that Costanza Award is brilliant!

Comment icon posted by Samsonov14 at 1:52 PM CDT on March 1

Sammy - thanks.

njsk8r20 - had a look. further ideas? slap some text on there ya figure?

Comment icon posted by gspm at 7:52 PM CDT on March 1

Wow! Holy, um, crap-shoot. My lack of hockey knowledge putting me at a severe disadvantage to the SpoFi collective I resorted to the one thing that can win pick'ems and piss off those who know more than you; yes, not-so-random guessing. A close-your-eyes-and-pick-a-team (excluding those teams *ahem*Italy*cough*Latvia* who were locks for the basement), random selection based on average annual temperature by capital city.

/gloating

Sidenote: It's been a helluva month what-with an acquisition at work and my hard drive at home deciding to crash on me after a power-outage during an early February snow storm (which deleted my somewhat labored-over Olympic biathlon article, unfortunately).

So, I feel like a dick because I didn't get a chance to cover my event of the Olympics, let alone see much of any of the Olympics. I'm trying to watch some stuff off the DVR but it's kind of ridiculous at this point already knowing the outcome.

Don't worry worry guys, I didn't forget about your medals. I promise to have them completed before the Hoth Olympics.
