Brian Burke era begins in Toronto. After much speculation, Brian Burke was named president and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's already closed the book on Mats Sundin's return. He's got a lot of work ahead of him.

I like his concept of what a team should be. I like his blustery personality. I like the fact that he intimidates members of MLSE. I like that the players are scared for their jobs. I like the fact that Wilson is an old friend, which should bode well for him outliving his current contract. I hope he has the patience to do what it takes to build internally.

Cliff did ok, but he betrayed the longview, that being to collect picks and prospects like its easter morning.

Still waiting for an all around peformance from my squad. Cylinder deactivation is great in certain circumstances, but I'm trying to build some horsepower.

And is Friedel done? He looked horrible over the weekend.

The owners got their 'linkage' in the CBA so if revenues drop for some reason, so will Vinny's paycheck. Cost certainty remains. All is well. Except now the media thinks the owners are idiots rather than thinking the players are greedy. All is indeed well.

What do you get the hockey fan who has everything? Well, Graeme Patterson in Halifax has hooked up a synthesizer/organ to a table hockey game.

"The sk1 somehow had each key hooked up to each player (eg: A=goalie, C#=right winger etc...) and when the keyboard was played they would move around and such."

Just fill your roster with warm bodies. You can re-tool all you want until the ball is kicked, no transfer fees. And heed chico's warning. Key players can switch teams and put you over the 3 per team limit.

Nadal-Federer epic the most thrilling of all the Wimbledon finals I came here to see what the buzz was and was shocked to see Nadal/Federer hadn't been posted already. I only saw part of the match and sadly missed most of the last set, but it seemed pretty epic to me, especially during the 4th set tiebreaker.

posted by drumdance at 01:45 PM on July 07

I'm still amazed Nadal was only broken once because his actual serve isn't anything special. Improved, yes. But it usually takes a dominant serve to avoid breakage. And as great of a match as it was, Federer beat himself, imo. So many mishit balls and unforced errors. His backhand was nowhere near his average backhand. Nadal was fortunate to win the first two sets. And Ralph Furley very unfortunate to be down 0-2. But I have to say there is something to be able to conjure points when up against it, and Nadal was able to do that very efficiently. I'm still not sure how he was doing it, but he did it. And on a side note, Nadal's clothing sponsors need to do something about his underroos. Dude picks his ass constantly.

Dallas Stars Sign Sean Avery The NHL's infamous agitator, fresh off a playoff stunt that inspired a new no-mimes rule, signed a four-year, $15.5 million deal shortly after the league's free agent signing period began.

Holland explains himself here. [via] I'd take Avery on my team in a heartbeat. The guy is effective during the regular season against division rivals, and can win you a playoff series by distraction. He's worth every penny, even if you don't agree with his means.

From what I've seen Spain should take it because the RussD can be disorganized at times. If Pavlychenko(sp?) converts early, which is entirely likely, Russia may sit back a bit, exposing said D, and that could spell doom. But if Russia pushes the attack for at least the first 60, they might pull it out. Spain needs to bring Fabregas on earlier because the Russians are a physical bunch in the midfield, are were able to bully the Nederlanders. (sniff, sniff). And with a few slick passes behind the 18, Villa and Torres should bury at least 2, maybe 3. 3-1 Spain is my greedy neutral prediction, despite the fact the Russians looks like they are playing hockey out there on the counter. As for Turkey, there is no way they get past the Germans. Simply no way. This has been my first full on Euro watching experience, and it has thoroughly distracted me from my main preoccupation, for which I am eternally grateful. Oh, and a slight side note, the Spain Italy match was horrendously called. The Italians get away with murder. Perhaps because of their defensive reputation they recieve a large benefit of the doubt, but that quarterfinal should've been 2-0 at the half on penalties alone.

As the Apple turns... Willie Randolph is out as manager of the New York Mets, fired in the middle of the night 2 1/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September. In the middle of the night? Seems pretty cold.

rcade, you nailed it. This hoopla is about some senior writers getting scooped by the night shift intern on the news desk. These writers have been sniffing around the soon to be corpse and are mad they didn't get the first bite. For a myriad of reasons, isn't it common for these types of personnel decisions to be exercised on the road, or do I have a distorted memory of how professional sports franchises work?
