Dallas Stars Sign Sean Avery The NHL's infamous agitator, fresh off a playoff stunt that inspired a new no-mimes rule, signed a four-year, $15.5 million deal shortly after the league's free agent signing period began.

I agree with fraze. I don't Avery (nor Bertuzzi) anywhere near the Hurricanes' locker room.

His toughness hasn't really helped his teams thus far. What's the deepest playoff run that LA and the Rangers had with him in the lineup?
First Class?
Excellent baseball writer Joe Posnanski proposes a question:
"If you could start over, who would make up your Hall of Fame first class?"

If the '19 Black Sox were made eligible for the Hall, right now, would you put any of them in?
I just finished reading the very enjoyable Crazy 08 and now have a respect for Christy Mathewson that verges on awe. Even though he was one of those dastardly Giants (sez this Cubs fan).
Let's Play the Feud! On Sunday night's broadcast, Joe Morgan suggested (once again) Ernie Banks' career statistics were inflated by the "basket" in Wrigley's outfield. This being Joe Morgan, the basket was installed in Banks' final year with the Cubs and accounted for, at most, 6 of 512 career home runs. This being Joe Morgan, Cubs fans will have to get in line behind a number of computers before they hear an apology.

Besides, it looks like they angled the basket so that it won't actually create a home run out of a typical pop fly. Unlike the home run porch that hung out over right field at old Tiger Stadium. That thing ruled.
(Why is "home run" two words? It seems like it should be a single word.)
The World's Greatest Athlete? The Journal sought to identify the world's greatest athlete with an approach that, while not completely scientific, took a number of measures into account. A panel of five sports scientists and exercise physiologists was given a list drawn up by the Journal of 79 male athletes. Candidates had to be active in their sport and among the all-time best.

I'm glad to see that they put a hockey player in that list. Is Sidney Crosby the right choice, though? I don't know, that's why I ask. Is Ovechkin a better athlete?
One of the attributes that should be given to hockey players is balance. I remember a number of years ago, the News & Observer wrote an article on the Hurricanes players' workouts and one of them was to stand on a big rubber ball while lifting weights. Or something akin to that type of craziness, just to improve their balance.
That reminds me of Jagr in his prime in the mid-'90s. Nobody could knock him off the puck. It was nigh impossible. Also, Mario Lemieux. His skating was so fluid, so graceful that it was deceiving. He would have the puck in his own end and seemingly lumber up the ice, but in a blink of an eye he would be right in front of the opposing goalie, scoring a goal.

Five. Are you counting Sidney Crosby as an American?
Red Wings' boozy confession: We jacked up the Stanley Cup. And no, the dent wasn't "slight."

It seems there's always a "oops, I dropped the Cub and put a crack/dent in it" story. When the 'Canes won the Cup two years ago, Wally (the equipment guy) dropped it and cracked it.

As the Apple turns... Willie Randolph is out as manager of the New York Mets, fired in the middle of the night 2 1/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September. In the middle of the night? Seems pretty cold.

What a great guy. A little too great maybe. Has anyone ever seen him and Greg Maddux together in the same room?
Speaking of retiring to the great office job in the sky, Glen Wesley, aka "Big Red", called it a career yesterday afternoon. Of course, he's got a job in the front office. He'll be in charge of defenseman development. I think, though, that a team needs to have defensemen before you can develop them. And his jersey number (2) will be retired in a ceremony next season.

What I really liked about Jagr is that when his team was down by a goal or two late in the game, he wanted to be on the ice every single shift. Even during regular season games, he was out there trying to get his team back in the hunt for a point or two.
Also, you could not knock that effer off the puck. Oh how the other team tried, he was just too strong and quick for them to disrupt his game.
