Can we get on with it, please???: This shit needs the banhammer applied, post haste.

...and sorry for the double, I got an error.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 06:57 PM on May 17, 2005

Error credited to LBB at shortstop, and BlueKarma advances to second base for a double. That was supposed to be a clever play on words, but I don't think it worked. A Baseball Play on Words! Ha! Sorry. I agree that this guy is a total douche, though. Not sure you can ban him for being ignorant and incendiary, though. He's just voicing his own retarded opinion. Things had calmed down for a while, but I would imagine the Pantheon might have new things planned for the new Spofi update. Hopefully we'll see a new "trial period" or something when changes are made. Hope so, anyway.

You people are too fast to ban others... He is hardly calling out for a banning. Can we get on with it and ease off?

posted by StarFucker at 07:39 PM on May 17, 2005

What would call out for a banning, StarFucker? Organizing a real live cross-burning on some Christ-killer's lawn?

posted by lil_brown_bat at 07:41 PM on May 17, 2005

I bet that would do it.

posted by wfrazerjr at 07:46 PM on May 17, 2005

If we started banning for inflammatory assholeishness, you'd have gone a long time ago, lbb. Just ignore him - he has just as much of a right to his opinions as you do.

posted by dusted at 08:22 PM on May 17, 2005

Whatever, dusted. You've got the right to your opinion of what constitutes "inflammatory assholeishness", but somehow I don't think I ever went anywhere close to the level of suggesting that two thousand years of antisemitism was a just punishment for not accepting Christ as one's personal savior. You're right, let the Jews of SpoFi suck it up.

T-minus 3... 2... 1... Yay! We've reached Metafilter! Let's all punch ourselves in the privates! "One small step for Man, and man do my balls hurt."

posted by Samsonov14 at 09:21 PM on May 17, 2005

Assholiness is next to assgodliness. (Hm. That doesn't work neither.) Anyway. It's one thing to be an asshole. It's quite another to talk racism and anti-semitism. I'm not for banning anyone unless they piss on the parade to the point where it crowds out the actual discussion. Not sure where the line is, but he's awful close to it.

posted by chicobangs at 09:49 PM on May 17, 2005

I'm all for banning idiots that talk in all caps or say GO RED SOX over and over... Or even personal attacks... But lil_bat is suggesting we start censoring...which is fucking ridiculous.

posted by StarFucker at 10:22 PM on May 17, 2005

I am just curious as to what one has to do or how long a person has to be a "member" before they are considered one of the "chosen" normal people As a "Newbe" I would like to know whats expected. After reading these "banhammer" threads I dont feel really comfortable. I just want to know where this "line" is so that I dont cross it! I really like the discussions and the links here and I really dont want to have to leave......

posted by daddisamm at 10:46 PM on May 17, 2005

You seem pretty normal so far, daddisam... But don't say anything bad about jews or lil_bat will suggest we crucify you!

posted by StarFucker at 10:56 PM on May 17, 2005

But don't say anything bad about jews or lil_bat will suggest we crucify you! And make sure you don't say anything positive about female athletes, or SF will spit-the-bit in disgust.

I am surprised Godwin's Law hasn't yet been invoked (referred to, yes, but not thread-killing), given the general nature of threads this week.

grum, that is wrong and you know it...

grum, that is wrong and you know it... And here we learn that sauce for the goose is, in fact, not sauce for the gander. The gander doesn't like it, and we can't have that. I'll admit to being slightly in the wrong in that I didn't scrutinize every comment that bluekarma has made so far (it hasn't posted any links) before starting this; however, before you cry "censorship!" (oh...wait...you already did...well, ice and rest for those jerking-knee tendons), I looked at many and what I perceived was not a pattern of having unsavory opinions, but a pattern of provoking. The "Maybe God is not happy with the Jews" thing seemed so very over the top that I thought I was seeing a pure attempt to disrupt using the most insanely provocative thing that it could come up with in that context. It seemed not merely a noxious opinion but, as chicobangs put it, an attempt to "piss on the parade to the point where it crowds out the actual discussion". The subsequent remark, "Jews are still reaping 'karma' for their rejection of the Messiah" makes me wonder if this is, in fact, a sincerely-held antisocial belief. Also, bluekarma has posted some actual sports-related comments, rather than pure shit-stirring (although I include "Soccer isn't a sport" among the latter, not the former). However, at the time I scanned through blue's comments and thought, "Hmmm...pattern here?" I think it's worth discussing -- and it would be nice if that discussion could happen in a somewhat respectful manner, and without jerking the "censorship!" knee -- just how much "pissing" should be allowed. Obviously I'll abide by the consensus, and if it's a level that I don't like, I'll either bite my tongue, piss back, or go elsewhere. Get yer hip-waders...

All I know is that when the troll wins it makes the baby Jesus cry. Clearly from the comment history there's more than just jew-bashing, soccer-hating troll there though. Anyone ever has any success drawing that "line" between what is and isn't acceptable let me know, and I'll do you a little dance.

We really are metatalk now aren't we? No. We don't subject individuals to a public shaming over etiquette issues. As it says atop the Locker Room, if you have a complaint about a member's conduct, contact the admins via e-mail. As for this guy, linking to his profile shows that all but a few of his recent comments are sports-related and not inflammatory.

And make sure you don't say anything positive about female athletes, or SF will spit-the-bit in disgust. grum, that is wrong and you know it... You are correct. I made a mistake. I should have said: "And make sure you don't say anything positive about female sports, or SF will spit-the-bit in disgust." You've made many derisive/sarcastic comments in numerous threads about the WNBA, WUSA and (I believe) tennis. My favourite is the general blanket statement made in this one. Certain female athletes, however, you have no problem with.

posted by grum@work at 11:21 AM on May 18, 2005

Here's how we're handling this situation. I don't think we can close discussions completely with the present software, as Matt does on MetaFilter, or I would in a couple recent threads.
