I'm planning on getting SportsFilter TextAds at some other sites. Wanna suggest a snappy tagline?

Oh, don't get us started. It's time to do a search on "SpoFi:" Of course, that's just the SpoFi posts. Somebody will need to scour the Locker Room archives for what I expect to be a much-richer vein of the the zingers.

Some goodies I pulled from the top 5 of the 28 search results ... SpoFi: where -ifying a thread is welcome. SpoFi: A little something something for the ladies. SpoFi: Read what you want, don't read what you don't want, but don't shit on other peoples threads. SpoFi: how 'bout you post more stuff about whatever interests you? SpoFi: Don't bitch about what everyone else is doing unless you're contributing to your own cause. SpoFi: Put up or shut up. SpoFi: Kicking greedy, arrogant sports agents in the fricking balls. SpoFi: We editorialize for your pleasure SpoFi: Fuck Bud!

This one is still my favorite... sad, stupid, poignant, but totally utterly in-the-moment emotional. me, clad in my johnny damon t-shirt, trying to make sense of my life. plus, in retrospect now, really funny as all hell.

Thanks for all the suggestions; I went with these two on DayPop (pending their approval):

  • Inteligent sport's diskourse
  • We like to watch people play with their balls.
I've run this on DayPop twice: Community weblog. All sports. All the time. The first time got a staggering 0.980% click-through rate; the second time, with twice as many impressions, got a disappointing 0.055%.

But wait a minute, this is just going to bring more people here. The problem is we need more money, not more people. What gives?

posted by worldcup2002 at 01:10 AM on May 07, 2004

i believe we get money on the click-throughs.

posted by goddam at 01:20 AM on May 07, 2004

Wait, we're advertising for ourselves and getting money for each click-through? How does that work?

So instead of posing problems, let's give some solutions... You'd prefer to pay yourself instead of doing the text-ads and invite more members?

So when do I get my check? Seriously thought, is it posted on the site anywhere where we can send our donations, tithes, whatever?

posted by wfrazerjr at 09:17 AM on May 07, 2004

j-girl: I'm referring to the database issue we had earlier in the week. We don't solve that by having more people, but by having more money to buy more space. I think that's a bigger issue right now than increasing membership. Once we have that fixed, we can get more people. Otherwise, an influx of new people is going to bring up that problem again. And how's that going to help get more people when their first experience is "ERROR: Could not allocate more space ..."? And, yes, it seems strange to me that an advertiser would make money directly from someone clicking the ad that was placed on someone else's site. (kirk can clarify this for me.)

i know nothing about the costs and parameters involved with hosting, but won't having ad revenue translate to allowing for more traffic, which is the idea of advertising? two birds, one stone?

posted by garfield at 10:23 AM on May 07, 2004

The part that confuses me, as JugWine already pointed out, is how are we making money from placing ads on other people's sites? Normally, when X places ads on Y's site, if someone clicks on the ads on Y's site, the money goes to google (or whoever owns the ad distribution network) and Y. X _pays_ for every click on the ad. X never makes money directly off the clickthrough. X makes money from whatever happens after the clickthrough (a sale, registration, etc.). We're X. Unless somehow, we're also the owner of the distribution network, how do we make money off the ad?

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:31 AM on May 07, 2004

I think you all are mixing up two different kinds of textads. The ones we would host here would bring in money. The ones kirk is talking about we'd have to pay for to bring in new traffic. Apparently he had done one before that got a lousy click-through rate compared to the money spent. I imagine we'll be looking at doing both in the near future.

I see what you're saying.

posted by garfield at 10:53 AM on May 07, 2004

Ufez Jones is right; the TextAds I placed are on DayPop and we don't make money from them. Results so far: Inteligent sport's diskourse: 0.293% click-through rate (1 click/341 views) We like to watch people play with their balls; 0.599% CTR (2 clicks/334 views)
