Sports Bio

May 28, 2000: Roger vs Pedro at the Stadium. I don't think I'll ever be lucky enough to see a more exciting game than that one. It was one of those rare losses where you don't feel cheated out of the price of a ticket -- you know you've just witnessed something special.

I was also at the game two days earlier where some jackass jumped (or fell) out of the top tier seating and landed on the netting. We all thought he was dead or he broke his neck or something, untill he sat up three minutes later and started making an ass out of himself. The funny thing is that he left his wallet out there. Serves him right, if you ask me.

Other memorable moments: Sitting directly behind home plate at Pac Bell Park, the Giants vs the Padres. The game was not particularly memorable, but apparently my girlfriend (now my wife) and I provided enough entertainment to the viewing audience by making out the entire time.

And then there were five.: The IOC has whittled the list of possible host cities for the 2012 games down to New York, Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow leaving only broken hearts in Istanbul, Leipzig and the other candidates. The final decision will be made next year.

Patriots' Linebacker Tedy Bruschi Retires

I've seen Belichick win three superbowls, but this is the first time I remember seeing him all choked up!

Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice make this year's MLB Hall of Fame

I can better understand the 5.2% who left Henderson off the ballot than the one writer who decided to spend one of his votes on Jesse Orosco.

Eight.

There's already the swim-bike-run of the triathlon. Women's is over, but Men's is tomorrow, I think.

Beeping ball helps blind play baseball.

This is actually quite amazing to witness. We have a large blind population in our town and I saw our local team running drills in advance of this game while we were walking through the park near our house.

It's OK for the NFL to get you drunk, but not Charles Woodson

Let me see if I've got the NFL's thinking on this straight:

  • Charles Woodson gets a DUI coming home from his own charity golf tournament. No Big Deal
  • Charles Woodson arrested for public intoxication. No problem
  • Charles Woodson promoting his own label of wine. Very big problem, children might be watching!
Is that about right?

All too perfect

"no one" will talk about the 2007 Patriots in 10 years if they lose this Superbowl, "no one" here meaning about 10% of the people that would talk about the 2k7 Pats if they win the Superbowl. I agree. Fair or not, if the Pats lose, they become just the answer to a trivia question. If they win, then they'll considered one of the greatest teams (if not the greatest) of all time. No pressure, though.

Politically correct baseball -

Yes it's very amusing and relevant. If you're living in 1994.

It's like Brad and Jen all over again...

That's funny. SI just named her one of the 20 People to watch in baseball this year. Apparently she fancies herself a media personality.

Japan wins World Baseball Classic

Actually, the Cuban players would be silly to defect directly to America. If they do that, then they're subject to the draft (unless things have changed). In the past, they've defected to places like the Dominican Republic so that they can enter the majors as free agents instead and can name their price.

Vinatieri Signs with the Colts

Dang, I'm going to miss Vinatieri. That snow bowl game is burnt into my memory as one of the top football moments that I've wintessed (albeit on TV). I wonder, though, if Adam will get all those endorsement deals down there in Tennessee.

Leiter calls it quits

I never realized how different Leiter's record would have been if Benitez wasn't such a mess in big games. Anyway, I'm sure people will disagree, but I thought Leiter was pretty good in the broadcast booth when he did playoff games on Fox. He always seemed excited to be there and to drop little tidbits that the others (I can't even remember who they stuck him with) weren't privy to.

Mo's Guide to Baseball

Thanks for posting this -- Mo has been one of my favorites since he was setting up for Wetteland. I knew that his steely on-mound demeanor was the opposite of his off-field personality, but I didn't know he was such a mentor to the younger players.
