Sports Bio

Who the Heck is Trox?

I've lived in Atlanta for 13 years. Like long walks on the beach, and am a people person. Well at least the part about Atlanta is true. I work as a web content strategist, mostly as a consultant, so I guess the Internet is really my line of work. I'm passionate about football (soccer) and baseball when it comes to sports. Like everyone else, I have a blog but that's mostly been on hiatus lately due to an extreme backlog at work.

As for my nickname, it's a corruption and shortening of my last name that I picked up as a nickname in college.

SportsFilter History
I joined spofi on February 12, 2002, after following a link here from Metafilter. What really got me going here was the hubbub of activity surrounding the 2002 World Cup. Now Spofi has become an integral part of my day, even if I don't have the time to post or respond to posts as much as I'd like. I do appreciate the perspective of other members a lot though.

Spofi Honors
Winner: 2007 - 2008 Fantasy UEFA Champion's League
Winner: 2006 College Football Pick 'Em
3rd Place: 2006 Tournament Pick 'Em

Memorable Sporting Events

The most memorable sporting events I've attended would have to start with my first baseball game (Baltimore vs. Boston)--talk about sealing a lifelong addiction. Probably the most memorable game I've ever attended though has to be game 6 of the 1995 World Series. Not only did the Braves finally bring one home, but it was just a heck of a game. Finally, even though I didn't attend it in person, I have to mention the US defeat of Portugal in the 2002 world cup. I spent two hour wondering if I was still asleep, and it took many phone calls with friends to convince me that what I was witnessing was really happening.

My Teams:

There's really not much consistency here. Since I grew up outside of a major market, most of the teams I pull for have very little relation to where I grew up (western Virginia). I follow the following sports in roughly the following order (though the Red Sox and Arsenal are pretty close in my mind).

Baseball: I've also been a Boston Red Sox fan since I was old enough to pick up a baseball bat (and still mostly live and die by them each year), but I began following the Atlanta Braves when Dale Murphy was winning MVPs, and since I live in Atlanta, I see them live far more often than the Red Sox.

Football (Association): When it comes to football, my true love would be that other football. Thanks to a trip to Highbury as my love of the sport was growing, I support Arsenal in the EPL. If I had to pick, DC United would be my favorite MLS team, along with St. Pauli in Germany as a third choice. To support a team, I need to have visited it.

Basketball : UNC Tar Heels (since Phil Ford and company). I don't really have an NBA team. I suppose I'd pull for the Hawks, but they are the second best basketball team in Atlanta, behind Georgia Tech.

Football (Gridiron): I remain more loyal to my boyhood home when it comes to American Football. I pull for Virginia Tech and the Washington Redskins. (I must admit that I've recently began to hop on the Falcons bandwagon since I now live in Atlanta, but they rarely impact the Redskins.)

Hockey: I'm rather new to Hockey, but the passion of the fans on Spofi have inspired me to begin paying more attention. Go Thrashers!

Chelsea banned from making new signings: Until 2011. That's two transfer windows. As they're one of the older teams in the Premier League, what impact will this have on their position this season and next?

The journey of Delino DeShields: "This is how it happens. You play 10, 12, 13 years in the big leagues, cash in a couple of big contracts at the end. "Retire" by the simple act of not answering your phone for an entire offseason, your career numbers a statement for all eternity as to who you were. You lay low, help raise those kids, get the oldest ready to fly the nest. Get divorced -- ouch -- and watch the economy go down the toilet -- double ouch. Start thinking that, well, if you were ever going to get back in the game, this might not be a bad time."

Multipost is most likely a sponsor of the team. I believe some teams in the Dutch league place a second sponsor where we'd expect to see a name.

Adebayor Taunts Arsenal Fans, Nearly Sparks Riot

Oh, I do think Eduardo make a meal of that, but why should he be the first diver banned.

Adebayor Taunts Arsenal Fans, Nearly Sparks Riot

The FA, unlike UEFA in the Eduardo case, actually have a history of dishing out bans for violent conduct and the like. The Eduardo ban (thankfully overturned) had no real precedent, and UEFA had indicated that there was no intention of really following through on future dives.

Q: How did your club fare?

I feel Arsenal are stronger than they were at the beginning of last season. They added Arshavin in January and Vermaelen in the summer. That sounds like relatively few transfers, but with the readdition of Senderos to push Silvestre further down the depth chart, the emergence of Song in the d-mid role toward the end of last season, and the return of Rosicky and Eduardo from injuries, I have to saw I'm a lot more confident than I was at this time last year (but of course, Fulham had already defeated Arsenal by then too).

Chelsea banned from making new signings

From what I understand, it means they cannot register new players, which would rule out signings and transfers. But I could be wrong.

Chelsea banned from making new signings

Here's something else that just occurred to me. Will they have enough first team players to cover for Essien, Drogba, and Mikel when they leave for the African Cup of Nations in January. If they have any injuries, they could start to struggle.

Chelsea banned from making new signings

I think Chelsea's youth system and reserves have been a bit depleted over the last few years (the signing that got them in trouble aside). So I'm also interested in how they will manage to cope with injuries, even though their squad is arguably the deepest of the "big 4".

Chris Brown: How Blogs Killed (and Saved) Sports Writing

Exhibit A in support: Rob Neyer. I'd link to him, but the worldwide leader has put him behind the paywall (curse you ESPN!). Even his articles, per se, seem like blog posts, and he's certainly expanded the usual ground covered by baseball writers (among others).

EPL Fantasy League Starting Up Soon

Ives picked Arsenal to finish 7th. What alternate universe is he living in. It's definitely possible that one of the top 4 could drop out of those spots, but two of them? And one as far as 7th. (I wonder how he feels about that after the Gunners put six past Everton).
