I was born in Toronto, raised in Ohio, and attend college in Hillsdale (where I still am). Thus, I play hockey, I love hockey, and I wanted to be in the NHL my whole life. At least until Gary Bettmann shat all over the league with the glo-puck. Also, because of my childhood in Ohio, I have experience with baseball, basketball, soccer, football in the yard, roller hockey, tennis, golf (which I just suck at), downhill skiing, shootin' guns (tho I've never shot an animal), fishing, hiking, bicycling, and skateboarding (but just for a few weeks). Since college I have picked up racquetball and some martial arts, and I've revived my love of basketball just shooting around with friends at home and at school. I also helped re-start the long dead hockey club at Hillsdale College, which has been great fun - we finally won a game.

Being one of the original members of SpoFi, and one of its most inactive, I would just like to say that you should all join me for a drink if'n you happen to be in town.

Watching the Leafs lose to Gretzky (the Kings came along ot watch the game, as I recall) in '93 was .... difficult.

Weird Technical Issue Something is wrong with my ISP. When I try to connect via my ATT Yahoo DSL, I get an error message. This is unique to at least this computer, perhaps it's my ISP I don't know. But I can access Spofi fine through a proxy, or through a computer on a different ISP - as long as I don't use Firefox. Firefox on Windows plus proxy works. Firefox on Windows w/o proxy does not, same results were found w/ Firefox on a Mac at work, with a different ISP (Cincinnati Bell). WTF? Error message inside.

Ben Roethlisberger blogs the Super Bowl! Blogging quarterbacks is definitely a movement I support. Yeah. Blog previously mentioned here, but this is some fresh content, and deserves a mention.

Carson Palmer blogs his recovery "In terms of my injury, I will be completely ready for the 2006 NFL season and am anxious to get back out on the field with my teammates." He also talks about some details of the recovery process, urges the front office to resign John Kitna, and and avoids mention of how the injury happened. Though this blog is probably vetted by PR people, Palmer doesn't sound bitter, he sounds like a class act.

NBA brawl in the stands repeated Or something else? New York Knick Antonio Davis ran into the stands during a game in Chicago, claiming his wife's safety was being threatened. Larry Brown supported him, immediately drawing a distinction between what happened last night and what happened that fateful day last year at the Palace, saying "That thing that happened in the stands had nothing to do with the two teams. That's a man concerned about his family." Regardless, this incident underscores the weak, often ineffective security at sports venues around the country.

Stephon Marbury Leaves Knicks, Threatens to [Euphemism] Isiah Thomas The New York Knicks are imploding earlier than usual this season, with guard Stephon Marbury leaving the team after a verbal (and possibly physical) blowup with Coach Isiah Thomas that seems likely to send one or both packing. The New York Daily News quotes a threat Marbury allegedly made on the team plane, bowdlerized for your protection. "Isiah has to start me," Marbury said. "I've got so much [doody] on Isiah and he knows it. He thinks he can [snu-snu] me. But I'll [snu-snu] him first. You have no idea what I know."

I have to automatically side with Stephon, as I have to give him credit for the Starbury shoe, and the fact that Isiah Thomas is quite obviously a massive douche.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves Wisconsin youth football coach threatens to kill one of his own players, then administers a helicopter slam, just to drive the message home. You know, maybe we should sign the kids up for the Debate Club instead.

It is possible that the 12 year old who got bodyslammed is a punk who really did take a cheap shot at this other kid, and deserved to be corrected in a reasonable fashion, i.e. verbal correction and perhaps being made to run some laps. The problem with youth sports is the adults.

Steve Nash Wants to Buy Spurs No, not those Spurs -- Tottenham Hotspur in the Premiership. "I'd like to be an owner," he told the New York Times. "It's something I could do for the rest of my life after my little window of popularity dies." Nash, who played soccer in Canada as a youth and has a brother with Football Association experience, is a lifelong fan of the team like his London-born father.

As a Tottenham supporter, I really would like to see Nash pull this off - after he's won an NBA chamionship.

User registration with a valid email address can be a pretty high barrier to entry. I like Joel Sposky's take on the whole thing, but I think the barrier to entry is good. However, perhaps a script should be used where new users who post in ALLCAPS are IP-banned automatically, or given an intelligence test that requires knowledge of the shift key.

Chief Wahoo: A Modest Proposal.

posted by Joey Michaels at 04:59 PM on October 20

There is no defense of Chief Wahoo. At best he should be an object lesson about the institutionalized, casual racism that still exists today. I think the best answer is to rename them the Cleveland Tribe, and change their mascot to be in honor and remembrance of the area tribes that got so royally fucked when their land was taken. They could do a mascot in honor of Tecumseh, for example. It has to happen, now is the time.

This is why the best thing slashdot has ever done is to automatically name all users who post anonymously a so-called 'Anonymous Coward.' Corollary: John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. Sometimes, in spite of my libertarian instinct for privacy and freedom of speech, I wonder if it would be such a bad thing to require people online to post using their real names. It would put a stop to a lot of the pointless dickwaving and internet tough guy oneupmanship that destroys so many 'discussions' online.

robi8259: did you actually read the article? Is blah blah blah your summary of the article or simply your reaction to the way I worded the post? I thought the article made some good explanations of how the mechanics of the swing could be aided by a physical guide. What would really help would be side by side evidence carefully detailing the evolution of his swing, especially up to the point in 2001 where he got the final iteration of the armor and really started his record breaking pace.

Legendary coach and general manager Scotty Bowman is strongly considering joining the Maple Leafs in an advisory role. The question is as a mentor to GM John Ferguson Jr. and Head Coach Paul Maurice or does this portend a major shake-up in the Leafs organization?

posted by skydivedad at 09:43 AM on August 05

Well, that explains why the Leafs are so mediocre - they're owned by a teacher's union.

Will the Web Kill the Local Sports Page? In a discussion about the future of newspapers, A-list blogger Matthew Yglesias argues that the sports section is being killed off by sites like ESPN.Com and Yahoo Sports. "Sports specialty sites will have the best sports coverage," he writes.

The Dayton Daily News refuses to cover the National Hockey League in any meaningful way. They have at least two beat reporters just covering the Cincinnati Reds. About ten years ago I wrote one of the sports reporters about why they didn't cover hockey more, and he said 'there's not enough interest' and that turned me off to local sports news. I only read it to follow the local college sports teams, nothing more. Our sports page is basically mutating into a local sports digest with opinions and stuff on outdoors activities. They print national stories as a matter of course, but who cares?
