Hey -: Noticed your profile on Sportsfilter and thought you would be interested in a new sports community . . . I'm curious how many other profiles this spammer fellow has "noticed". Anyone else got email from Aaron Wright about the "Ultimate Sports Community" he and his bussies put together?

I didn't get one. Fuck that dude for pre-emptively rejecting me from his crap website and sparing me spam! You know what? I'm in Bullpen Pro's profile. I'm still someone to somebody!

posted by jerseygirl at 08:33 AM on March 28, 2006

I'm special too. This sucks. Especially since his ultimate sports community was featured on the front page not so long ago. I figure that should have been enough for him.

Interesting, qbert. I wonder if the referral logs brought him here? I didn't want to check out the site based on the email, but at least now I know it's spam from a decent site.

Strange...I got a solicitation to check out some NCAA blog based on my SpoFi membership, but didn't get this one. I feel slighted. I'm still someone to somebody! Amen, sister!

posted by jerseygirl at 09:56 AM on March 28, 2006

I got one too. What does that say about me? Why was I sent one? Am I on some kind of "suspicious persons" list? We are not all going to die now or anything are we? We have all been "noticed," that can't be good can it? I had better not be on some kind of double-secret-probation list? Or worse yet, someone's dead pool... Besides, what kind of sick fucker goes around "noticing" peoples profiles, huh?

posted by chris2sy at 10:16 AM on March 28, 2006

My guess would be that everyone has been "noticed" by a an email-sucking web spider, and that some of us' spam filters work better than others'.

I got one. (I have gmail too. interesting.) It doesn't seem like a malevolent thing, but still, I don't respond well to spamming. Has anyone gone back there periodically to check it out, or was this weekend the second time giving the place the once-over for anyone else too?

posted by chicobangs at 11:59 AM on March 28, 2006

I don't use Gmail! I mean, I don't use Gmail. qbert got me a little excited there. I had not been back to the site since the FPP.

posted by Amateur at 12:03 PM on March 28, 2006

I also think it's not malevolent. For me it depends on the process: where we really "noticed" by a benevolent onlooker, or grabbed by a bot and mass-mailed? I recall not so long ago receiving an unsolicited email entitled "The SportsFilter Cometh" saying:

we would like to extend a special invitation to MeFi members who have actively participated in Sports discussions in the past. We want you to go to the site and be our proto-members
If I had cried "Spam!" I would not today be the proud owner of a really low user number in this here community.

Noticed your profile on Sportsfilter and thought you would be interested in a new sports community . . . You know, that actually sounds kind of familar. For shits and giggles I clicked on my AIM screen name in my profile and this is the IM it automatically sent: "Hi I know you're busy but I saw your name on SportsFilter and ..." Are you sure it is spam and not an automatically generated invitation from someone clicking on one of those "tell a friend about us" kind of links? I'm not sure if that sight has one of those, I searched briefly, but didn't find one.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 03:02 PM on March 28, 2006

I missed out on the invite, but then I don't put my email up on the profile. For good reason it seems. Not naming names, but I gave my email to another SpoFi member a few months ago, and then immediately started receiving spam, which I hadn't got before. Coincidence? Maybe.

Don' t you all see whats going on here?! They're trying to cash in on SpoFi's growth by pillaging us for our users. Boo!! I say Boo, in your general direction sir!! Clearly the Gauntlet has been thrown. We must crush them with wave after wave of dyslexic new users till they beg for mercy. We will set them running to their ISPs begging for the server to be shut off! The internets will run red with the blood of wiki-posting clods with no regard for punctuation or grammar!! Remember they can take our newbies, but they will never take our FPP's!! I have gmail, and didn't receive an invite either. Regardless, their site still blows. And Shame on Herman Miller.

It's spam. Aaron/Armchair may be well-intentioned, but mass-emailing all the users in a community is bullshit. I vote to make email addresses visible only when you're logged in, and instantly ban anyone that does something like this. What he's doing is worse than a self-link.

Like JJ, I generally delete bulk messages with barely a glance, so I may or may not have received an invite. Unconfirmable. In a related story, I have been receiving some spam in which the "From" address is the actual e-mail address of registered SpoFi users. The messages generally conveyed are "Will you please shut the hell up" or "Stay away from SportsFilter, you scumbag." Anyone else getting these?
