College Football Rankings - Week 1: Are you ready for some college football? The polls are out. I'm very surprised that Oklahoma is still #5 after having their quarterback tossed for the season.

This poll was before last wednesday, before Bomar was out....I think Texas might be a little overranked and Penn state underranked along with Nebraska

Notre Dame is the clear #1 team, they returned 16 starters from a VERY good team last season. With Charlie Weiss at the helm they will only get better. Ohio State in my opnion is not #1 and Texas should not be #2 just because they won the Rose Bowl. Remember they lost Vince Young, the guy that won that game and most of the rest for Texas last year. Mark my words Notre Dame is #1 and will be after they win the National Championship this season. I don't even think the BCS can mess this one up.

Deja vu...I know these are fresh rankings but they still haven't played any games. Being from New England (hardly a bastion of college football excitement) I tend to follow the teams coached by ex-Patriots coaches, so here's my two cents. Notre Dame's offense is only going to get scarier going forward, while I fear USC is headed downwards after they failed to beat Texas with last year's all-star team.

posted by Venicemenace at 05:41 PM on August 07, 2006

Ok then so with the 16 starters returning on both sides of the ball their D was par at best and ohio state lost their D (which was awsome!)and are returning the same starters on offence from last year which beat N D granted its a new year a Weiss seems to be a good collage coach it would come down to a offensive shoot out and my money would be on OSU everytime

posted by buck(I)fan640 at 05:43 PM on August 07, 2006

I don't understand how Texas and USC are 2 & 3. They both lost their best players who lead their team. Who's Texas without Vince Young, and who's USC without Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart? Notre Dame should be #1 and Ohio State #2.

posted by a24kurtz02 at 05:44 PM on August 07, 2006

Notre Dame is over ranked as usual, as are USC and Texas (esp Texas). I think Oklahoma is ranked about right because Stoops's system is better then any one player and besides I still think Paul Thompson is as good or better QB then Bomar. My beloved Michigan is ranked a bit high I'm afraid and Nebraska is under ranked big time! What really surprises me is UCLA is not ranked in the top 25 at all! I think they're going to shock a lot of people this year.

For those who think Notre Dame is a #1 team , Please rethink your opion, and ask yourself who does Notre Dame play this year. They have a easy schedule , they only play 3 repeat 3 top 25 teams!!!!! Florida plays 6 repeat 6 top 25 teams , 3 of which are on the road!!!!! Now taking into consideration schedule strength ,Who should be # 1 ???? Ans- Florida , enough said.......

The Season will play out and Ohio State and Notre Dame should be playing for the title.

ND will be really good, but like I said in a previous post--that schedule is a killer. Has to be in the top 5 for 'tuff' schedules. What about the other top 10 teams?? what are their schedules like??

Don't worry too much about the Week One rankings. Number 1 & 2 face off September 9, so someone will sink a bit.

I'm a USC fan & I don't give a hoot about early polls. It's all about what's happening in Nov. That's when everything shakes out, including the pretenders with SOFT schedules.

ND has a tough schedule but also plays some weak sisters by playing the the acadamies TY also. OSU will face stiff challenges early with Texas & PSU but they should prevail. Tressel's boys deserves the ranking were as Miami & FSU are over rated. Watch out for Urban's Gators.

I think that the Big Ten has alot to prove this year. Although Jim Tressel's record against the Big Blue is 4-1, I believe this year Michigan will surprise everyone.

I'm not saying ND is going to win the national championship this season - OSU looks truly scary...although I found them maddingly inconsistent last year, especially the Penn State game. I only mean that Charlie Weis' offenses are going to get better and better every year going forward. If he stays in South Bend, he is going to bring that team back to serious heights. And buckifan, the Pac-10 may not be the toughest conference, but last time I checked that was not a prerequisite for winning a national championship. They may not be the meanest but all they do is play entertaining football. Don't hate.

I dont hate. every confrence has their marqee teams pac-10 big-10 big-12 etc. My point is the drastic differance in coaching styles and what is expected from locations. point being Big-10 is consider a smashmouth 3 yards and a cloud of dust. SEC is speed speed speed. Pac- 10 is west coast offenses. big-12 is a combanation of big-10/pac-10.So week in week out teams are subjected to different "beatings" in areas were other teams are not. So soft schedule or not each team in each conference takes abuse I just think the big-10 week in week out has more abuse. And as far as a prerequisite for a national title when you start number 1 and play a SOFT schedule and dont lose......we know what happens

The top 5 teams anyone of them could be pre-ranked number #1.(Not USC- lost waaaayyy 2 much) I mean in all reality, players leave and some new ones come in...plus the media is basically a bunch of retards anyways. How many times have you said to yourself, I knew better than them. Like Penn St.'s heinous ranking, Im a big Michigan fan, but does the loss of a QB who couldnt throw,(Robinson)really make a team that was 10-1 worse than a team(Michigan) that had the worst season since the 80's last year? And TCU? play someone first, your conference is definitely that - MID I could go on and on...I guess thats the fun part of not having a playoff, everyone can say...What if we could play them or what if we could rematch them etc....

Notre Dame #1? Are you kidding me? A candy ass schedule I'm a University of Texas fan, and even I wouldn't pretend that ND's schedule is candy ass, lets see, Georgia Tech (got votes), #19 Penn State, #15 Michigan, Purdue (got votes), UCLA (got votes), and #3 USC. Feller, I don't know who your school's playin this year, but I bet it ain't much tougher than that. One thing can be said about the Irish, they may have a couple of creampuff rivalries, but they are also gonna play a big game or two each season. Charlie Wiess is the real deal. Hook'em Horns!

posted by mjkredliner at 11:07 PM on August 07, 2006

The SEC has always had the toughest division and the most underranked teams in the NCAA. Just look back a few years ago when Auburn went UNDEFEATED in the SEC. That doesn't happen. And they had to settle for the USC-Oklahoma disaster. This year the SEC is getting their recognition with 6 teams in the top 25. Problem is none of them will go the the National Title Game because they all will loose at least once. So as always the best team will not be in the Championship game. Go Gators!

Why is everybody underestimating Texas?? They are returning a lot of talent also. That team was a lot better than just Vince Young. Top to bottom Notre Dame doesnt have that hard of a schedule. And last year i think they only beat three teams with a winning record and a 7-5 Michigan without Mike Hart for most of the game was one of them. I think OSU can be good but when you lose 9 people on defense its hard to come back. Regardless of how talented they say the young guys are, you cant trade anything for experience. The offense should be solid though. And being from Ohio, i can tell you that Chris Wells is GOOD. And how about West Virginia? Fairly weak schedule with a lot coming back. They have the potential to go undefeated. deez, you mentioned Penn State, i believe they are underrated, but they did lose 4 o-linemen and a tight end on offense and all 4 starting DBs along with 3 d-linemen. Morelli should be solid though.

Here we go again touting the SEC...How many tough non-conference opponents do they play? How many of the six ranked teams that Florida plays are not in the SEC, or in the south? Tennessee, at least, plays California, which will contend for, and could very well win, the Pac-10 title this year. Are there any other SEC teams who are playing a ranked opponent outside of the conference? The SEC teams have a pattern of only playing conference teams or other teams south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Does Florida, Florida State, Alabama, or LSU play, for example, Ohio State, California, Notre Dame or other tough teams outside the region?

posted by quaybon at 12:30 AM on August 08, 2006

Just to clarify, Florida State is in the ACC. The SEC was too scary for Bowden's boys.

Color me biased, but my reaction to Notre Dame's "soft schedule" would be the same as my reaction to someone saying the Yankees have an "average payroll". I don't even need to look anything up to know you're wrong. Having said that, Notre Dame's defense needs to answer some questions before they're anyone's #1 team.

Why is everybody underestimating Texas?? Well, the polls aren't. #2 is a pretty lofty position, and the Sep. 9th game should be #1 vs. #2. I think both teams are unproven commodities, given Texas' loss of VY and Ohio State losing Hawk, Carpenter, et al. There is no lack of very good athletes on either team to fill those holes, and both programs are among the best. Should be a good game.

posted by mjkredliner at 10:40 AM on August 08, 2006

Texas should be 2nd because they are the National Champions, just because they lost Vince Young doesnt mean that they arent champs. ND is good, but OSU kicked their ass in the Fiesta Bowl and will again if they play.

Notre Dame is good- I love their QB, and seem to be the team to beat. But, we all must realize that the games haven't even begun, so lots of things can change. eg: Brett Romar

posted by redsoxrgay at 01:57 PM on August 08, 2006

OK, more on Notre Dame #1 - In order to be #1, you need a defense that can stop your average High School Team. #2 - You had to take your running back and make him a linebacker, whats up with that? #3 - Your best receiver is a better baseball player than a football player. Maybe he should carry a bat. #4 - Isnt it about time for a uniform change #5 - Just give up, it's not gonna happen. #6. - Notre Dame will lose to Michigan, and Michigan sucks. #7 - Do you honestly call games against Army, Air Force, and Navy an actual game. #8 - Charlie Weiss is probably saying "Damn! why did I leave New England" #9 - Rudy is too old to play now #10 - Whats up with the golden dome, that thing needs painted.

Hey lightman. for one who's your team? I see your a typical run of the mill ND FAN HATER. Let me serve you some cheese with all that wine. Some answers to your D.A. comments . Charlie Weiss is a Offense Master. So sit back and enjoy the show. We will have a better defense. Once again like last year, tell your teams they better be scoring more than 25 a game to best us. I'll take any service accademy team over your Ohio, Saint James jr college team your boys play. The Air Force has been in more Bowl game than any of your so called scrimmage teams. Both Michigan Teams are always talented! Are best play plays 2 sports, your right. Once again show the talent level. Are NO#1 Running back is still there. He's Darisus Walker. He's only a Jr. Get used to seeing him in the Zone AGAIN. Taking our 2nd best running back show how versatal we are. The Uniforms and Rudy is called TRADITION, KNOW IT, LEARN IT. Finally, WE NEVER GIVE UP! Thats why WE ARE, NOTRE DAME ! By the way, your team is who? I think you need to just face the facts. WERE BACK.........................

One guy can't even spell Charlie Weis or Darius Walker's name right, the other refers to the "Tampax Bowl," then says, "This is common knowledge. But this is SPORTS, where Beer drinking is expected, belching and farting encouraged, hookers welcomed. Geesh, IF you two even have a girl, she probably makes you tuck your sack back and wont let you pee standing up. Notre Dame is terribly overrated! How can a squad who went 9-3 and suffered a humiliating loss to Ohio State be ranked so highly? Answer: Notre Dame is a media darling, Weis and Quinn have been made out to be the next coming of Carroll and Leinhart, and preseason rankings are always wrong, anyway.
