Lovie Smith becomes the first black head coach ...... to make it to the title game in its 41 years. One of the most maligned 13-3 teams ever romps past the Saints 39-14 in the NFC championship game.

Hawaii QB says no to NFL. After statistically producing one of the finest seasons for a QB in NCAA history, Colt Brennan has withdrawn his application for the NFL draft and elected to return to Hawaii for his senior season.

I figured he wouldnt go yet. The announcers during the Hawaii Bowl said that he wanted to test the waters and see where he would be projected to go. I think he would be much better served staying for another year. He is pretty quick though and extremely accurate, but I think he needs to put on some more muscle before he goes to the league.

Hawaii Bowl Victory. QB Colt Brennan has had an impressive run. From his stats, you would think he will go high in the draft. I'm sure the nay-sayers will point to his obscurity for playing out in the islands and padded stats due to Hawaii's weak Pac-10 schedule.

Comparing Colt to Chang, though, look at the ammount of interceptions Colt threw vs. Changs NCAA record number. Colt is much more accurate. I think he will be staying for one more year anyway. Im not saying he is going to be a great pro, im just saying he is a very talented QB.
Writer: Athletes Should Bounce 'Nigga' From Vocabulary "The N-word has somehow woven itself into the sports culture, particularly basketball, as much as wristbands and crossover dribbles. ... In certain settings, the word is used interracially, with white players calling blacks by the name and vice versa. Players compliment opponents with it. It can be neither age-specific nor an idiom specific to one culture. ... This is where sports is failing a generation." -- John P. Lopez, Houston Chronicle

I live in Youngstown, Ohio where many of the people are black, and many of the black people that I know dont have a problem with their white friends using the term "nigga." I know that I often see younger blacks (I'm 20) using the term in normal conversation with their friends. For me though, I'm Italian, I know that some of my black friends wouldn't care if i used the term, but others would be offended. I think it just depends on how comfortable the people are with each other.
#1 vs #2 Rematch of last years 25-22 thriller won by Texas, but Texas has replaced Vince Young with redshirt freshman Colt McCoy, while Ohio State counters with fifth year senior Troy Smith, who is a good 'un. Should be a barn burner.

College Football Rankings - Week 1 Are you ready for some college football? The polls are out. I'm very surprised that Oklahoma is still #5 after having their quarterback tossed for the season.

Why is everybody underestimating Texas?? They are returning a lot of talent also. That team was a lot better than just Vince Young. Top to bottom Notre Dame doesnt have that hard of a schedule. And last year i think they only beat three teams with a winning record and a 7-5 Michigan without Mike Hart for most of the game was one of them. I think OSU can be good but when you lose 9 people on defense its hard to come back. Regardless of how talented they say the young guys are, you cant trade anything for experience. The offense should be solid though. And being from Ohio, i can tell you that Chris Wells is GOOD. And how about West Virginia? Fairly weak schedule with a lot coming back. They have the potential to go undefeated. deez, you mentioned Penn State, i believe they are underrated, but they did lose 4 o-linemen and a tight end on offense and all 4 starting DBs along with 3 d-linemen. Morelli should be solid though.
USA World Cup ratings rose 65 percent over the 2002 tournament. Of course a lot of that has to do with live coverage rather than crappy tape delays in 2002.

Bryant Gumbel Torches Olympics "Count me among those who don't like them and won't watch them ... Because they're so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. Try not to laugh when someone says these are the world's greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something's not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what's called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they're done, when we can move on to March Madness -- for God's sake, let the games begin."

I didn't see the Ruiz fight but I read that it was very controversial, and that the crowd was even booing the decision. After hearing that I am really wondering how good this guy can possibly be. Ruiz is a bum who should not have even had the title to begin with. And I don't care how big you are, if you struggle with Ruiz you aren't going to be around for very long.
I dont see what the big deal about them being black is. I cant speak for this, but do african-americans feel so opressed that it is a big deal that there are black coaches succeeding? One thing I hate is the fact that people call it stereotyping saying black coaches dont do as well. Figures dont lie and until yesterday, black coaches historically have not done very well.
