Jason Kidd traded to the Mavs. : ESPN reports that discussions are ongoing. But Yahoo is reporting its a done deal. The official word is that the teams agree on the deal "in principle" pending league approval.

Mavs get:

Jason Kidd
Malik Allen

Nets get:

Devin Harris
Jerry Stackhouse
DeSagana Diop
Devean George
Maurice Ager
$3 Million
2 First round picks

Stackhouse is expected to be waived by the Nets in order to resign with the Mavs for the remainder of the season in one months time. In a seperate move the Nets traded Antoine Wright to the Mavs for a Second round pick.

Why the two separate trades, to make it fit? Quite a haul for New Jersey. Between San Antonio, LA, Dallas and Phoenix, I can't tell if the finals winner will definitely come from the West or if they'll burn themselves out. The team that makes it to the Finals will have played an amazingly tough run.

Stupid Warriors should have picked up Kidd instead of Wobbly Webber. Kidd would have been a much better fit.

This is the worst trade in the history of basketball the mav's are idiots to give that much up for Jason Kidd?? Jason has maybe a year or two left and plays no where close to how he did in his prime. Even if Jason was in his PRIME now he would not be worth what the Mav's gave up....good lord I rate this trade there with the Herschall Walker trade only this time the Texas team got the worst end of the deal..

I would not have given even Devin Harris alone for Kidd! Much less this kind of package!

2008: Nets deal Jason Kidd for a young star (Harris), two nice young players (Ager and Diop), draft picks and financial flexibility

2009: Nets deal Vince Carter in a similar deal for 65 cents on the dollar, but get a few young prospects

2010: Nets deal Richard Jefferson at the trading deadline

2010: Nets move to Brooklyn

2010 (summer): Nets sign LeBron James to the Big Apple via free agency; the kids are now veterans; challenge for the title in 1-2 seasons

Could someone clarify the Stackhouse situation for me? It is quite confusing.

Stackhouse was included in this trade to make the numbers work. While it is entirely possible that the Nets do like his skill-set, the incumbent cadre of wingmen (Jefferson, Carter, Nachbar, and now George and Ager) make him expendable. Beyond that, its rather obvious that Stack has enjoyed his time with the Mavs and would prefer to try and get back to the Finals with them than languish on the Nets bench. Under the CBA, if the Nets buy Stack out he can only re-sign with the Mavs 1 month after the buyout (the Gary Payton rule), though he could sign on with any other team ASAP for the remainder of the season. I'm not sure of the cap implications, but I believe this effectively takes Stack off of the Net's cap next season (while still counting towards this season). Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Um, did you miss the box insert that reads:

Jason Kidd, despite being a month away from turning 35, is still producing at a high level. Only two others, Magic Johnson and Oscar Robertson, have met his averages over the course of a season, and they did so in their early- and mid-20s.

Beyond that, take a look at what the Mavs have "really" given up here:

Devin Harris - a tough loss but a necessary one for a HOFer
Jerry Stackhouse - Really just taking a 1 month All Star break, no?
DeSagana Diop - handy role player, but unnecessary when you're already overpaying Dampier
Devean George - bench fodder
Maurice Ager - bench fodder
$3 Million - is this really an issue
2 First round picks - which likely would have been dealt on draft day as it is

So essentially you're getting Kidd and Allen for Harris, Diop, George, Ager, and a couple of lower First rounders. The only stable production you're giving up is from Harris and Diop. I'm pretty sure Kidd and Allen will do more than bridge the gap.

According to ESPN's website, Devean George has an option in his contract to block any trade and is exercising it. Apparently resigning as a free agent with his old team for a one year deal gives him this right.

Jason Kidd may be meeting his career averages, but his turnovers have drastically increased, and as a result his PER has collapsed. Yes, Kidd can still play, but to compare him favorably with his past playing level is laughable.

On the other hand, this really is a trade for Harris and 2 first round picks, which I would take in a heartbeat. Kidd is not happy in NJ, and has got to be causing trouble in the locker room. He should bring clutch play, leadership, and, most importantly, playoff experience to the Mavs.

The Mavs aren't lacking in playoff experience, they are lacking in good playoff experiences and Kidd hasn't done anything their core group hasn't done already.

The Mavs traded for Kidd for the same reason the Suns traded for Shaq, they think they have a better chance to win a title with him than without. If this trade goes through, only time will tell if it'll help them rise to the top of a top heavy West. Of course, a beast from the least could still topple the best of the west. I can't wait for the playoffs.

And, they've still got Juwana man and Eddie Jones coming off the bench, with the near guarantee of Stackhouse coming back...

Chambers & Majerle? Do I sense a Suns fan in the building? Or should Oliver Miller be included as well?

Concerning Kidd to the Mavs, I don't think it really will tip the scales one way or another. To me, it's a matter of Dirk stepping up and finishing games. If he can't do that, it won't make any difference who's running the point. Regardless of who the point guard is, at the end of the game Dallas is going to iso for Dirk.

Nope the trade hasn't happened yet cuz my main man Devean George had a no-trade clause. Way to go Devean a Laker for life. This just makes the Lakers path to the championship that much easier. The Spurs are getting old, they depend too much on Ginobili who is the x-factor. The Suns don't have enough defense and Shaq is old and too slow, tho they will play them tough. The Mavericks are ok and even though I like Dirk, he doesn't have the heart of a champion and the killer instinct yet like Kobe. If the Lakers get to the NBA Finals, the Celtics or Pistons won't seem that daunting of a task after they have gone through the tough and grueling West which is like the AFC of basketball. The Celtics will probably beat them tho, it's been too long for KG and he deserves a title even though I want the Lakers to win. I don't care who win and the playoffs are going to be very exciting.

By the way, if it goes through, I think Dallas is helped immeasurably in the short term, and NJ in the longer term.

Jerry West had nothing to do with it, he is not the Grizzlies GM. Chris Wallace is the Grizzlies GM. The same man who engineered the Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers for Joe Johnson, Randy Brown, Milt Palacio, and 1st round pick (Casey Jacobsen) trade. The same Wallace that signed Travis Knight to a 7 year/$22M contract. The same Wallace that signed Chris Mills to a 6 year/$26.1M contract. The same Wallace that traded Andrew DeClercq and the pick that became Andre Miller for Vitaly Potapenko. Ad infinitum. Why is everyone surprised?

Seriously, the Gasol trade looks bad, but isn't so clear cut. Crittenton looks good, though (like Minnesota) with so much competition it might be tough to judge him. The Grizz have cleared the decks and have the cap space to attract free agents. However, there is the possibility that the owners are looking to run things on the cheap for awhile, if not sell/move the team all together. I don't know if the trade was a Front Office mandate or not, but we can't just judge this trade in a void.
