The Confederations Cup is over for a rather meaningless cup, there was some fantastic football in both the final (Brazil v. Argentina) and the third place game (Germany v. Mexico). If you haven't seen either game yet, the third place game is on Fox Soccer Channel at 8pm et, and the final is on at 11pm et. (More inside - I don't want to spoil it for anyone.)

Champions League draw. This morning, the draw was made for the final 16 teams, and there are some really interesting first-round matchups - Chelsea v Barcelona, Juventus v Real Madrid, AC Milan v Manchester United, Arsenal v Bayern Munich - any one of these could have been the final. Are we destined for a final like last year with two smaller teams, or will some giants make it through to the end?

English football's Division One to be renamed "The Championship", with Division Two and Division Three becoming League One and League Two. Apparently, they're changing the name to change people's perceptions of the league. If it's "The Championship", it's gotta be good, right? Huh? What's next, "The Lordship"? "The Fellowship"?

Tottenham Hotspur Clean House, Dump Coach Juande Ramos Spurs, with just two points after nine matches, have fired coach Juande Ramos, assistant coaches Gus Poyet and Marcos Alvarez, and sporting director Damien Comolli. No Premiership team has started this poorly and avoided relegation in 10 years.

Ring it up! Celtics crush Lakers for 17th title There were legendary Celtics sitting in the stands, with names like Russell, Havlicek, Heinsohn, Maxwell, Ainge, and White, who could all tell stories about the days when they touched the NBA championship trophy, sprayed champagne on each other, and watched Red Auerbach proudly puff on a victory cigar. After a 22-year wait that included the retirement of Larry Bird, lots of lean years, and the death of Auerbach, the Celtics have new legends named Pierce, Allen, and Garnett, who now can tell their stories about touching the trophy, spraying champagne, and wishing Red were here to witness it.

Junior Mint: The enduring popularity (and ubiquity) of the 1989 upper deck Ken Griffey Jr. Card When Griffey hits home run No. 600, don't look for the value of Upper Deck No. 1 to skyrocket. After all, there's likely a card in circulation for every person living in the city centers of Cincinnati and Seattle. That sheer quantity, though, does mean that the lasting image of Ken Griffey Jr. won't be anything he does on the baseball field. It will be a picture of an overjoyed teenager in an airbrushed Mariners hat.

It's probably the most thinking Geideman ever did compiling a checklist, save for the 1992 Upper Deck set when he assigned numbers that ended in 69 to players with porn-star-sounding names. (Dick Schofield at No. 269, Heathcliff Slocumb at No. 569, and Dickie Thon at No. 769.) Awesome. It's too bad Rusty Kuntz wasn't playing in 1992.
WuChess: Where hip-hop meets chess. Like the Wu-Tang Clan? Like Chess? Awwww yeah - this is the site for you. Play live chess with people from all over the world and get your learn on. WuChess.com lets you get knowledge from REAL chess masters online, or train in chambers against the computer to refine your skills. Create your own chess clans to see who can build the highest ranking. Play in tournaments for prizes, or just for the joy of flexin' ya mentals. They also donate part of their revenues to Hip-Hop Chess Federation ("Using chess, music and martial arts to promote unity, strategy and non-violence). Now you can be a Grand Master in rap, chess and kung-fu. This is too cool.

Arsenal's Eduardo Da Silva injured in outrageous tackle, possibly ending his career. A truly horrific injury, broken pieces of bone were sticking out of his sock as he was stretchered of the field. This is the sort of injury that you never truly recover from (See Alex Smith). I hope the FA bans Martin Taylor for life.
