NFL 2006 Pick'Em Playoffs SportsFilter Lounge Thanks Hal for being the "Commish" Here's a lounge for some gametime smack talk. Good Luck with your pics.

Comments

Hal Thanks for all the work your putting in to this, I appreciate your effort. How about some pre-game 1st half pronostications. Tampa + Washington Half-Time Score? Passing Leader QB? Passing Leader Rec? Rushing Leader? Team Turnovers? Total Yards Team? TD Leader? and anything else you care to predict. Here's mine h/score TB 10 Wash 10 Passing QB=Simms Leading Reciever 1/2 and game Santana Moss Rush Leader 1st half= Cadillac TO= Wash TD Leader= Cadillac

Let us take a look at the playoffs, from a wider picture. The AFC will probably be represented by the Pats. If the Pats do not make it to Motown, which I doubt, the alternatives are DEN and da Colts. The NFC has got the Seahawks. If the Seahawks end choking up choking somehow in a historic way, which I do not see happening, the only alterntaive for the NFC comes into play, the Chicago Bears. However, I believe it will be NE vs. SEA in DET. I am not going call a winner now, but the Sehawks have an advantage in these playoffs over the entire field, Super Bowl-wise. They play on FieldTurf and everybody else plays on grass. Ford Field has FieldTurf.

Wow Portis throws halfback pass. Great D Dexter

I hear ya Joe88 but I've got the Colts vs. Da Bears in the Big Dance. Best Offense vs. Best Defense!

OOOhhh Simms get picked on a tipped Ball...

Wash 14pts. off TO in the 1st Qtr. TB can't win without taken care of the ball.

"Good Luck with your pics." Your picks, too. :)

Holy smokes, the Bucs are getting their heinies whipped. Come on, you weak and worthless punks! You're ruining my Pick'em!

finally

finally was for "tampa finally scored". The way they are playing it's probable won't happen again. Let's see I predict 8 sacks for Washington. I know it doesn't count for anything 'cuz they already have 3 and it is halftime.

I suck at this. No more halftime predictions! llb your right on the $. TB bunch of weak assed punks. Shit, now my Bookie is knocking on my door. Wonder if he'll take some of skydivemoms homemade meatball sandwiches and cheese +cherry pie? I gotta go.

He did last time you lost!

I wonder what the halftime show was like?

Wow what a call - 15 yards for your team because you hit the other team upside the head and get the official to call a personal foul on the guy you hit.

Ooh! Bucs are within a touchdown with more than a quarter to play! Come on, Bucs!

Mkay, if the game ended after three, I'd be sitting pretty with my first pick. Of course, that's not going to happen.

Come on bucs is right.

Vinatieri will fake a kick and throw for a touchdown.... Brady will have 200 yrds and 2 touchdowns by the end of the first half. Pats will defeat the Jags 34 - 24

17-10 with 7:00 left 4th qtr. My over pick not looking so hot

From your mouth to God's ear, zippinglou, but we're not done with the first one yet. Come on, Bucs, if you're gonna do it now's the time...

Yea Go Bucs, ooohhhh they gotta punt.....

Interception yahoo! Go Bucs

Yes, INTERCEPTION for tampa!

They'll be showing that ball oozing out in Tampa Bay for a long time if they lose.

2 min warning. I guess it's not only the Bears who don't have an offense going into the playoffs. I can't believe I picked the over.

Yes, game winning INTERCEPTION for Washington!

Well, that's that. TB sucks!!!

TB Sucks and my Pick Em off to a horrible start. Go Pats and the over!

Wow that stinks - well I can only go up from here. Can't get any worse than zero!

FYI, I assume we'll reuse this lounge for the second game today... will have some early results posted soon enough...

Also: my rat bastard friend rob scared me with all his tough talk of the Bucs that I changed my pic literally minutes before kick off from WAS, OVER, 7 to WAS, UNDER, 3. While thankfully I was right to go with the under, I lost a net 1 point since my original 1 TD prediction would have given me 3 points on this game, instead of two. Damn you, rob! Damn you to hell!!!!

The only thing worse than this 1st game was the awful announcing. That Paul guy gives me the creeps...

yea my rat bastard brother (who lives in Tampa) had me all hyped on that Chuckie guy as a playoff coach. Serves me right listening to his sorry ass. This also screwed up my playoff fantasy picks... :O

Skins kicked it now it time for a Florida team to win.....Go Jaqs

Hey, I had Bucs, over, 7. So I screwed the pooch on the winning team and the over/under, but do I get a point for the spread?

LBB- you get TWO points for correctly picking the spread- that's why I'm pissed I changed it from skins/over/7 (worth 3 points) to skins/under/3 (worth two points). I got one more of my picks right, but lost an actual point.

Well then, yaaaay for me! And go Pats!

Yeah well the Redskins didn't win by my "breezy" 12 and the game was under so I get only one...

Fuck- I won't have a leaderboard any time soon, as stupid MS Excel refuses to save a goddamn simple fucking html table that isn't 50 fucking KB of garbage MS Office shitbag tags. What the fucking fuck is so bad about just making a simple

? Why all this fucking shit crap goddamn piss fuck fuck fuck! I hate Microsoft. >:(

Damm Thought Vinateri was gonna pass it. Puoch kick. Zippinglou u scary dude

...Vinatieri kicks a what??? Show that again. (p.s. Hal is right. Microsoft-generated HTML blows donkey dick.)

Doesn't anybody in the playoff have a F**king offense

What'd I miss (esp regarding Vinateri)? I was wrestling with HTML...

Come on Pats get your heads outa your ass

he faked a FG 46yrder to pouch kick. It did pin the Jags at the 3

Hal, you could try making a table on word.

Word was just as bad, man. :( Even with HTML filtering, it makes a 40k file of lots of embedded CSS. I'm looking for a quicker way to make a very simple- and I mean SIMPLE- table of type

val1 val2

with the relevent data, without having to hand-type it! :(

Hal, you could try making a table on word. And then do what with it? SpoFi's based on HTML, not Word.

Scoreless 1st qtr. Crap

You know...poop. I took the over on this one too.

Yeah, that over pick is looking pretty stupid right now, although I might get lucky on the spread- this thing could end 7-0. :( *sigh*... this could be a long weekend.

Patience pays off. Go Pats!

ok finally some offense.

this could be a long weekend yea, Thank God I got 2 cases Bass Pale Ale or this weekend could really suck!

You guys should have known better than to pick over. If skydivemom picks it - STAY AWAY from it. My luck is horrid and I suck at this!

FUMBLE.... Pats recover...

Yaaaay a turnover! This game could get interesting yet. (but that was, for sure, the Most Boring. First Quarter. EVAR.)

And then do what with it? SpoFi's based on HTML, not Word. That is why I'm in computer applications and not running a website. Go Pats.

A punt, I'm doomed... Where's that famous Pat intensity?

Damn. I just realized I picked the Pats by 17.........

Well, stranger things have happened, Ying Yang...although unless they start happening in the next three minutes, it's gonna be one quiet halftime show. "So, um...what happened in the first half, John?" "Well, remarkably little, actually." "Oh."

2 min warning. Someone put me outa my misery. Some of the worst playoff football I,ve ever seen. Like watching paint dry.

can 2 teams possibley be this bad?

Pats by 17 seems more likely at this point than that stupid "Over" pick. Chrissakes... I suck at Commishing! What idiot came up with these stupid rules!? grumble, grumble

Wow, a field goal.

Deon Branch dropped the f.... wide open My God thats pathetic

Off the numbers, skydivedad. Okay. Anyone care to imagine what the come-to-Jesus meeting in the locker room is gonna sound like?

Ouch- I could have used that touchdown! :( Branch must be kicking himself, that was MASSIVELY catchable. A pro receiver should catch those in his sleep... and wow, that was a quick first half. Hey, thoughts from the gallery- as Commish, I'm wondering if I should have made the pick values as 2 points for the winner, 2 points for the over/under, and 3 points for the spread (it's currently 1/1/2). Seems like that might give the spread some value, but not make it so a spread can essentially make the other picks moot?

OK I'm gonna need a couple more cases of Pale Ale to make it through this crap

Yea, Make that change next weekend Hal

But not this weekend! I need my two points in order to rule you all.

I'm looking for a quicker way to make a very simple- and I mean SIMPLE- table of type

val1 val2

with the relevent data, without having to hand-type it! 1. save your Excel file as a comma-separated text file. 2. run 2 find-replaces (comma with comma, line with
line
) in the text file 3. add the
tags Presto!

Every 1 rides the Bears for no offense. 4 teams today and only 2 offensive TDs.

it's the half, skydivedad. Go get another beer and a bowl of cheez doodles and siddown.

Thanks qbert- I'd already started working on a version of that idea, just getting the columns such that I can do easier find/ replaces. I've been using excel to make padding columns with text values, so that the replace can use those to do the right replacing... I'll wait till this game is over, however- no point in doing it now, and then re-doing it in 90 minutes. :)

it's the half, skydivedad. Go get another beer and a bowl of cheez doodles and siddown. posted by lil_brown_bat at 8:37 PM CST on January 7 skydivedad is half in the bag and I have cut him off from the...........cheez doodles.

Apparently, the Jacksonville 2nd half strategy is to blame this on the telecommunications guys. Sad... I inferred from Tafoyo's comments that Delrio was implying this was NE's doing. Ouch...

Ha! Ha! Did I tell you that Andre Davis was gonna earn his pay or what? Huh? Didn't I? Huh? (okay, I didn't figure it would be like that, but...)

"GO COWBOY'S" LMAO!!!!! :-)

Anybody seen my cheese-doodles?

Woo Ben Watson woooooooohooooooooo!!!! I don't think I've got a hope for the spread, but if this keeps up they could get over...

Watson Ton of desire. Great YAC! over looking a little better!

now THAT is some great fucking running!! Gotta love those second chance runs- throw off the tackle and BOOM goes the dynamite! Hey, this game could be an "over" if the Patriots keep scoring with such ease... :)

Hal, do you have the Mozilla suite, specifically Composer? My strategy with the WS pool was to copy the table from Excel and paste it into Composer. Mozilla picks up the table formatting but without all the Microsoft crap. The end result is clean code (mostly) free of useless markup.

3rd qtr over, Jags should go to Garrard now Brian being ineffective. need a spark

I think I'd do it in Excel, add the tags in separate columns when it's all done, export it as tab-separated or comma-separated whatever, and then do a global replace. But that's me.

Holy crap!

wow TD Pats off the pic. I told em to go to Garrard, over looking better

This is great. I'm listening to the game on the radio in the kitchen. The radio is about fifteen seconds ahead of the TV broadcast, so whenever anything happens (like that interception), I can run out to the living room and catch it in time.

Now, did I not also say something before this game about Asante Samuel??? Listen to Madden: "Now, that's just showing you something about Patriot defense..." Yeah, the secondary that was sooooo weak before this game started...uh huh, keep talkin'... Isn't it amazing? Adam Vinatieri hasn't done anything but kick extra points and a punt all night. Not at all what I figured on.

surprisingly few penalties this game...

That Branch play at the end of the first half was emminently "catchable"? He was running full out to catch a ball thrown over his shoulder. Give it a try sometime.

And I don't think Byron Leftwich is the problem. What would Garrard be doing better?

In general Leftwich has been great. However, he's starting to gimp pretty badly.

To say he anticipated that wouldn't do justice to how fucking clearly Asante Samuel read that play happening... Holy christ. Well, this game is effectively over- I feel bad for the jaguar fans, but at least it's a mercy killing; they're getting beaten so bad they at least won't have to spend the winter obsessing over one interception, or one missed field goal. They're getting thrashed, and right now the Pats look like they're as bad-ass as they were last year. We have only two reasons left to watch this game:The over line- it's 38.5, and we're at 31 points right now. Anything more than 7 points more (a TD + FG, or 3 FGs, etc) will ensure the over lineViciously mocking rogers "Stone Cold Lock" cadenhead for the remaining 15 minutes. :)Man, you just DON'T bet against Brady and Belicheck this time of year. They made the mighty Colts and Steelers look pathetic last year, and they're making a 12-5 team look like they shouldn't even be in the playoffs....

Adam Vinatieri hasn't done anything but kick extra points and a punt all night. Not at all what I figured on. posted by lil_brown_bat at 9:23 PM CST on January 7 Sorry my fault - I picked him in my fantasy league. Again I say "I suck"

yerfatma: I might not make that catch, but he was wide open, the ball was at his numbers, and he's a NFL professional football receiver on a two-time defending super bowl championship team. He's paid to catch those, not just to catch the ones that I could catch. Granted, it's academic, unless it turns out that catch was the difference between over/under. skydivemom: Suck?! Ha- right now you're in the running for the prestigious "Costanza" trophy- you at best will have 1 point at the end of today! :)

To say he anticipated that wouldn't do justice to how fucking clearly Asante Samuel read that play happening... Did you see how he robbed that guy? What body english -- that guy was just floored! Holy christ. Well, this game is effectively over- I feel bad for the jaguar fans, but at least it's a mercy killing; they're getting beaten so bad they at least won't have to spend the winter obsessing over one interception, or one missed field goal. The Leftwich decision will get chewed to death, though. We have only two reasons left to watch this game: * The over line- it's 38.5, and we're at 31 points right now. Anything more than 7 points more (a TD + FG, or 3 FGs, etc) will ensure the over line * Viciously mocking rogers "Stone Cold Lock" cadenhead for the remaining 15 minutes. :) Why do we have to stop mocking him in fifteen minutes? Oh my god, the Jaguwires blew a field goal. This is getting sad. Betcha Leftwich gets pulled.

Garrard be doing better? How about releasing the Ball quicker, avoiding sacks, and running without the limp and scoring a touchdown to name a few. Hey I,m just trying to get the over at this point. Jags need to score

Oh I forgot to add avoiding interceptions

why do we have to get the over by the Jagwires getting points? The Pats could do it for us with another couple of TDs.

prestigious "Costanza" trophy My new goal in life!

QB switch. Big surprise. Leftwich must feel like shit, poor guy.

I'm kewl with the Pats scoring for the over but skydivemom is on the Jags and I want my cheese-doodles back. :)

I told rcade he was Doomed because skydivemom picked the Jags 2 days before his stonecold lock article went public

Besides Pats will just sit on the ball run clock and not score.

Careful the couch is calling your name and you can forget about your cheez doodles.

Besides Pats will just sit on the ball run clock and not score. Unfortunately, that's probably true. They'll only score if they get a big opportunity; on the other hand, there hasn't exactly been a big shortage of those today.

Gambling is weird- I'm sitting here desperately rooting for the Jags to make this TD so we're one score (such as a FG drive) from making the over. I'm not hopeful, though: even if the Jaguars score and get the 2-point conversion, they'd need 3 more TD to even tie. Which means the remaining few minutes no one may score...

damm Hang on 2 the ball. There goes the over

You know what's impressed me about the Patriots this game? Their tackling. Rarely does a tackle get broken on them. Usually the first guy who leeches on is the one who brings the carrier down. That's impressive.

Turn out the light the "over" is over.

I can't wait to see the leaderboard. Weird couple o games.

I'm impressed with the half time adjustments the Pats made to the offense. They stunk in the 1st half.

wowo Brady's game QB rating 116. Damm

The leaderboard is a clusterfuck at the top right now- zac4667 had the lead at 3 points going into the game, with a bunch at 2 right behind him... however, he picked OVER as did about half of the 2-pt SpoFites. No one, obviously, picked 25, 28, or 32 as the spread. :)

Now that the Pats game is over, I would like to take this moment to mention: Dion Phaneuf has one HELL of a slapshot.

WILLIE! YEAH!

Four and a half sacks... that's crazy. It was like the Waterboy tonight for Willie McGinnest. The LEADERBOARD can now be found on my user profile page. Several tied for the lead after day one with 4 of a possible 8 points; several more just a point behind at 3. In other words, this thing is still wide open, and anyone could win this thing. The Sportsfilter collective has two points through 2 games, which puts it right in the middle of the pack.

and anyone could win this thing. Except for rcade, obviously. Heh.

My picks sucked but my team won in a big way. I can live with it.

Congrats to all the Pats and Wash fans. My picks sucked today as well. Oh well I,ve still sitting on 1/2 case of Bass Pale Ale for tommorrow. I did manage however to get exiled to the couch again for this evening. Skydivemom is a sore loser!

Now that the Pats beat the Jags, we have to start getting ready for Mile High - Denver.... I say go to Mexico City.... train there a few days, then Denver will feel like playing at sea level.... Go Pats....

justgary: and anyone could win this thing. Except for rcade, obviously. Heh.
Heh- that won't get old anytime soon. I really can't fathom the thinking behind putting as your "stone cold lock" the first round defeat of the back-to-back defending champs, at home. Just blows my mind. Although I do think, in the tradition of the WWE, we should now refer to our esteemed fellow as "Stone Cold Rogers Cadenhead" for the length of the playoffs. :D skydivedad: you're hardly out of it, after all. You're 3 points behind, one lucky pick tomorrow on a spread and BOOM goes the dynamite, you're back in it!

No one, obviously, picked 25, 28, or 32 as the spread. :) I should get a point for closest. (17)

Actually, 86 picked a spread of 20, so he'd be the closest. But there are no points for close... :)

Hal, seems like you've sorted out the EXCEL to simple HTML problems you had, but I've been doing a variation on what LBB suggested, i've got the simple clean html code stored in various columns on the spreadsheet with empty columns for "content" in between. I paste the content into the correct spots, copy the area of interest to Word, find and replace (remove) all tabs and paragraph returns and it is good to go.

I really can't fathom the thinking behind putting as your "stone cold lock" the first round defeat of the back-to-back defending champs, at home. Just blows my mind. Actually, I think he did it for humor value. ...right, rcade? You were joking, right?

Actually, I think he did it for humor value. Rcade? Seriously?

Rcade? Seriously? Well, I just thought, how could somebody who picked Benedict on the nose be so completely, stone-cold-locked wrong...

...right, rcade? You were joking, right? Nope. I had some fun with the hubris of it -- choosing Raymond Clayborn as my example instead of Joe Namath -- but I wouldn't violate the sanctity of the stone cold lock with a sarcastic prediction. I really thought the Jaguars would win. After the game ended in the third quarter, I found myself in a world I neither expected nor could fully comprehend. I felt like those primitive island tribes who survived the tsunami and then fired arrows at would-be relief boats, figuring that they were bringing more trouble with their boom sticks. That Bill Belichick fellow is putting together a nice little team up there in New England. They could be a team to watch in the future.
