Famous Spanish Matador Knocked Out by Bull: One of Spain's top matadors was knocked unconscious by a bull Saturday. Jose Pedro Prados, known as "El Fundi," was rushed to the hospital and is being treated for a skull fracture. The Spanish-language news site Cope.es has the video and a photo, which are disturbing.

He fought the bull and lost. Did the bull ask for that fight? I think not. My sympathies are with the bull.

You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

When situations like this happen, there's only one thing that comes to mind.

Wow. Moron.

The video is more boring that disturbing. I'm admittedly not a bullfighting aficionado, but I was struck by how mundane and repetitive the whole thing appears. What's the appeal of watching men twirl a cape around a wounded, exhausted and dying bull?

That bull had the misfortune of meeting "El Fundi," but I'm glad he got a chance to make an impression before being killed for sport.

Not sure I need all of the gore y details.

Those in favour of bullfighting argue that it's a sport, don't they? Well, the bull won.

To watch them crash, apparently.

twirl a cape drive a car around a wounded, exhausted and dying bull track.

Careful, your straw man might crash into the straw bull.

The point I was making is that they are both boring and mundane activities when done well, but there is a part of human nature that wants to see the small element of danger eventually result in a fiery crash or a goring.

So Nascar allows bulls on the racetrack now?

I've been to a NASCAR event...a bull on the track would have been a huge improvement.

I always cheer for the bull. So much more fun when they win.

irunfromclones: Very clever:)

Yes. It would be nice if this got the bull a quiet retirement.

dusted, I totally get owlie's comment, which is more or less the same that a lot of Americans say about soccer, right? Nasty business for this matador nonetheless.

I understand it and agree with that point, too. Elite performers (of anything: driving, bullfighting or ballet) can make impossible tasks appear easy. And I understand the draw of watching when these amazing performers screw up.

But bullfighting is about the "crash" - the death of the bull. The danger to the matador is minimal enough that it's news when one gets hurt. I love to watch Formula 1, and I've watched Kubica's crash ten times. But F1 is about the racing - the crashes are ancillary, even if the ever-present danger makes it more intense.

Reminds me of the old joke about the American couple visiting Spain who went to a restaurant that served the penis and testicles of the bull that had "lost" in the ring that day. The couple wanted to try the exotic dish but were told they had to reserve it in advance. This they did, and returned the next week anticipating their treat. When the serving appeared to be quite a bit smaller than what they had seen the previous week, they asked the waiter for an explanation. He answered, "Oh, you see, this week the bull won."

Kubica's crash always freaks me out, all the more that he walked away from it...
