NHL Playoffs Confidence Pool: You know you want it.

I know I want it, anyway. I need revenge for my poor showing in this year's Fantasy League.

Pick one, please. Fine. I'll go with my "head" selections. I have 65,536 entries. I like to cover my permutations. Personally, if you were able to enter all those selections before the playoffs started, I'd be quite willing to let you have them.

posted by grum@work at 11:34 AM on April 10, 2007

Geez, Weedy, isn't it enough that you cracked skulls in the Yahoo hockey thing? (Of course, I heard you cheated by utilizing the highly controversial SHP category.)

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 12:28 PM on April 10, 2007

Thank you, thank you. I feel my ownership of SHP was more than offset by my terrible result in PIMs. The real tragedy is that I should be two-time champion right now - but managed my rookie season badly enough to run out of games with more than 2 weeks to go. Frankly, next season I'm voting for a more simple array of stats. Maybe stick to G, A, PPP, GWG and W, SVs, SV%. Perhaps one of +/-, PIMs and/or SHP for a 'wildcard' category. Less is more, I feel.

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 12:53 PM on April 10, 2007

I'll go with my "head" selections. Noted. I'll leave your "heart" picks in, but they won't count for trophy consideration, in fairness to all the others. Less is more, I feel. Agreed. GWG are an awful stat, though. Congratulations from the no-longer-defending champ, Weedy!

posted by qbert72 at 01:48 PM on April 10, 2007

Thank you sir. I can only hope to wear the crown with as much dignity and pride as you did. Plus, I'll likely gloat way more. Yeah - GWG is another crapshoot stat - but at least it was closely contested. I mean - if you had good goal scorers on your team, you were likely to be competitive in terms of GWGs. But hey, if we want to drop that category too, I can dig it. I just think it's best to have at least one more stat than goaltending (possibly two), so the pool isn't dominated by goalies.

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 02:32 PM on April 10, 2007

If you really want a "less is more" league: G, A, W, SV. Done. Those are the things that make a difference in the actual game. I don't understand the use of PPP, which basically says that a goal made on a power play is twice as valuable as a goal made skating even. GWG is a terrible stat to me, since it is more a measure of the player's team than the player himself. Shots per game or goals per shot might be interesting if you want an offensive ratio stat. On the goalie side, I would actually rather see saves per game than SV% since it rewards having good goalies who also get regular playing time (though maybe there is too much reward for goalies on teams with poor defenses). But I'm a rookie at this fantasy hockey thing, so take all that for what it's worth.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 03:16 PM on April 10, 2007

Perhaps one of +/-, PIMs and/or SHP for a 'wildcard' category. i would probably go with PIM since it seems to be one of the few stats that would give a 3rd or 4th d-man some value, no? also, i think i read somewhere that Yahoo was considering getting rid of the GWG stat for next year.

posted by goddam at 03:58 PM on April 10, 2007

But hey, if we want to drop that category too, I can dig it. I just think it's best to have at least one more stat than goaltending (possibly two), so the pool isn't dominated by goalies. Shhh! Don't say that! Dominating the goaltending stats is how I've finished in the medals all 4 seasons of the pool. Not only did I draft two great goalies (Turco, Brodeur), but I even picked up the top goalie in GAA and SV% off the waiver scrapheap (Backstrom)! I would definitely dump the wild-card stats (SHP, GWG) and keep PIM (to provide value for the #3 and #4 defencemen). GAA and Saves would be the two goalie stats I would like to see kept (as wins is more a product of the team than the player, and having one rate stat and one counting stat stops someone from gaming the system).

posted by grum@work at 05:07 PM on April 10, 2007

G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP; SV, SV%, W, SO Wanna end goalie domination? Only allow one goalie spot per roster.

Wanna end goalie domination? Only allow one goalie spot per roster. posted by The_Black_Hand at 7:02 PM CDT on April 10 I think the Yahoo default setting is 2 goalies and I don't believe that can be changed but I might be wrong. Congrats to Sir Weedy for his outstanding performance. He is indeed a Quality Champion that replaced the prior Quality Champion. I'll play with whatever stats you guys decide. I'm more concerned that goalie stats make up 40% of the scoring. Doesn't matter to me which stats are used to accomplish that. IMHO the Goalie stats being at 36.7% of scoring this year isn't a proper representation of what they mean in the Real NHL. OK, Rant over. Bring on the Playoffs and at least the Blackhawks managed to win the lottery for #1 Draft Pick! I'm sure they'll find a way to screw it up however. Kinda how I played in the Fantasy League.

posted by skydivedad at 07:40 PM on April 10, 2007

as wins is more a product of the team than the player Is that true? I haven't done a study of it but, like wins for a pitcher, I have been under the impression that wins are a pretty good measure of the quality of the goalie (even if that result is sometimes incidental). You don't see too many great goalies missing the playoffs. It may not be a totally true measure, but what measure of individual achievement in a team sport could possibly be perfect?

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 08:51 PM on April 10, 2007

don't go touching SHP. I won that category. PPP was the one that held me back. So, obviously, let's lose that one. And really, this discussion should take place in a real lockerroom there wherein we can properly give Weedy the hurrahs.

Dear everyone: I'm sorry that as Commissioner I didn't put together a final poolie post (I've spent the last month or so trying to keep my job instead of paying attention to the things that matter, like Spofi, the Wednesday trivia night, and my once-promising career as a volunteer alcoholic), but congratulations to Senor McSmokey are definitely in order.

The SpoFi Collective is in. Heavy favorite: Buffalo, with an average 14,78 points. Wild underdog: Islanders, with an average of 2,16 points. Solid contenders (averages between 10 and 12): Ducks, Wings, Preds, Devils. One step below (between 8 and 10): Canucks, Rangers, Senators, Penguins, Sharks. The other teams are bunched up around 6 points. If the Sabres tank and the Islanders go far, skydivemom will kill us all. Thanks to apoch for offering his help with results entry.

Calgary's not out of the question as a pick - although they sure forgot to show up yesterday. Frankly, I think I have seriously underestimated Vancouver. That could be a huge mistake.
