Rangers forward Avery Hospitalized Sean Avery suffers a lacerated spleen in Tuesday's loss to the Pens and is out of the playoffs.

Was it a hit, or a spear? Anything that stood out to someone watching? 2 points for debo.

I've been trying to figure out when it happened but haven't seen anything as of yet. According to the article on the NHL's website, the Rangers don't know when it happened so apparently it's nothing obvious. The article I linked to states that he was unconscious and not breathing when he arrived at the hospital at 3am, the NHL's article states that the Rangers say he walked in on his own; talk about two different versions of a story. I guess we'll be waiting a bit for accurate details.

Thanks for keeping the score. I guess Bo does know. Looked like a clean shot he took. As much as I hate him, he did finish the game. Pens eye another sweep. I HAVE A QUESTION AND THIS IS THE CROWD TO ASK. Has anyone ever won the cup in 16 games(4 series sweeps)

Yeah, Avery may be a bit of an idiot, what with the stick waving in front of the goalie that precipitated a rule change in mid-playoffs, but I hope he gets better soon.

Does anyone know what happened? I can't remember anything from the game that looked horrible. Amazing he finished the game.

Cant believe you all missed when this happened. Gary Roberts lacerated Avery's spleen with his mind. Gary has powers.

karma is a bitch.

All I can to say to this is YIKES!

Avery may be one of my least favorite players in the history of the game, but I definitely wish him a full recovery. That's gotta be scary as hell, whether the unconcious story or the walking under his own power story is the real one. But gnutron's right, sometimes karma will bite you in the ass.

He did get rocked at one point and flipped over. I hope he recovers to further annoy everyone in the league.

* Let's Go Flyers!!

Hopefully Avery makes a full recovery. Lucky for him it doesn't look like his absence will hurt the Rangers for very long. I look forward to seeing him back on the ice as I for one find him entertaining.

How the HELL do you lacerate a spleen?

Playing hockey apparently.

How the HELL do you lacerate a spleen? This is the second time I've heard of a player lacerating their spleen during an NHL game. Peter Forsberg had to have his spleen removed after helping the Avalanche knocking off the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, missing the rest of the 2001 playoffs and all of the 2002 season.

Didn't Nik Borschevsky have some sort of spleen issue when he was with the Leafs?

Didn't Nik Borschevsky have some sort of spleen issue when he was with the Leafs? Nik Borschevsky de-spleened an entire generation of Detroit Red Wings fans back when the Leafs and Wings played more than once every other year (seriously, WTF is up with that?) and actually met up from time to time in the playoffs. I recall after that game that the local punditry (and probably Don Cherry, for that matter) said that Niklas Lidstrom's defensive gaffe on that goal (and probably his positional, rather than physical, style of play) showed that Europeans did not have what it took to be NHL defensemen.

Lidstrom had fairly decent numbers prior to that game: 164 games, 18 goals, 83 helpers, +43. Including 11 G, 49 A, and at +36 in his rookie year. Sounds like whoever said that was just down on Lidstrom's "sophomore slump". Stats.
