Hope Solo's comments after Sunday's loss are a little weird. Admitting that you could've won if you cheated and then suggesting that you're not sure you did the right thing by not cheating? It's honest, I'll say that much.

Cheating?

Not getting an injury treated immediately is "cheating"? I'm not seeing it.

EA Sports announces deal with Manchester football club. Just not the one people care about.

My bad. The embellishment of an injury is called "dirty tricks" in the article, and I injected my own editorializing in pre-coffee.

That Pawel Wolak-Delvin Rodriguez fight was amazing. No matter how much Rod hit Wolak (as evidenced by the above photo), Wolak kept going forward. A fight that you hate to see called as a Draw, but can completely understand, as both sides deserved to win it. Also, props to Steve Smoger as the ref for not getting in the way of the fighters.

Cycling chief's comment: PEDs in Tour de France are a good thing, or something like that.

Re: Holo. The article also mentions that her needing injury time allowed Japan the chance to regroup, and set on the immediate set piece. So perhaps if she didn't take any injury time at all, Japan wouldn't have scored on that corner.

They didn't seem to have an angle to show definitively, but that corner appeared to be pretty saveable. There was a defender on the near post, and Solo was only a few feet away. Best I could tell, the ball appeared to go right between them, and from a reasonably small angle. We may never know how much the injury affected her, but it looked like a ball that she usually stops.

The American team seemed flat footed on that corner.

This highlights the difference between playing hurt and playing injured. Holo did her team no favors by playing hurt. From that corner goal to the shootout, it was obvious she wasn't at her best. We'll never know if it would have made a difference, but I'm sure she'd like to go back and do things differently.

The corner where Japan scored went off Sawa's foot, then bounced off Wambach and changed direction, which is why Solo was going to her left while the ball went in to her right.

The deflection wrong-footed Solo, but that's why I really liked the tactics behind the near post flick-on: when the six-yard box is packed out, you can get that kind of pinball.

And to repeat myself: anything the keeper gives you in a shootout is a bonus. If you really want to second-guess, then ask why Wambach wasn't the first taker, because her technique was impeccable, and the others, with admittedly tired legs, couldn't get the height right.
