Week 1 results: Jim Bob is sitting pretty at the top while catfish bottom feeds. Isn't that what catfish normally do? At least I'm ahead of the WC. Compared to all the entrants, though, we collectively suck ass and even Jim Bob is not in the top 2,000!

Here's an idea: I think that at the end of every week, every manager should put a quote on here, stating their team's rank, and making some sorta cliched remark about that week's performance. Like this: Red Dragons manager, worldcup2002 [cue Gordon Strachan accent]: "Yeah, it wasn't a blazing start, but it's just the first week. I'm pleased with the boys' performance, everyone put up some points, we're 12th, which puts us in the top half. We're still fine-tuning our play, obviously, but we'll get better as the season continues. Kudos to the Buddha and Jim Bob, they've renewed their rivalry already. We don't have their riches, but the boys have a lot of heart. We'll be up there challenging, I'm sure."

Hahahaha, Fooker. About your yahoo position I mean. Well, then. As for Houllier's first-team picks, I was surprised he started with Heskey, but especially Carragher. I'm pretty much in your court about the picks and while I could see him putting Heskey in (he did have a good off-season), I was disappointed that Carragher was in instead of Finnan (my fantasy picks not being the least of it). And Biscan over Diouf? What the? Did you see the Soccernet Gamecast? Houllier started with a 3-5-2 formation - a total midfield traffic jam scenario. Let's start our season by being defensive -- at home! I fear Houllier's caution will kill him this season.

catfish is out of control. He's changed his whole team. But in hopes of winning the too-much-time-on-one's-hands award, I've calculated that that Iversen guy for Wolves collectively cost us 104 points (about 3.85 apiece -- unevenly distributed, of course, goddamn fucking shit) by scoring late against Blackburn. And that Olof Mellberg's omission affected more of us than that linesman did when he gave Owen another chance at that penalty. Somebody could solve this problem by giving me a job.

FB: Somebody had to be cocky. I was channeling StarFooker there. How did I do? bill: I assume you're talking about the PremierLeague version. Take a look at your player(s) with the lowest fantasy points. Then look at the Top 40 list of players in the same position as your low scorers. Find the ones in the Top 40 list that you can afford based on the price of the one you have to sell. Make the trade. I'd say based on this strategy, I'd drop O'Shea (0 points and not likely to be a regular, but worth 7.5! What were they thinking?) and buy Sun Ji Hai (12 pts, valued at 5) or Amoruso (11 pts, valued at 6.5), and you'd have money left over. It's OK, no charge for this advice. I expect my good karma will lift me to top of the PL.com league!

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:40 PM on August 18, 2003

bill: for yahoo, you'll get a jump start by looking at this top weekly performers page to get an idea of which players you might want on your team. Whether you can afford them is another question. (A tip I've shared before for the yahoo league: Buy your players for the next week, on the days that games are played this week. This way, you can get players before their prices skyrocket. Based on this strategy, I have four or five players that have gone up by 10-27 units in market value after I bought them this weekend. They have all scored fantasy points in the double-digits.)

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:57 PM on August 18, 2003

I fell for the old O'shea trick. I think they were thinking that he had made such an impact last year he was bound to be a regular and a high points scorer. I'm still not entirely sure that won't be the case as the season progresses, but I dumped him anyway. The main difference with Premier league is that defenders actually score points for good defending, so go for defenders from mean teams. With Yahoo, you just want someonse in any position who is likely to score or assist. In both you want players who will not constantly get booked. Cunningham of Birmingham is good for this. Ferdinand of Man U has only been booked once in summatt like 3 years, but is crap in Yahoo, he should be better in EPL, if affordable. Nice one WC2002, I thought you were the fuckers uglier sister there, for a minute.

In case anyone is interested... Here is the link to my soccernet team/league. 6 friends and myself, including etrader9 got together about 4 weeks ago and held a draft. We all have different players, we have to BUY any new players...but you can only actually get them on your team if you bid the highest. The bids are secret and are all revealed Friday afternoon and the one with the highest bid gets the player. In the event of a tie, the lower ranked player gets him. We set the money situation currently at 20 million pounds, with the monthly leader getting 5 million and the guy in last place getting 10 million. We pretty much set up all these rules ourselves and hopefully it will work out quite nice. So far I am really excited about this season and this Fantasy League means more to me the the EPL and Yahoo one so it will be getting most of my attention. I won't neglect the other two leagues though, so don't worry...i will win all 3. Click around on the site and check out all the cool things it has to offer... It updates immediately, we can get same time updates to our phones (if we lived in England). We get 2 or 3 weekly reports by email that are very comprehensive, including free agents, other teams top performers, etc... Its the best Fantasy League i have ever been in, the fact that we all have to have different players is what makes it the most challenging. In the draft i could only get ONE of my favorite players, John Arne Riise... Someone else got Kewell, and someone else got Dudek. The draft was alot of fun, drinking and talking shit. Everytime a player was sold, we were all sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the next player to be brought up for auction...good times. They do have a way where we could set up an online auction...i would like for all of us who are interested to participate next year...but, i know that could be very difficult. Plus, its about 43 dollars US. I have no problem with the money, i think its well worth it. I think the real fans here would like to be a part of it too, Buddha, worldcup, billsaysthis? Its too early to talk about it now, and i know it would be hard to get us all together...but think about it. Lets bring it up again at the end of the season.

O'Shea for Amorouso (who will play) is definitely a good move. I kept Friedel who as far as I'm concerned is the best keeper in the Premiership. The reason he didn't score many points is because he didn't have many shots to save. This is because Wolves are shit (sorry to keep repeating meself). I thought Heskey played well tonight for England though I'm probably on my own in this.

So i just got done watching the Liverpool Chelsea game... Dudek - 10, didn't do a thing wrong, made great saves. Henchoz - 8, did well mostly, falling caused the first goal Hyypia - 9, threatening on the corners and solid on defense Carragher - 5, made one nice tackle, sucked ass the rest of the game, winning goal was entirely his fault. Riise - 8, wasn't his usual threatening self on the side, made some nice passes AND tackles though. Solid defense. Cheyrou - 7, needs to play more, you can tell he is more creative than the usual Liverpool bunch and is holding back for fear of being subbed, which he did. Made a few nice passes. Diouf - 8.5, Came on as a sub, did well. Nice dribbling, earned a penalty. Caused havoc for the short time he was on the left side. Finnan - 7, I'm excited about this guy. Why oh WHY didn't he start instead of CRAPagher?! Kewell - 9.5, i stood up everytime he touched the ball. The guy is exciting to watch. He should have scored. He will get tired of the fucking midfield void soon enough and will go down as another star player who came to Liverpool only to disappear off the map of football. Murphy - 1, Carragher was a fucking star compared to this lead footed, talentless, lose the fucking ball everytime he touches it, assjob. Biscan - 6, This guy may be allright. He looked like a stranger out there. He also looked like a star compared to Murphy. Made some decent moves, made some questionable ones too. Owen - 7.5, He is a marked man. 3 guys on him anytime he had the ball. Still was able to play some decent football, but he has no partner in Heskey. Heskey - 4, the only reason he has a 4 is because he came back and helped on defense a bit. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT A STRIKER IS FOR!! What a useless git! Baros - 7, came on too late to make a difference. This game would have been entirely different if he was on from the beginning... Houllier is fucking mad or senile...bringing on Finnan for Henchoz?! And then putting Carragher at centerback?! Leaving Heskey on after he was fucking invisible?! And was Murphy even playing!? I wouldn't have even noticed if he didn't take a fucking free kick into the wall! I am going to cry now...

I think Henchoz was taken off hurt. And Finnan is probably not 100%. I'd like to see him get strong and start every game after, rather than get hurt at the start of the season. We'll absorb the Chelsea loss, it was close and we had tons more chances. I'd agree with moving Heskey to the bench and let Baros start. Heskey does bring stability to the side because he'll come back and help, but as SF says, that's NOT HIS JOB! Liverpool doesn't need more stability. It needs creativity! I was pleased to see Riise start at least a little further up, but it looks like he was still being the good defender. I think we're missing a real hard rampaging nut like McAllister (and Gerrard! Stop getting sent off, you plonker!). We need a midfield that strikes fear into the hearts of the opposition! When he was around two seasons ago, Riise was running free from defense, crossing, taking long-range shots and free kicks. Last season, Riise was more subdued because he was more focused on backline duties. So here's my new line-up for the Villa game. I think we can afford to be more adventurous, but given that it's an away game, I'm sure my dreams will be crushed. Dudek Finnan-Hyypia-Henchoz Murphy (I know, SF, you'd prefer Cheyrou here but somebody's got to be boring) Diouf-Gerrard-Riise Kewell Owen-Baros

Soton is lucky to have Phillips, but I'm betting on buh-buh-buh-buh-Birmingham! Go, Kenna! He's bostin', mate. Hahahahahahaha.

Oh, man. Chelsea's hosting L'ester? Man, L'ester must be peeing their pants. 5-1. Fookin' Duff better score a hattrick. What the ... yahoo's updated AGAIN! And Mossy is no. 1? What? trox must be going insane by now. He's been first twice and lost it, all in the same week. yahoo is taking their madness to a whole new level. They must have a pint at the end of each day and gather around the ol' update terminal and go "Hey, Neil, hit the "Randomize Database" key, eh? Give the ol' fantasy points a little spin. Heh! Heh! Yeh, that's bostin', mate."

Yahoo amuses me - they can't even add. Still, I wasn't expecting number 1 until week 5 at least :) PremierLeague looks like being a bit of a loss until about a quarter of the way through the season - buying for the future, doh..

posted by Mossy at 07:22 AM on August 22, 2003

YEah, mossy, I wondered about sacrificing some points to buy some good players early on. But I'm rather skint so I will leave be. I guess I'm the control case against cat "-46 pts" fish. Crazy!

-46?!

What the hell is going on with Freddy Adu?

posted by StarFucker at 02:13 PM on August 22, 2003

Well, he hasn't signed a big contract with Chelski (yet), even though eveyone else and their brother seem to be moving there (Crespo too?).

Why don't they just sign Paim while they're at it? Ah well, get em cheap and young - Man Utd got Beckham from London at 14 I believe :) Is it just me, or are there actually two sets of matchs this week? I've been watching the under-17s tournament on Eurosport - its quite amusing sometimes. Especially when colombia beat Finland 9-1. Kinda sad that too, memories of getting beaten when I was that age too.. :sigh:

Aargh! This is what happens when you don't pay attention to the rules or the scoring at all. To top it all off, they've gone and lost my account!!!! I have no team anymore. :( My Yahoo squad will kick all a yas this week, though. I have to disagree with your ratings a little, SF. Cheyrou was abysmal, as was Riise. Grokaer owned him.

posted by sauril at 06:10 PM on August 22, 2003

ok, major changes. we'll see what happens. And I finally found my team again. stupid premierleague.com btw SF, we both made the same mistake, didn't we. Given.

posted by sauril at 06:22 PM on August 22, 2003

Who have you picked, old chap? How many points did it cost?

posted by Fat Buddha at 06:27 PM on August 22, 2003

Hey fellas, if you need to keep up on the latest player news and injuries, you can try FISO. And the Pundit column at PremierLeague is a breezy read if you need to know about players you can't afford.

posted by worldcup2002 at 07:59 PM on August 22, 2003

Also, for the yahoo players, pls note: Deadline to edit players for Week 3 is Sun 24 Aug 11:59PM BST. Yes, you have two days to set up your team for next week. Weird.

What the hell is THAT about?!

posted by StarFucker at 01:22 AM on August 23, 2003

Newcastle 1 Man Ure 2, which puts me 4 points ahead of Star Unsuitable, so far.

posted by Fat Buddha at 08:27 AM on August 23, 2003

Ahhh.. I was right about the 2 matches this week for yahoo - the deadline on sunday is for the midweek matches methinks :)

posted by Mossy at 09:25 AM on August 23, 2003

Having donated 4 points, I still appear to be strolling away at the top. Come on starfucker, how about a bit of chuffing competition?

posted by Fat Buddha at 12:13 PM on August 23, 2003

Ruud's goal was sweet, that lovely little touch off the side of his foot for positioning and then the little lift over Givens. And another strong outing for Howard. Too bad I hate the Devils.

Looks like your sacrifice paid off, FB. We shall see about yahoo. Today's games have convinced me to stop tinkering with the side. Just leave well enough alone. I mean, I should know this after playing two seasons of the yahoo league. Tinkering rarely gets you anywhere. I leave the MLS team alone, and I've gone up from crap to championship contender. I see I've done OK in the PremierLeague, but that's 'cause I only traded one player. Ever onward!

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:04 PM on August 23, 2003

I sacrificed for next week, not this week, good job as Cole didn't play. I think my Yahoo team has probably scored zero points, though the way they make it up as they go along I could well end up with a million points.

posted by Fat Buddha at 02:09 PM on August 23, 2003

Minimally related: this story is actually about Dick Advocaat.

posted by taupe at 01:08 PM on August 24, 2003

Aaargh! Star Unsuitable has snuck ahead by one point! I want my 4 points back.

posted by Fat Buddha at 01:15 PM on August 24, 2003

72 points for Terrapin United for week 2. Best of the week, and enough to move into third. :)

posted by scully at 06:44 PM on August 24, 2003

I sacrificed 8 points for next week. I've still got a couple of high-price stragglers but I'm giving them one more week to perform before I trade 'em. My PremierLeague position is shite this week. But I'll be back. If a point sacrifice can work for FB, it can work for me! Can't wait to see when yahoo is updated. btw, I've moved up to #3 in the MLS, closing in on the Fooker (140pts away) and etrader9 (370pts). I am on course to win this!

posted by worldcup2002 at 07:06 PM on August 24, 2003

Hey, don't fall in love with your PL.com Wk 2 positions. There's still another round to play this week. YEAH!

posted by worldcup2002 at 07:07 PM on August 24, 2003

Oi wc 2002, I sacrificed after yesterdays games. I am pissed off that my points were deucted immediately. Based on the players I have picked in games actually played, I would be on top. My yahoo position is even worse than I thought. I forgot I had Parker, who got sent off.
