Sox ship Renteria to Braves: The Edgar-era is over in Boston. In exchange, Boston gets 3B prospect Marte. Unless Youkilis moves over to 1B it looks like he won't be in Boston much longer.

Boston already has Lowell at 3B, as far as Youkilis is concerned. Marte is going to Tampa Bay for Lugo.

Maybe they will go after Nomar. His Agent has been calling Cashman to see if the Yankees are interested in Nomar for center field.

Lowell is rumored to be on the block. The Twins was one team looking at him until the Red Sox wanted Jaun Rincon. Nomar in Boston again? Hasn't there been too many bridges burnt by both sides for that to happen?

Nomar won't go back to Boston. Just remove that possibility now.

Unless it's a trip in a Jays or Yankees uniform.

He is a free agent and he still has his home there. But I agree the bridges have been burnt there as he has twice tried to become a Yankee. He wanted to play second the same year they got Arod for 3rd. Now he wants to be their center fielder. They weren't interested then and I'd be real surprised if they were now.

Nomar's stock has plunged.

It is funny because everyone thought that Walt Jocketty was insane for shipping out Renteria and bringing in David Eckstein. However, Walt the Wizard GM seems to have known something because Renteria just got traded for a 3B prospect and Eckstein is considered the "scrappiest" player in the majors and the poster boy for all those undertalented, undersized, underrated hopefuls.

Has Nomar really expressed interest in the Yankees or is that "wishful thinking" on the part of the "Yankee Press." Nomar can help himself by going to a smaller makret and "build" up his stock. Why would he want to be a part of the Yankee-Red Sox circus.

posted by daddisamm at 12:06 PM on December 08, 2005

Why would he want to be a part of the Yankee-Red Sox circus. Because with the yankees he could get back at the red sox. Because he can make more money with the yankees than anyone else. Why wouldn't he want to be part of the circus?

From the Boston Herald:

The Red Sox could still strike a deal with the Devil Rays for shortstop Julio Lugo but they will have competition from other players.
Some please explain to me, when exactly did Julio Lugo become every one's favorite shortstop possibility?

daddisam this is what I was talking about unfortunately it isn't wishful think by the new york media. General manager Brian Cashman recently heard from Arn Tellem, who represents Garciaparra, about the idea of the Yankees signing the 32-year-old free agent. "I've heard from Arn in the past about him," Cashman said. "I'm talking to everybody about anybody on the free agent market that may fit." According to one person with knowledge of the situation, Tellem has been shopping Garciaparra around as a multi-position player, including an outfielder.

Renteria for Lugo? That makes little to no sense to me.

Does anybody know the details of the trade. Did the sox have to pick up part of Renteria's contract?

The Loretta trade, if final, is an absolute steal for Boston. He'll hit in that number 2 hole and produce well for them.

I think that this is a good trade for the Braves. They mentioned Renteria's errors this year, but, with the exception of this year, hasnt Furcal struggled with errors?

As a Sox fan this situation makes me queasy. Can we have a do-over for last year and somehow get Orlando Cabrera back?? Although he's been rumored in a Manny deal, the Angels know better than to let him go. So, we end up with Tampa Bay's shortstop. This is supposed to be a good thing? Why should I be convinced Lugo will be any better than "rent-a-wreck"? (Plus, I've now been deprived of the low entertainment of singing my Edgar Renteria version of the Macarena "Hey, renteria!" -- but somehow I doubt anyone else, particularly my roommates, would consider that tragic.) And, we get to eat a big chunk of his contract. I guess Larry and his minions want any memory of Theo purged from the organization. Jerseygirl is right -- Youk is at first, barring a better aquisition. 2B- Loretta, that's a good pickup although I hate to lose Mirabelli. SS - ugh. 3B - double ugh. Nomah can still hit, and most fans would welcome him back...but I don't see it happening. His defense smells like Rich Garces' locker. The outfield is anyone's guess, and basically every pitcher in the rotation save Wakefield is on offer for trades. What the hell is going on on Yawkey Way?!

Boston has done super well this off-season. The Beckett and Loretta deals (What the fuck are the Padres thinking?) were both great. Getting proven young major league talent for essentially unproven prospects. This deal seems to me to be the precursor to the Lugo deal. They wanted the Renteria (who is much better than one year in Boston suggests) money off the table. Braves are getting a guy who could concievably hit 2 or 6 with some pop and plenty of hits. Now if they only can keep Manny, heats back on the Yankees - who so far have had a remarkably poor showing. Still need a CF, and a lot of help pitching - both in the rotation and especially in that terrible bullpen. Farnsworth may be one piece of the ol' puzzle.

ESPN is reporting the Sox are paying 8 Million of the remaining contract and also the 3 Million buyout if the Braves do not pick up the option at the end of the contract.

posted by MPeter at 02:09 PM on December 08, 2005

No doubt, Weedy. Infield prospects are not something the Red Sox need to accumulate right now, except maybe some slugging 1Bs. there's another deal involving Andy Marte on the horizon. Unless someone else backs out on them, like they did on the Rockies, and they end up holding the hot Marte-to! Now that, that is a bad joke.

By the way, Kevin Towers of the Padres is thinking "I wish I had more money." He's been quoted in Boston papers saying he wishes he could afford to keep Loretta but free agent catchers are demanding way too much $$, and he needed some extra scratch to re-sign Trevor Hoffman. Mirabelli is probably the best veteran backup C out there, and a steal, so it makes sense for the lowly Pads. That's the reality of GMing in San Diego. If there was a 1=1 ratio of good sports fans to incredibly attractive women, it would be the best sports town in America.

Did the sox have to pick up part of Renteria's contract? There's an easy way to find that out...read the article. "Boston will pay $8 million of the $26 million Renteria is owed for the next three seasons. In addition, the Red Sox must pay the $3 million buyout if his $11 million option for 2009 is declined."

posted by The_Black_Hand at 03:01 PM on December 08, 2005

I was never that impressed with Renteria, except for a couple seasons he put together in St. Louis. He made a lot of errors last season. The Red Sox made a good deal getting Loretta. Everything, unfortunately for them, is now coming down to getting Manny and/or Damon back. Their offense, without those two, is beginning to look very ordinary. As for Nomar, the guy, if healthy, is still a great, great bat. The health is a huge "if" though.

The most recent speculation is Marte isn't going anywhere at the moment and all indications are that the Red Sox will try the FA market for a SS... which is a bunch of bruised apples, basically. Although... heard something that Tejada wants out of Baltimore? That'd be sweet.

Don't worry, once Renteria becomes a free agent, he is gone. The Braves never keep anyone who just had a quality season (except if their last name is Jones.).

The important thing to remember is that you don't want to keep a player just because he had a quality season. You want to keep a player because his NEXT season will be a quality one. It's the same with offering contracts: don't pay for what they've done, pay for what they are going to do.
