Dallas Burns!: In order to be "all-inclusive for those in the Dallas-Fort Worth area," Lamar Hunt is changing the name of his franchise to FC Dallas. I really like the 96 on the new badge though it does remind me quite a bit of another Texas team's logo. Smart or fruity? Let's debate!

I was so going to make this post tomorrow. Damn billy! That said, I'm glad my rumor mill is reliable. Someday, and I make no promises, I'll stop bitching about the FC/Burn moving 45 minutes away from where I live (just north of Downtown). 'Til then, I'll just offer this anecdote: I was talking to a coworker that is a big sports nut, but is a philistine and doesn't get soccer. I tried to explain about the Burn moving and the new name, which went kind of like this: me: "yeah, from what I hear, they're going to be called FC Dallas" him: "FU Dallas?" me: "well, since that seems to be what they're saying, that'd be appropriate" /bitterness

So what does FC mean? Football Club?

posted by gyc at 12:23 AM on August 13, 2004

Why is the FC in front? Where do they think they are? Germany? FC Shalke? FC Dallas? Why not Dallas FC? Why open them up to "FU Dallas"? I would've preferred: Dallas Oilmen, Dallas Ewings, Dallas JRs, Dallas Riggers, Dallas (Gold) Diggers! hoo hoo hoo.

Yes, FC means Football Club...and I LIKE it. Much better than Dallas Burn. Now we need to change Chicago Fire to AC Chicago, or Chicago Hotspur...

Looks like the name may have already been taken by these girls. Let's hope they see some $$$ and improved uniforms.

The new name is great -- sounds like a team in the Premiership. MLS teams ought to adopt more traditions of their international counterparts, like relegation and the way they aggressively cultivate a fan following on the Web and with supporters-only programs (example).

Actually, Chicago Fire is one of the few MLS names I like (DC United and Columbus Crew being the other two). They at least get the shield idea right.

I like it too. I've long wondered why the continued North American obsession with City-plus-snazzy-nickname as a format. (I know, I know, merchandising, revenue streams, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc). But it seems that others are questioning it as well, and good on MLS for messing with the paradigm even a little bit. I actually always had a problem with DC United's name, thinking that because there was only ever one DC team it wasn't like they needed to show that all the DC teams had "united" under one umbrella, but then I checked and realized that I thought wrong. So, good naming conventions all around, MLS. And nice shieldy logo, FC Dallas.

Dallas (Gold) Diggers Well someone's been hanging out at the bars in Addison. (okay, nobody will get that, but trust me, it's fucking genius!) I do like the new badge, although I wish they'd stuck with the horse instead of the cow with the wierd forehead firemark. Plus, all my Burn merch will now be retro. Bonus. Actually, Chicago Fire is one of the few MLS names I like I always thought it strange to name a team after one of the more interesting and damaging pieces of your city's history, but it is aestheticly pleasing. I wish the 'Quakes would go back to the Clash though. That was a much cooler name (did they get sued by Stummer and co. over that or am I misremembering?)

I don't like FC Dallas. It just seems grammatically wrong. Unless you're in oneadem Germanic countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc.). There's lotsa Premiership-sounding team names that woulda been cool like ... (btw, none of the EPL -- or even lower -- teams actually uses the FC upfront, even if it's part of the full official name) Dallas Athletic Dallas City Dallas Hotspurs (yeah, Fooker, I agree, that one actually makes more sense in this context to me than Tottenham Hotspurs) Dallas Rovers Dallas United Dallas Wanderers (makes me think of Dallas Paladins: Paladin, Paladin, where do you roam, Paladin, Paladin, far far from home ...!) or even something non-localized, like Crystal Palace or ... Asphalt Landscape!

Another of the MLSnet articles mentioned a rumor that the new Utah franchise will announce its name as Real Salt Lake City, wouldn't that be cute?

You're kidding, right bill?

Tino Place's column has the mention, search on 'salt' to jump right to the paragraph. I love to kid, especially you SF, but I'm not the one doing the kidding here.

why not go the extra yard and change soccer to football, then we'll have MLF (MiLF) instead of MLS.

MLS teams ought to adopt more traditions of their international counterparts, like relegation and the way they aggressively cultivate a fan following on the Web and with supporters-only programs (example). And what the hell does QPR have to do with the Premiership? FC Dallas? I suupose in America the 'F' has to stand for 'Futbol'. I like it myself, but I can't see the average WASPy texan standing for it. The badge is pretty good, but as has been said, it's just a shame that it's already been done. I seriously hope Salt Lake aren't thinking about "Real Salt Lake". I mean, they do know that "Real" is just Spanish for "Royal", don't they? The Salt Lake Stormin' Mormons. You know it makes sense.

And what the hell does QPR have to do with the Premiership? One more promotion.
