Sports Bio

I'm definitely a die-hard University of Illinois Fighting Illini fan, in both football and basketball. In 1997 I had football season tickets when they went 0-11 and in 2001 was rewarded with a 10-2 season, going undefeated at home. I was 9 when we reached the final four in 1989.

I am also a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan. When I arrived in the U.S. in 1987, the Cardinals were in the World Series against the Twins, and I became a fan ever since. I have some very fond memories of warm summer nights in my room with the radio tuned into Cardinals baseball.

I have been to a couple of sporting events I find hard to forget. In September 2001 I attended the F1 race at Indy. I saw Ralf Schumacher ride a scooter right past me and a friend of mine almost tripped him up. The sounds and sensations of a F1 car braking from >150 MPH down to second gear was quite a rush.

"The most dramatic turnaround in NCAA history" culminated in a national championship yesterday as Craig Tiley coached the University of Illinois men's tennis team to the NCAA Championship over Vanderbilt. Even more amazing is the fact that they won it without a single foreign player on the roster,

"You will never see a more dramatic conclusion to any motor race... let alone a grand prix, and the result of it all is that, in the most harum scarum way possible - he doesn't make it easy for himself, does he? - Lewis Hamilton is the world champion." (Video here for the moment.)

Well, remember that FIA gifted Massa 7 points (6 at Spa, the other 1 in his incident with Bourdais), so Hamilton would've wrapped up the championship in China with his win there.

US MEN Win Curling Bronze 8-6 over Britain on the last shot in the 10th end for the first time in olympic history and the first in major compitition since 1978. Curling will be a sport on the rise in the future although it wont be anything like it is in Canada where it is second behind hockey. GO USA!!!

On a related note, Canada won gold for the first time later that same day, thanks to the take-out heard around the world, yet you don't see any Canuck screaming GO CANADA!! on the front page. Weird. Well that's because they're *Canadians*, not to mention that isn't it pretty much a disappointment if the Canadians get anything less than the gold in curling? But man that triple takeout in the gold medal game by the Canadians was a thing of beauty.

Ricky Williams Tests Positive for Fourth Time Shocker!

Well, maybe not, chicobangs. As I understand it, at most (if not all) schools, the athletic department is a separate entity with it's own budget that comes from donations, ticket sales, TV revenue and such. Especially at UT, with its popular football program, it's probably earning more than enough money for the department to stay in the black and not need any additional money from the school itself to fund scholarships and other expenses.

U.S. Hopes for Skeleton Gold Recede Human bullet Zach Lund, the No. 1 ranked men's skeleton competitor in the world, has been suspended for taking the anti-baldness drug Propecia, which is a banned substance that can be taken to mask steroids.

Does steroids actually help in Skeleton? I know you need power for the start, but isn't the rest more about fine motor skills, fast reaction times, and smooth lines down the course?

Just Another Halloween in Detroit? No, actually a dis from the Sacramento Kings to the Detroit Pistons, their fans, and city. Ron Artest had no comment.

Anyone else see the irony in the Sacramento Kings insulting another city?

EARNHARDT INTO THE INTERNATIONAL MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME We are pleased to announce that we will induct Dale Earnhardt, Harry Gant, Janet Guthrie, Jack Roush and Humpy Wheeler next April 27th. Earnhardt, of course, is the seven-time Winston Cup champion and Gant is one of the all-time greats in both Cup and Busch racing. Guthrie is the first female to race in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. Roush’s race teams have won titles in drag racing, sports cars, Craftsman trucks, Busch Series and Nextel Cup Series. Wheeler is the long-time innovative promoter at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte.

Why is this Hall of Fame in freakin' Alabama? Indianapolis or Le Mans would seem more appropriate.

Tigress Wie. Michelle Wie will announce her entry into pro golf tomorrow in Hawaii. According to an NPR report last night, she'll be the richest woman golfer (hello Annika), and third richest woman athlete (behind Serena Williams and that Russian tennis player erm I forgot her name), based on a possible $13million per year in contracts w/ companies such as Nike, Sony and Casio. All this without the a single major win. Will she turn into the Anna K of golf? btw, Tiger Woods approves.

What the world of sports needs is a male sports also-ran who's a pointless dilettante, but very good looking. Then every time you homers start talking about Barry Bonds or Tom Brady or Roger Federer, I can say, "Yeah, but [blank] is better-looking." Jason Sehorn?

Netball Under 21 World Cup is in Florida this month! Last Friday I went to the farewell ceremony for the Samoa team (ranked 4th in the World). According to this site, interest in netball is now at 'fever pitch' in the USA. Is this tournament really registering on the sports psyche of America?

posted by owlhouse at 08:13 PM on July 19

I always had assumed that netball was just another name for handball. I guess not. I've never seen netball played anywhere and never even know such a game existed.

posted by graymatters at 03:11 PM on July 18

I don't think Danica needs to be moving over just because another woman won a race in a support race. If she had won in the Champ Car Series that would be a different story. Until she wins in the premier series, it doesn't mean much. Danica Patrick: 0 wins in 2 seasons of Toyota Atlantics Katherine Legge: 2 wins in less than 1 season of Toyota Atlantics
