I caught HNIC's Wittman retrospective a few weeks back and hadn't looked into it. They were toasting his retirement, I thought they were mourning his loss. But I guess the terminal cancer that caused him to retire has claimed him today. Sad. His voice is one of the voices from my generation of Canadian sportswatching. The Olympics and the Grey Cup won't quite be the same.

Terrell Owens came to his quarterback's defense, even crying behind dark sunglasses with a quivering bottom lip while declaring, "You can point the finger at him, you can talk about the vacation (with Simpson), and if you do that, it's really unfair. That's my teammate. ... We lost as a team."I had to check the URL. I thought I was reading The Onion.

I think the only explanation to put Beckham at #1 is to allow their readers (the target audience of the paper, not the internet) to actually get to the end of the list and have a specific memory of the "injury" in question rather than read about something they've probably never heard of (Malarchuk). But Malarchuk was the first thing that came to my mind so good thing he was on there.

What's he doing having the surgery in Vancouver? I would think that with the money he and the Blazers have that he'd have access to the best care the U S of A has to offer rather than having to go to Canada and their socialized medicine (though likely it was a private clinic of some sort, no queues jumped).

A big sponsor has to look at the field "four of the top 20 on the money list, and 10 of the top 50" and wonder if it is worth the commitment. A bit sad, seeing it is the oldest event on the tour that isn't the US or British Open (second oldest if you want to say that the BMW Championship is still the Western Open). There always seems to be some Canadian golf press musing/grousing (ok, Lorne Rubenstein) when the schedule is released noting how the event is either too late in the season or plunked in an inconvenient spot - ie right after the British Open).

Nice goal but that goalie - why was he going down? Wheeler was making a desperation swipe at the puck from a bad angle. He wasn't picking a spot. I guess it is just instinct to drop into the butterfly when the puck is headed netward.

It was a first rounder but SJ had two on hand having picked one up from NJ earlier. So, even after the trade, the Sharks still have a first rounder which maybe meant that Montreal could ask for and get a first rounder for Rivet.

I'd hate to see Sundin traded (unless it is a Recchi type rental and resign situation). He's 2 goals from the franchise goal scoring record. I gotta hand it to Atlanta, this is kind of a make or break season for them, gotta make the playoffs, looked to be in good shape but have really slid. At least they are doing something about it. I'd back them, for franchise stability sake, to at least make the playoffs but at this point that looks like they'd be competing with Toronto or Montreal for the last couple of spots (unless the Thrashers can win their division) and if the Leafs and Habs are out i'll be unhappy. I won't be backing the Sens.

Some amusing content there, to be sure. Unfortunately, for the pedants, an unsourced or unreferenced quote on the internet is not always easy to believe (and attribution becomes "fact" by mere repetition). It was bad luck... though he could have scored without taking the puck all the way in... but he did say he took it all the way in because he was worried about the bad ice. But.... I don't think he helped matters by poking the puck back up ice after he went behind the goal line. Highly amusing.

As for Crosby, sorry to inform you of this shocking news bulletin, but he isn't as revered in the States as he is in Canada. Anybody (ie everybody that has posted in this thread so far) with a knowledge of the piss poor TV deal the NHL has in the States knows that. But, to use a cliche, he has the most upside for making a break onto the national stage. I mean, ummm, cover of GQ before* he'd ever played in the NHL? * I mean it was on newsstands after his debut, but the magazine business works with long lead times...

Yeah, I think the replay suggests that you'd have to call that a goal as the rules cited by DJE outline. re: When does a pro sports league not follow its own rules? Recall a significant EPL example when a memorably and comically obvious goal late in a 2005 Tottenham - Man United game denies Spurs the goal that would have made it 1-0 with only minutes to play. Potentially they then missed out on an extra two points in the standings (though they finished three points back of the 7th place finisher, which earned a UEFA Cup place).

yeah, cutting and pasting the entirety of the only original text in the linked article goes a bit far, and is lazy.... The only thing I don't like about triple doubles is that it is seen as an achievement, but it is just a number and Jason Kidd is a career 0.402 shooter. So I am sure in lots of those triple doubles his shooting has been cold and would have been seen as a bad performance. Still, a pretty good achievement, he's in good company.

Why can't a pro adjust. 90% of his kicks was to the right. The end of the article points out that he is the most accurate kicker in NFL history. I think he must know what he is doing but has hit a bad patch. He just has to make his next 16 kicks in a row to get back up to 85% and earn that bonus in his contract. I guess it's over for him though.

If he said those things and won the game that'd be one thing. But he lost and was visibly frustrated during the loss (getting in Damon Allen's face at one point) One call that turned the tide (or stifled the comeback) was the Ricky Williams fumble that was called on instant replay. I can see the Argos being upset about that one, I mean the fumble wasn't called but was conclusive on replay but the play was whistled dead while the ball was loose (though the Alouettes player did quickly pick it up and no Argos player would have had a chance). So it was sort of a broken and botched play. Dunno the rules but I guess the Argos would have been entitled to feel that the evidence and the way the play went down wasn't enough to result in a change of posession. Also, how can you not like Pinball? He's suggesting the refs didn't like Pinball? Are the refs human? Are they Canadian? Do they follow Canadian football? If you answered yes to all of those things then you gotta like Pinball. I beat Pinball doesn't even swear.

Very cool. I mean, the NHL really has to pursue different ways to reaching their audience that the other major North American sports just don't have to do. (FWIW NBA arena attendance last year was 21,595,804, the NHL was 20,854,169) So this is great news. Don't know how much I'd partake, but I've always been more pleased with the NHL's highlights packages on their website than what you can get on the MLB or NBA sites (be it awkward formatting or the need to pay for access I don't recall what it is I don't like about highlights on MLB or NBA website, or whether it has changed, but earlier experiences just encouraged me to not bother). This is another step in the right direction. You know, because truly last week's game (let alone yesterday's, to a lesser extent) it just a product with a very limited audience. Long tail and all that.

There have been countless walk-off homeruns in big games, this article is about the 4 homers in a row.... No duh. I was mentioning a perhaps equally pivotal moment in Dodgers history that also involved game ending dramatics. How many times in the last 40 years has a team clinched a penant on the second last day of the season by scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the ninth? Surely the same amount that hit 4 HRS back to back. I dunno, I saw a parallel. It's the first thing I thought of. It's the Dodgers after all. That might have been their most recent previous memorable game for the ages. And I'm supporting the Dodgers here. It might not amount for much, but I have only ever bought two baseball caps in my life and they were both Dodgers caps. Meh.

Sounds like a great game. Immediately I was reminded of Finley's walk-off home run to cap a 7 run 9th inning rally that clinched the 2004 NL West title and eliminated the Giants. Somehow that article nor the NYT recap made mention of that. Isn't that an obvious parallel? Or is it too much to mention the Finley homer given that that one put them into the post season where as this one only put them in first with a couple of weeks left?

The revenue generated by the Premeriship was quoted as £1.3 billion in the 03/04 season. ($2.44 billion USD with today's rate). The NHL grossed $2.1 billion USD the year before the lockout. So, while it is like comparing rashers to streaky bacon, the total revenues are in about the same ballpark (with fewer teams and games played in the Premiership, of course, and the teams making the big expenditures on the transfer market having European football as a further revenue stream). Which is what the clubs getting their players yoinked for $200k must be thinking.

Ah yes, Montreal, I recall Kovalev taking a slash in a pivotal game of the playoffs and he clutched his arm in fake agony, turned the puck over, and the OT goal scored. But Ribeiro might also be an acceptable answer (game 3 of that same series - 2004 vs the Bruins - Habs win in 7 after being down 3-1, Thornton admits to being injured after the fact).

I have long hoped to see Malkin in the NHL. Too bad there has to be some bureaucratic cloak and dagger type stuff to accompany his move. But when the pucks drops (or the fantasy drafts kick off) then woo + hoo! I think the second biggest thing for me in this story might be the question - when did North American papers start using "fortnight"? I must admit that is new to me for things on this side of the pond.
