Sports Bio

Who the Heck is Trox?

I've lived in Atlanta for 13 years. Like long walks on the beach, and am a people person. Well at least the part about Atlanta is true. I work as a web content strategist, mostly as a consultant, so I guess the Internet is really my line of work. I'm passionate about football (soccer) and baseball when it comes to sports. Like everyone else, I have a blog but that's mostly been on hiatus lately due to an extreme backlog at work.

As for my nickname, it's a corruption and shortening of my last name that I picked up as a nickname in college.

SportsFilter History
I joined spofi on February 12, 2002, after following a link here from Metafilter. What really got me going here was the hubbub of activity surrounding the 2002 World Cup. Now Spofi has become an integral part of my day, even if I don't have the time to post or respond to posts as much as I'd like. I do appreciate the perspective of other members a lot though.

Spofi Honors
Winner: 2007 - 2008 Fantasy UEFA Champion's League
Winner: 2006 College Football Pick 'Em
3rd Place: 2006 Tournament Pick 'Em

Memorable Sporting Events

The most memorable sporting events I've attended would have to start with my first baseball game (Baltimore vs. Boston)--talk about sealing a lifelong addiction. Probably the most memorable game I've ever attended though has to be game 6 of the 1995 World Series. Not only did the Braves finally bring one home, but it was just a heck of a game. Finally, even though I didn't attend it in person, I have to mention the US defeat of Portugal in the 2002 world cup. I spent two hour wondering if I was still asleep, and it took many phone calls with friends to convince me that what I was witnessing was really happening.

My Teams:

There's really not much consistency here. Since I grew up outside of a major market, most of the teams I pull for have very little relation to where I grew up (western Virginia). I follow the following sports in roughly the following order (though the Red Sox and Arsenal are pretty close in my mind).

Baseball: I've also been a Boston Red Sox fan since I was old enough to pick up a baseball bat (and still mostly live and die by them each year), but I began following the Atlanta Braves when Dale Murphy was winning MVPs, and since I live in Atlanta, I see them live far more often than the Red Sox.

Football (Association): When it comes to football, my true love would be that other football. Thanks to a trip to Highbury as my love of the sport was growing, I support Arsenal in the EPL. If I had to pick, DC United would be my favorite MLS team, along with St. Pauli in Germany as a third choice. To support a team, I need to have visited it.

Basketball : UNC Tar Heels (since Phil Ford and company). I don't really have an NBA team. I suppose I'd pull for the Hawks, but they are the second best basketball team in Atlanta, behind Georgia Tech.

Football (Gridiron): I remain more loyal to my boyhood home when it comes to American Football. I pull for Virginia Tech and the Washington Redskins. (I must admit that I've recently began to hop on the Falcons bandwagon since I now live in Atlanta, but they rarely impact the Redskins.)

Hockey: I'm rather new to Hockey, but the passion of the fans on Spofi have inspired me to begin paying more attention. Go Thrashers!

Beckham makes it official. He'll move from Real Madrid to the LA Galaxy this summer. What impact will this have on MLS and the state of the game in America? Can Becks conquer even a disinterested America?

Cricket almost derails a wedding. A good read about suddenly and inexplicably falling in love with the game. Even the video of Harold Reynolds breaking down the differences between cricket and baseball swings is entertaining. What's up with the Ashes again?

Donovan's coming home again Well, so much for trying to succeed in a European league. What does this mean for the most visible face in American soccer. A coming elevation of MLS, or the silly pouting of a mama's boy.

The Decline of Commentary in cricket, but probably applicable to all broadcast sports. Osman Samiuddin takes ex-players to task. A well-considered rant.

I'd like to point out the exception that proves the rule: Al Leiter. A truly insightful baseball commentator. Too bad they only dust him off for the playoffs.

And I say this as someone who rooted against Mr. Leiter for much of his career for what it's worth.

16 nations vie for Euro 2008 title beginning June 7. Czech Republic, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Greece, Russia, Spain, Spain, Sweden. Who's your pick to win it? Who will be the surprise team? Where can we watch live in the US for free at home (or can we)? Get the ball rolling inside.

You think Reina will see any minutes at all with Casillas ahead of him? But seriously, with Cesc pulling the strings, I'd have to say Spain are my tip to win the tournament as well.

Mark Hughes is new Manchester City manager. The former Manchester United star and Blackburn Rovers manager takes over from Sven-Goran Eriksson. The article also mentions that Hughes was non-committal on the impending purchases of Brazilians Ronaldinho and Jo. The next Manchester derby should be a rousing affair, with Hughes going up against old boss Alex Ferguson. Meanwhile, with Hughes' move, Chelsea loses yet another candidate to replace the departed Avram Grant. And Blackburn appear to be in no hurry to fill Hughes' spot, with candidates such as Sam Allardyce (late of Newcastle and Bolton) lined up.

I can't say I understand what Hughes is thinking with this move. He was the favorite to take over ManU after Ferguson's retirement, which this move will effectively blunt.

Mourinho to Inter Milan, targets Chelsea trio. The Special One lands at Inter, and speculation is he will go after Essien, Drogba and Lampard.

posted to Soccer at 12:52 PM CDT

Or not.

Comment icon posted at 1:26 PM CDT on June 3

In all seriousness, I fully expect at least one (if not two) of those names to be going to Inter, and I'd even add Carvalho to the list of possibilities. Drogba probably is the most likely: he's been unhappy on and off all season, and his lack of judgment in the CL final won't endure him to many of their fans. Selfishly, I hope Essien stays, just so I'll get to see him play more often.

Manchester City qualify for UEFA Cup based on good behavior. They almost lost the spot to Fulham, who barely escaped relegation from the EPL. "The fair play system awards points based on criteria including respect for opponents and the referee, positive play as well as the number of yellow and red cards received. City will not be able to host the first qualifying round tie at Eastlands as the pitch is due to be relaid once a Bon Jovi concert has taken place on 22 June."

And it's not like they'll progress very far anyway.

Manchester United Complete Double The Champions League final was won on a sloppy rain-soaked pitch in Moscow when Manchester United held off 10-man Chelsea on (gag) penalties after John Terry slips taking decisive attempt.

posted to Soccer at 9:20 PM CDT

As a hater of both teams, I enjoyed this match, if only because of Drogba's sending off (how to you lose your head like that), Ronaldo's PK miss (it's about time that classless run, stop, kick thing bit him in the ass), and Terry's bottling it at the last (nothing witty to say, just never really liked the guy). Schadenfreud? Yes. Entertaining. Also yes. But seriously, I'm just glad both teams pretty much went for it rather than setting up their buses in front of the goal.

Terry still gets his cheap shots in on the pitch as well, but unlike Drogba, he's smart enough to keep his hands below the chest.

Mike Piazza decides to retire after 16 seasons Piazza; hanging up the cleats, binning the bats, mothballing the mitt.

I too always envision Piazza in a Dodgers cap, but that may just be me remembering his "I'm stealing home, and somewhere in Philadelphia my grandmother faints" commercial.

Is the Kentucky Derby a problem in racing? Frank Deford counts all the ways the signature event in American horse racing is screwed up.

posted to Other at 11:11 PM CDT

I've never put much stock in horse racing, but the opportunity to go the Derby dropped in my lap, so I'll be enjoying whatever may come (save torrential downpours of course). So, regardless of Deford's views (and they may be valid, I have no idea), I plan on enjoying some delicious mint juleps in Kentucky, and If I'm lucky I may see a horse race break out! (If anyone else is going to the derby, drop me a line.)

"This fella, Ronaldo, he's a cod" RTE's TV pundits show they really don't like Cristiano Ronaldo (via). Why does he seem to polarise opinion in a way that other players don't?

posted to Soccer at 3:44 AM CDT

I too detest the diving from Ronaldo and Drogba. The funny thing is during the last Euro Championships, I gained a lot of respect for Ronaldo for his play in the competition. Of course, watching him at ManU afterwards (and his antics in the World Cup as well), that respect dissipated rather quickly.

Which brings me to a questions, why do some players look so different when they play for their country. Essien in another great example of this. I've never been a fan of his enforcer-like tactics for Chelsea (the occasional great goal aside). However, I was absolutely blown away by his performances at the world cup (and by all accounts, his ANC performance was similar for Ghana). Does this all come down to the manager?

Iron City Blues To protest more than a decade of ownership mismanagement, they launched a Web site, IrateFans.com, and organized a "Fans for Change" walkout after the third inning of a home game. Unfortunately, only a few hundred fans who left their seats actually left the game; most just got up to get beer.

After 15 years, we Bucs fans aren't asking for miracles. We just want what came so easily to the pre-2004 Red Sox, the post-1908 Cubs, and the other great losing teams of all time: sympathy.

I may be (legitimately) tarred as an Arod hater from my past remarks, but I'll keep that on the field. Genuinely classy move by him here though.

NCAA tourney is the best, but it could be even better. The NCAA tournament is the best three-plus weeks of hoops, maybe of anything, on the planet. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. It isn't.

posted to Basketball at 10:55 AM CDT

A couple of years ago, I heard Lefty Driesell (former Maryland, JMU, and Ga St. coach) on local sports talk radio advocating expanding the tournament to all Division one teams in the country. It sounded crazy, but the way he sketched it out would have only added two additional rounds. I believe there were some byes for the higher seeded teams or something. I'm too busy to google for the details, but it ought to be considered in any conversation that mentions expanding the field.
