Sports Bio

I follow the teams from Dallas-Fort Worth because I grew up with them, but I've adopted the Jacksonville Jaguars, the only pro team my new hometown is ever likely to get. The most memorable sporting event I attended live was game 6 of the NBA Western Conference finals in 1988 at Reunion Arena -- Mavericks vs. Lakers -- when Mark Aguirre and his prodigious caboose received half the game MVP award, and the 17,007 fans in attendance received the other half. I also follow U.S. Soccer, Sheffield Wednesday and Orlando City SC because members of this site dragged me into the beautiful game for the first time since the Dallas Tornado folded.

He Who Controls the Ice Controls the Universe: The Dallas Stars have used a monopoly on ice rinks in North Texas to take control of youth and recreational hockey, crush dissent by players and coaches and wring out ever-increasing profits from what used to be a community good. Some of their execs carried out a hotel kickback scheme for themselves. How far are they taking this insanity? When one dad explored coaching for an independent rink instead, a Stars official banned his daughters from all of their rinks. The girls are 5 and 7.

Pitcher Switches Teams in Middle of Doubleheader: Seranthony Domínguez was just traded to the other team during a doubleheader. "After the first game, I was in there with the guys, and they call me and they tell me, 'Hey we got you traded. Go to the next dugout,'" Domínguez said. After being traded he pitched an inning for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Baltimore Orioles, who swapped him for minor league pitcher Juaron Watts-Brown. This happened once before in 1922.

CFL Pickem Week 6: Not Really Week 6 Edition: Our Canadian Football League contest returns for the Friday night clash between 4-1 Calgary and 3-1 Winnipeg. Pick that game and the two to come during the weekend. No one got any points in the last round that we picked, which is kind of amazing.

Stratospheric Skydiver Felix Baumgartner Dies in Paraglider Crash: Felix Baumgartner, who in 2012 became the first human to break the sound barrier with only his body, skydiving from 24 miles over New Mexico and achieving a descent speed of 843.6 mph, died Thursday in a paraglider crash off the coast of Italy. He was 56.

He Who Controls the Ice Controls the Universe

This is one of the craziest things an American sports franchise has ever done. They started out with the understandable goal of helping a youth hockey infrastructure grow in a place that didn't offer much. Then they embraced every cutthroat and greedy tactic of the travel team/advanced youth sports racket. It is way out of hand.

It also is alienating a lot of parents and players who should be prime Stars fan base potential. Dumb on all levels.

UNC sees cricket as the next big thing

I've successfully avoided learning anything about cricket because I know I'll devote as much time to it as I did the Premier League when I began watching in 2006 on Fox Soccer. That first decade was glorious. I learned so much but still can't tell when a handball is a ball to hand.

Dallas/Fort Worth has Major League Cricket in Grand Prairie and something proposed for Allen. I might have to check it out if I'm visiting family at the right time to see matches.

Ryne Sandberg dies at 65

Ryno was one of the greats. It was a shame that only his final season had interleague play.

His game would be well-suited to today's MLB. He had 32-54 steals his first six seasons in Chicago.

CFL Pickem Week 7: Garney Hensley Edition

You missed game 3, Tommybiden. Or something went awry on the form.

CFL Pickem Week 7: Garney Hensley Edition

My picks:

Stampeders by 8
Roughriders by 14 (lock)
Blue Bombers by 10 (lock)
Lions by 3

My CFL expertise is a work in progress. I spent an embarrassing amount of time on a 4 a.m. thought exercise wondering why Vancouver doesn't have a team when it's such a big city. In lieu of apology I am picking B.C. this week.

SportsFilter: The Thursday Huddle

The new Packers president is Ed Policy, which sounds like a name any organization could count on for informed leadership. I haven't been this jealous over an advantageous surname since I met Java book author Peter Coffee.

Ex-NHL enforcer breaks silence on viral golf course beatdown: 'This might be a blast'

This is amazing. Tarnasky could've been a lot rougher on the drunk who kept charging him without even trying to throw a punch.
