Herman Edwards is going to Kansas City after all: : The Chiefs are dotting i's and crossing t's on a contract that would replace the recently retired Dick Vermeil with one of his former defensive proteges, who has suddenly become unwelcome in North Jersey.

And the next stage of the NFL Coaching Musical Chairs begins.

It's not a done deal, but the extended dance between Edwards & the Chiefs has apparently chafed at the Jets to the point where the relationship is irreparable.

Too bad. I really like Herman Edwards, and wish him the success he almost-but-never-really had in NY.

I like the last paragraph:

Among the potential candidates to replace Edwards, if he does depart, is former New Orleans coach Jim Haslett, dismissed earlier this week. But a Jets official told ESPN.com that, while there is some interest in Haslett, most of the dialogue has been initiated by his agent. And the official conceded that hiring a coach who had a worse record in 2005 than Edwards would be a difficult sell to Jets fans.

No kidding.

Sorry to burst your bubble chicobangs, local sports radio here in Michigan saying Millen and Haslett are in heated discussion but then again we are talking Millen here, he couldn't hire the right coach 2 times in a row..... You are right on the money about Herm Edwards, Real Class act in the Tony Dungee Mold. KC is gonna get a real winner.

Oh, even as a Jets fan with a soft spot for the Saints, I think Haslett would be a horrible hire here.

Frankly, I don't think any of the recently jobless head coaches would be a proper fit. If the Jets get one of those two big QBs in the draft, and they hire a decent Defensive Coordinator from somewhere else to head the team and give the offensive reins to someone dedicated who knows what they're doing, they could rebound quickly.

Also, if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a bicycle. Lot of ifs in that last paragraph. I know.

Edwards still has never proven anything as a coach. And while we're at it, what is all the fascination with Jim Haslett? Edwards is like Tom Landry compared to Haslett. Not taking last season into account with the Saints (for obvious reasons), Haslett has always underachieved with the team. A few seasons he lost such control of the team when they looked as if they were possibly going somewhere that they ended up being a laughing stock by season's end. I guess some people are still fooled by his hard-ass, tough-guy demeanor.

1. Detroit got rid of the wrong guy, Millen should have been fired. 2. Haslett would be a moron to take that job with Millen as his boss. 3. No matter who is there, the Bears are going to be the top team in that division for the foreseeable future. 4. Herman Edwards didn't win with NY and he won't win in KC.

While he wouldn't be the person for the Jets (or a professional team) just yet, everything I've read about Doug Flutie since his drop kick last week is leading me to think that he would make a very exciting coach somewhere. How often do players cross over to coaching positions?

Many former players who were coaches have been mentioned right in this thread. Tony Dungee played for the Steelers in the 1970s, Herm Edwards (1975-1986) played for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Jim Haslett played with the Bills and the Jets. That is probably why he will be considered for the coaching position.

Another that come to mind off the top of my head is Bill Cower, who played with Cleveland (linebacker and special teams).

I assume there must be plenty more current and past coaches who played in the NFL, but I gotta run.

NY should hire Mariucci, good fit

Newsflash to the whole entire world: Mariucci is not that good of a coach. He had a damn good team in San Francisco, which was the only reason why he won. Once the team starting losing some good players, Mariucci couldn't do shit. Then, as you all know, he went to the Lions. His lack of discipline and his inability to motivate the players made the Lions a disappointment. Plus, if any other reason is needed, he has been hired by Matt Millen so you know he can't be that good.

Turner could get the gig. Martz is getting the Saints gig and Haslett the Lions. This is good for Herm and the Chiefs. They'll probably get a ring. Turner and Jets probably will not. I expect to see Herm at the parade when the Kansas City Penguins are about to begin play.

I think Edwards will be a good fit in KC. He has a good team to work with and GM with some brains. He is a good coach and KC is a great football town. I hope they seal up the deal.

As a Pat's Fan I'm glad to see Edwards go

I would think, as a Pats fan, you'd be happy to see him stay, since the Jets have consistently underperformed under Herm, for a variety of reasons that may or may not relate directly to his ability as a coach. With him leading one of your division's main rivals, you've managed to win four of the last five division championships. With enemies like Herm, who needs friends?

Although I would love to see the Dolphins whoop up on a predictable, lifeless Norv-led Jets team twice a year.

Martz is one really foolish man, but he more than half a brain, and I doubt that he'll take the job. Dom Capers probably will, he's got less than half a brain. That fits with him. Then, Boogie Benson, Dom Capers, and Matt Leinart will take the I-10 West towards Los Angeles. They'll exit the freeway at Exposition Park (L.A. Memorial Coliseum). They're all crazy but I'll love 'em all.

I think he's bound for the CFL first as a coach. That's where he made his name in the game, and he knows the type of offence (exciting) it takes to win in the CFL.

The last 3 Jet coaches were "tough guys" (Tuna, Groh, Herm) who saw the tough future with the team they had. Like they say "When the going gets tough, the tough get going".We liked Herm; but, he just didn't like the situation he was in. I believe it effected the team this year. So.. goodbye Herm. Don't let the door hit your backside.

Herm Edwards is a terrific motivator. And an awful game day coach from what I've seen (admittedly this is biased because I've only really seen him against the Pats and they've been pretty decent during Herm's run). And that makes him orders of magnitude better than Jim Haslett, the one man who remembers Hurricaine Katrina fondly.

The last three Jets coaches have quit, 4 if you count Belichek. I see a trend developing. How about Larry Brown for the Jets? I don't think professional sports will ever work in New Orleans. They call it the Big Easy for a reason. It hot, real hot, laid back and there are so many fun things to eat, drink, see and touch! That was the whole reason for being there, Maybe post-Katrina will be different. I hope not.

1. Edwards has a long history with the KC GM, which is the reason I read for choosing him over Saunders. Why the Jets would accept only a 4th round pick as compensation is beyond me, though.

2. Joe88, is there a forward-looking football thread any of us could post to this site in which you would, for one freaking time already, refrain from commenting that the Saints (generally, or an expansion franchise otherwise) will pack up and move to Los Angeles? Seriously, we get your point and please leave it alone already.

I'm a Chiefs fan and the defense has sucked during the Vermeil era. Vermeil was too loyal to certain players who should have not started and been benched for lack of talent. He was also offensive minded and that never got us anywhere really. Yeah some really nice shootouts with the Colts...etc and 1 playoff appearance in 5 years. One of the reasons Saunders didn't get the job is because we needed a defensive minded coach to help Gunther out (if Herm decides to keep him.)Tweak the defense a little and leave Saunders and the offense alone. I just hope that Saunders stays.
