I don't really put much stock in this at all. It kind of seems like the usual "nothings going on, so lets overblow something to make a story" story. On top of that, it's Manny. He wanted to play for the Yankees, he did want to be traded, he pleaded to stay, he loves Boston, blah blah blah. After a while, this Manny stuff fails to phase you. And besides that, it doesn't make sense. I can't see a guy who is irritated over lack of privacy doing commercials, talking to the media, or doing photospreads with his family in local Boston Sunday Globe Magazines. If you're irritated with privacy, you don't do this. You don't pose for photos in your home with your toddler son and wife. He's got 3 years left on an 8 year contract and has said he wants to retire after this is all done.

If they trade him, the receiving team will require the Sox to pick up a large chunk of his salary, which will not happen. The "Manny being Manny" cliche is old and tired. Well, my (cheeky) point was that while that little experiment worked a year ago because of his hefty contract and sometime struggles. Now he'd be picked up in a heartbeat and a least a few teams wouldn't care about the Sox picking up any of his contract because it's length is now 30% shorter (3 years left). I bet the Nationals, Dodgers, Mets, Mariners (maybe), and Cubs would be happy to take advantage of that situation.
The simple fact is he was put there once and nothing was done. That was two years and ~40m dollars ago. He's owed 57m now with his 3 years left. Not chump change in the least, but much more palpable than 5 years ~97m.
That's still ~20m/yr. It would put all of those teams, except WASH, over 100m and the Mets/Dodgers would be into the luxury tax. Picking up that contract is dicey to say the least. As far as Manny, he's my guy, he can't do wrong... Pedro was the same way. But without Manny that team changes in a way I can't imagine (that's the homer in me). To steal a recent analogy... After watching Manny blow play after play, and then having to forgive him because of his bat. Just to have him turn around and do someting like this to the team and the fans. This is the biggest reason I am glad he isn't here in Cleveland anymore

He won't add to his rbi total today, since his request for a day off was granted. While I used to love the guy's carefree attitude, if you watched last night's game, it typifies the year this team is having. They give away games they should win. That's fine if you are overmatched, but the Sox are anything but. Watching him lumber down the first baseline was infuriating. Damon gets all the credit for that win. It's just sad that his season is basically an audition for the highest bidder come Fall. Something has gotta give. And my ranting here is more out of frustration than common sense. I truly don't believe they will put him on waivers, but I need somewhere to vent, right? Maybe I'll put him on waivers on my fantasy team. Baby steps, baby steps......
last night is not the first time manny has lumbered to first!! he has done that since he has been in the league, but it has always been excused by his ability to produce runs. The real problem here is the fact that another team and city full of fans have to be affected by another 20 mill/yr PRO whining that he wants his privacy. He should have thought about that before signing all of those contracts, and deciding to play PRO baseball that is televised, and advertised, and not private. The teams should fine these players heavily for not trying during games, maybe that would solve some of the problems. Probably not for Manny, he is a dumb as a turnip

Hey jojo, I'm glad Manny isn't in Cleveland also...I was especially happy he wasn't there last year, when he was helping my beloved Sox win a World Series. I'm also happy he's not there this year, as he's part of a good team that has a pretty fair chance of repeating. Sure, Manny's a flake. Look at any major league baseball team...hell, any professional sports team at all, and you'll find more flakes than a bowl of Wheaties. At least he's not Kenny Rogers. And he produces.

In any job, it's better/safer to say "I'm glad I left" after the fact rather than "I can't wait to go" before.
