Sports highlight reel in crack cocaine form: A barrage of 20th century clips from predominantly N.A. sports. I was tired after watching... (20Mb wmv file).

I remember this!!!! It was on ESPN's Sportscenter on December 31, 1999, right before the ball dropped in Times Square to bring in 2000! I happened to catch it on the replay the next morning, and I always wished I'd have taped that piece! It's done to my favorite Aerosmith songs of all time, too! Thanks for posting this!!!

Wow. It captures the range of emotions better than any sports video I've seen. Was anyone else trying to name the faces as they came on? "Jack Johnson, Frank Robinson, dunno, ..."

Holy cow. I mean, really...holy cow. Thank you VERY much for posting a link to this. I wish I could find a high-quality VCR/DVD version to keep. The good, the bad, the highlights, the lowlights...I especially like how they spent extra time focusing on the BIG names (Ruth, Jordan, Ali, Gretzky) and had nice tributes to those that have passed-on. Was anyone else trying to name the faces as they came on? I did. Afterwards, I tried to think of any North American sports stars that DIDN'T appear in the video. The only ones I could come up with are Shaq and Kobe, but given the time this was broadcast (1999), they probably weren't deserving of being in the video at that point.

Well, yeah, it's about what ESPN would produce. One one-second clip of a winter sport other than ice hockey (Hermann Maier's crash at Nagano, quelle surprise), I think I counted six women in the whole thing (Cooper, Chastain, a couple of gymnasts who we'll call "women" by courtesy, one tennis player, and somebody from the Vols, probably on the occasion of yet another drubbing by UConn)...but I suppose anybody but the NBA, NFL and MLB is lucky to get in there at all. And, of course, Muhammad Ali. It didn't altogether suck; I just wish ESPN would show more of the sports world, and if they're going to delve into history, that they'd show a more balanced view of that, too.

Actually...I don't remember seeing Buster Douglas knocking out Tyson in that clip. That probably should have been in there...

They can only show what they have available...

i am surprised at how much play hockey got in that montage (not complaining) but as far as iconic moments - no Henderson scoring to end the summit series in 1972? or maybe that is overly or only relevant to Canadians and not iconic enough. Nevertheless, worth viewing on that note would be the CBC's report (at least the first few minutes, after the goal is scored the piece tends to wander). Check out the woman watching the game that appears in the clip starting at the 50 sec mark. She rules.

Was anyone else trying to name the faces as they came on? Oh, of course. Was I successful? Marginally so.....it was such ... a ... blur. I think I counted six women in the whole thing. I thought that I only saw FloJo the first time around, and then saw 6 others on the second watching, but you are right there. However, grum's point is well taken: this is less a history of 20th century sport in N.A. than a retrospective of the major televisual moments. There aren't as many major televisual moments with female athletes. Thankfully, the few that were there weren't cheesecake shots.

posted by smithers at 01:22 PM on April 28, 2005

i am surprised at how much play hockey got in that montage I was thinking the same thing, and before jasonbondshow mentioned that it was ESPN, I just assumed that it was a Canadian who produced it because of that fact. A clip of Gretzky as a kid? The clip where the guy scoops the puck up on his blade and reaches around into the cage? You have to know your stuff to get those.

One one-second clip of a winter sport other than ice hockey Football is a winter sport. At least it is in Wisconsin.

that's only because that this was done pre-anna. I thought about that, but I dunno...it's not like she was the first sex symbol in women's sport. This is perhaps one of the best-known images from women's golf pre-2000 (probably nsfw), and it wasn't used. Nor was Brandi Chastain tearing off her jersey after the game winner in 1999 (although I am surprised they didn't use that clip).

it's in there. if you blinked you missed it, but it's there. Yup. I don't consider that cheesecake, though. And I did note Babe Didrickson and Decker the first time around, grum, you're right. But major televised moments, eh, I dunno, I can think of some that could have been included to give a little more diversity, sports-wise and not just gender-wise. Tennis was represented as tantrums and kiss-and-cry moments, and that was it, for example -- nothing I can recall of anyone playing. Ditto soccer IIRC. Apart from the Big Four, I think most of the rest was rather noteworthy for its lack of actual athletic content.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 03:59 PM on April 28, 2005

The challenge is to now document every moment in the video, second-by-second. ;) There were a couple of people I couldn't figure out the first couple viewings, and I don't remember the names of some of the people I did recognize ("Four Horsemen" football players, the girl Mary Decker tripped on, etc.) but could describe the scene/reason they are in. Apart from the Big Four, I think most of the rest was rather noteworthy for its lack of actual athletic content. That's probably because the "minor" sports (and I use that term poorly) have iconic figures (Sampras, Pele, Spitz) and not necessarily memorable mid-contest moments. Bjorg collapsing at Wimbledon was there, and we saw Spitz swimming, but it's hard to have a really tele-dramatic moment in tennis or swimming like Flutie's hail-mary, or Laetner's last-second shot. That said, I think it was a shame that the only visual of Pele is with his jersey off. However, that's my most vivid memory of Pele because I was too young to remember anything but his final match with the Cosmos. Surprisingly low NASCAR/CART content though. Of course, everything went by so fast that I had a hard time keeping track of all the references...

That's why they call them the big four, though, LLB. Or at least they used to. NHL 1917 - 2004. R.I.P.

grum - Zola Budd. and I think that was the first time I had actually seen that Tom Chmabers dunk (4:36 mark) and since I had never seen it I had to do some searching to confirm that was it. I mean lanky white guys flying through the key, how many famous moments of that kind can there be?

posted by gspm at 04:32 PM on April 28, 2005

Awesome. I liked how they linked up the lyrics and the images.... On "dues in life to pay" we got Payne Stewart and Walter Payton. I also caught something (I think) on "fools and sages" with Woody Hayes/Bob Knight and Lombardi/Paterno/Wooden/Bowman.

That's probably because the "minor" sports (and I use that term poorly) have iconic figures (Sampras, Pele, Spitz) and not necessarily memorable mid-contest moments. And yet they included the vid of Hermann crashing (which I bet I wasn't the only one to ID), and not just Hermann's smiling face receiving a medal or something. I think Klammer on the Hahnenkamm course at the Innsbruck Olympics would qualify too. And how 'bout Apolo Anton Ohno piling into the boards with all those guys like dogs on linoleum? Or, I dunno, some big figure skating thing? Bjorg collapsing at Wimbledon was there, and we saw Spitz swimming, but it's hard to have a really tele-dramatic moment in tennis or swimming like Flutie's hail-mary, or Laetner's last-second shot. Well, match points can be pretty tele-dramatic. I dunno. I think it's there if you're looking and if you know the sport. It just points to the fact that ESPN isn't there and doesn't know.

Track--Carl Lewis Tennis--Andre Agassi Boxing--Joe Louis, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard NBA--Dr. J, West (2 w/iconic shots), K. Malone, Olajuwon, Ewing NFL--Marino, LT, Rice MLB--Clemens, Bonds, Griffey, Mays (was the 54 catch in there), Williams Carl Lewis appears for a split second. I believe there is photo of Joe Louis. Tyson is shown in handcuffs. As Ricardo said, the Dr. J behind the backboard shot is there. The Mays catch is also there and a photo of Williams and Joe D.

I am going to burn the video to DVD some time next week. If anyone is interested, I will burn four others (I only have 5 blank DVDs left) and send them out to the first 4 SpoFites who email me (address in profile) with their mailing addresses. Nothing needs to be sent to me, just drop a few dollars to the SportsFilter server funder (if that still exists) or to the charity rcade was promoting, Modest Needs.

Updates: That's Bo Jackson running up the wall at 2:54, right? And it's Ken Griffey Jr. going up a wall at 6:22. Bonds appears (very briefly) at 3:54 and Agassi appears (crying) at 3:57. And who is the female swimmer getting greased up at the 0:47 mark? I assume that it's Secretariat running by himself at the 5:09 mark. Who are the basketball players shoving for position at 6:39? And man, watching Ali say "I'm a bad man!" for the umpteenth time still gives me chills. That, and Gehrig's speech, which is still one of the greatest/saddest sporting moments ever. Okay, if I get a free couple of hours this weekend, I'm going to try and document everything I can in this video....

Yes. The SpoFiWiki would be a great place to do this. However, someone would need to save the file to that server so people could look at and document on the fly if necessary.

If you can't seem to grab it from the original source, try this link: I used yousendit.com to send a copy of the file from work to home, and there should be a few more available downloads allowed: http://s49.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3AI2P1BZXMI1H168K6Y5G9W19Z

I've updated my list with your help, gspm and goddam. Thanks. Samsonov14: I love lists. Top ten lists, record lists, statistical lists...love'em. So something like this was too hard to resist. I put that together in about 4 hours of viewing each clip a couple of times and trying to nail down exactly who/what is being shown. I used Wikipedia to double-check some guesses (and nail down some dates). I've watched that video so often that when the song came on the radio today, I could picture most of the major clips in my head as it got to each part in the song (Jordan sinking the shot at the start of the song, the Walter Payton montage during the first drum set, etc). And I STILL love watching it...

6:36 I believe those are American sprinters Jesse Owens (gold) and Ralph Metcalfe (silver) in the 100m in 1936, or Owens (gold) and Matthew Robinson (silver) in the 200m, as documented in the film Olympia.

Update: it is the 100m. He is wearing white spikes in the clip, which he wore in the 100m. He wore black spikes in the 200m (from Olympic.org). What a fashion whore!

I just found this yesterday off a torrent site, and immediately wondered if someone had actually catalogued it. What a great job, grum. Here's a few things I know: 0:01 - Johnson vs Bird, Michigan State/Indiana State, likely in 1979 national championship 0:03 - The Cardinals of this era were known as the "Gashouse Gang", and that's a pretty famous video clip of their wacky ways. One of those guys is probably pitcher Dizzy Dean; maybe the keystone combo of Frankie Frisch (2B) & Joe Medwick (SS); Johnny Mize (1B) was also a star 0:04 - definitely American long jumper Bob Beamon 0:13 - maybe George Mikan? (pro hoops' first big superstar -- Minneapolis Lakers) 0:18 - definitely Joe Louis (in suit) 0:31 - old man may be Baron de Coubertin, the man responsible for the modern Olympics in 1896 0:34 - 1956-57 Boston Celtics (NBA champions): Red Auerbach hugging Bob Cousy, Bill Russell at right 0:40 - Byron Nelson, golfer 0:44 - John Wooden, UCLA basketball coaching legend 0:50 - lefty Rod Laver, the greatest tennis player of all-teim 0:52 - possibly Sugar Ray Robinson doing the punching? 2:14 - Jim Brown 2:17 - Bill Russell 2:25 - "Pistol" Pete Maravich 3:18 - Michael Jordan at UNC 3:26 - Alabama & Texas A&M football coaching legend Bear Bryant (in checked hat) 3:26 - UNC legendary coach Dean Smith (hugging point guard Jimmy Black) 3:27 - Joe Paterno of Penn State, not Ara Parseghian 3:54 - Byron Nelson, golf superstar (again: same as at 0:40). Won 11 PGA events in a row. 4:32 - Deion Sanders (not Dion) 4:34 - O.J. Simpson 4:38 - college basketball team winning game -- jersey looks like "Indiana" to me, player #23 5:10 - some baseball player celebrates 2000 somethings: has to be runs or RBIs, right? Hits would be kinda mundane... 5:12 - unknown golfer -- does the garb look like Watson (again?) 5:23 - 1999 Ryder Cup celebration by Justin Leonard, hero of the U.S. team 5:24 - Tennessee Vols player ? crying on coach Pat Summit's shoulder 5:30 - outfielder goes over the fence to catch a ball before it becomes a home run (who? when?) -- looks like an Oakland A, maybe

ok i think i have 5:30 figured out. it's kenny lofton at jacobs field. i thought it was a visting team at first but between 1994-99 the only team to wear a red or orange colored bill on the road was the tigers but they had no outfielder with that number. but the indians wear a red bill at home.
