CFL Pick 'Em, Week 5: East vs. West: Do the drastically different divisional results represent a fracture in cross-country Canadian unity? Opine freely on the subject while you make your picks inside.

Low scoring out East this week. Montreal depends on their D and rides to victory on the strength of two 2nd-quarter touchdowns, while Toronto holds the Bombers to a field goal and safety.

Different story in the West. Calgary utterly embarrasses B.C. at home, while Edmonton wins a wild one in Saskatchewan, coming back all the way from a 22-0 deficit. The highlight reel for that one is mandatory Monday-morning watching for all of you.

Spitztengle puts together a big six point week riding not on the shoulders of his beloved Eskimos, but on hitting both East margins. It's crowded at the top, with the top seven players just one good week away from each other.

We've got some nice momentum matchups, as well as some excellent lowmentum matchups. (Thank you, folks, I'm here all week.)

WEEK 5

Montreal @ Edmonton (Thursday, July 30) Edmonton seems to be putting it together, but until somebody steps up and does the job, Montreal is still the team to beat.

B.C. @ Hamilton (Friday, July 31) After a debacle at home, a trip to Hamilton may be just what the doctor ordered. But the forecast calls for a rainy week, and B.C. is in no shape to be playing wet-weather ball right now.

Winnipeg @ Toronto (Saturday, August 1) Toronto stifled all three of Winnipeg's quarterbacks last week, so the Bombers are looking at an old friend of the Argos. But Toronto's still the favourite for the home-and-home sweep.

Saskatchewan @ Calgary (Saturday, August 1) If the Riders can't patch up their injured D, Calgary may score into the triple digits on them.

Good luck!

But the cub insists "What if I'm a grizzly bear, or a brown bear?" Toronto by 9. The mother says "Look, you're dad is a polar bear, I'm a polar bear, so you must be a polar bear." Calgary by 12. Last week I was pretty much bang-on when I said we were all pickin' whether Montreal would cover the spread, 'cause winning outright was a no-brainer. Honestly, I have to say that this week "should" also be a no-brainer, and the spread bein' a bit more modest this week keeps the same issue at the table. I dunno though ... I've got my throat in shape after a few home games now, so perhaps the mystique of Commonwealth could once again start to be a factor in the Richie Hall era. As they say in Cree, "kakihikin" ... which means "it could happen ...". Here on the plains, the indigenous spirit might just rule tonight ... and the "Eskimos" will emerge victorious. Yep, they just might. I'll pick the EE by 8. A two-point convert might be the difference in this one at some point (i.e., forcin' the Als to have to go-for-it as the clock winds down).

What a great story it'd be if the Hammer actually had a contender this year. And while they do show flashes of brilliance at times, I still don't think they're quite all-together yet. And whlie I did predict BC to be the bottom of the western bunch this year, this is one of those games where Wally will find a way to win. Besides AB3 will be more of a distraction than an impactual player this week. Give it to the favoured Lions by a comfortable 12.

For the second week in a row, this matchup is gonna go to the Argos. Focused on coming together as a squad, we're gonna see if losin' Bruce's baggage is gonna pay off. Again, the Bombers aren't necessarily as bad as last week's low-scoring affair suggests, they aren't very good. They will score more points this week, but so will the Argos. We're gonna see this game go over 65 total points this week. Toronto by 7, 38-31.

Oh, Lord it's hard to be a Rider fan. I mean it always has been, but for some reason they're still clinging to that lone Grey Cup win from a couple of years ago. They're arrogant. They're abrasive. They've lost touch with what the old-timers always knew was the real state of affairs. They'll give you a good contest, but the win column will always be a little light. Stamps are just gonna keep gettin' better. As the loudest and proudest EE fan in the house, this is a hard thing for me to say. But it's true. Stamps are gonna find a way to win this one, even if the Riders do come with a little venom in their bite this week. Another high-scoring affair sees the Stamps outpace the Riders by 10 ... probably by pulling away late on their home turf.

And on a closing note, well-played by DJE on the save for J5V ... a newbie to our ranks, but when he's back online I'm sure he'll be pleased to know that he's not been forgotten. DJE rules ... if I had to, I'd pay for this pool! Keep up the good work!

Maybe, but depending on how things play out in the Hammer tonight, it could be a real showdown shaping up for next week b/w the EE and TiCats.
