I know nothing about the history of the game, but this post gave me just a peek about the great heritage that must lie behind what most of the world considers the "only" sport. Thanks for finding this one, Fat Buddha.
Thank god I'm a Red Devil! Sheffield FC's playing Inter?! Why aren't they playing Wednesday instead? You think the game would have caught on in the US had the goalposts remained without the crossbars? They won't have to play their brand of football, where only 2 players in the team can actually use their feet!
There's a terrific book about the sensual (yes, really) history of English football - "Those Feet" by David Winner. It explains how football was first organised by Victorian moralists to stop unclean practices. The whole of Chapter 2 is about masturbation.
Well at least it's a step up from Roman gladiator games. Funny that it was intended to subdue the masses. Too bad they couldn't foresee the riots in the streets after a match.
It explains how football was first organised by Victorian moralists to stop unclean practices. Football and circumcision, eh?
