First round knockouts: The Padres showed some life in an expected drubbing, but who could have predicted the White Sox would crush Boston 14-2? Division series day one banter inside with one more game to go.

The sox got beat badly, but as they say- it's still just one game. Wells looked sharp last time he pitched, and there's the old "regression to the mean" to consider. While a short series doesn't give time for the numbers to all work out, it would be pretty stunning if the Sox could maintain even half that many runs for the rest of the series, or the Sox are held to 2 runs each game. I would expect a bounce back by Boston in game 2, with a lopsided result in the other direction.

Hey, they lost 19-8 last year before coming back and beating NYY. We will be ok :)

Matt Clement sucks. I could have predicted it.

I can guarantee the Sox will win this series!!!!!

I've seen quite a few sox games this season and for some reason always missed clement's starts. Wow. Now we have to depend on a 42 year old pitcher to get us back in it. I know he can do it, but we're walking a fine line. And I really don't want to see clement out there again.

Clement 3 1/3, 7 H, 8 R, 0 Ks, 3 HR, 21.60 ERA The ex-Cub factor has cursed the Red Sox again.

The Sox got a chance tomorrow, as long as Wells's bay window don't throw his back out...good luck with that...

Wells will do what he always does - win in the post-season. i just don't see how you can bet against him. This is one lopsided loss. Boston just seems to get handed these every once in a while. Who's pitching today? Is it Buerhle? That might be trouble. Boston did not do well against lefties all year. However, even down two games, I'd never count them out.

It takes three....bats were dead yesterday - perhaps today we can get something going.....Wells has looked good as of late too....

Boston did not do well against lefties all year. You've got some awful high standards.

Well the White Sox threw their hottest pitcher yesterday. You wont see the same results again- The Red Sox will still win. maybe

The Red Sox will still win. maybe Well, this is the opinion of Johnny Damon, as reported in today's Globe: "I'm not even sure who our No. 1 [starter] is. I thought [Clement] was capable of going out there and just making guys look silly. But he just didn't have it. He hasn't had it for the last month." Stern words...

. . . from someone who's proven himself level-headed and steady, time and again. Too bad we couldn't get Manny's take.

Comment icon posted by justgary at 9:35 PM CST on October 4 It took a long time, justgary, but you and I are in absolutely perfect agreement on this one! Here's a question though: Clement, Wakefield or Arroyo? I'm not happy or comfortable with any of them. Unless Wakefield can promise his knuckleballs will dance.

I think I'd go with Arroyo, unless, as you say, Wakefield can promise the dance of the knuckler.

Wake. Arroyo ,,, Clement. The ,,, indicates a dropoff in trustability.

It took a long time, justgary, but you and I are in absolutely perfect agreement on this one! Sports, the great uniter ;) Here's a question though: Clement, Wakefield or Arroyo? That's the problem. Too many questions. Of course, lowe was a question mark going into the playoffs last year and he stepped up. So it's possible someone will plug the hole.

During his weekly interview with Boston sports radio station WEEI, Red Sox manager Terry Francona today said he would start left-handed hitting John Olerud against the southpaw Mark Buehrle in tonight's Game 2 of the ALDS. He also said Matt Clement would probably start again if the series gets to a Game 5. God help us.

You're not complaining about taking Olerud over Millah, ah ewe?

posted by yerfatma at 06:10 PM on October 05, 2005

I think you know the answer ;)

posted by justgary at 06:27 PM on October 05, 2005

I think Francona said that just to scare the team into action so it doesn't come down to Clement in game Five.

I'm missing something...how come the Nationable league teams didn't play both days?
