A Radical 'Radial' Solution: "Even under the most severe conditions, the worst that will happen with one of the Radial Bats is one of the wedges will crack. No danger will be presented to any of the players, umpires, coaches or spectators in the stadium."

Besides which, MLB could just raise the mound or do something else to mitigate the batters' new advantage.

I'm rooting to see Fuentes and Street get dealt for the benefit of my fantasy team. I'm already satisfied with the move by the Cubs that got them Harden and Gaudin. I'm hearing that they're shopping for another lefty hitter, which makes me wonder if Edmonds is hurting more than has been let on. Otherwise, I don't see the need.

Leitch: Why Mark Cuban Won't Get the Cubs "The guy has no chance. ... Mark Cuban will never own the Cubs, no matter how much money he waves in front of the Tribune Corp." -- Deadspin's Will Leitch

There wasn't anything to the linked article except bloviating. Leitch may not be wrong that the current owners won't let Cuban play in their reindeer games, but he didn't make any sort of case for it.

Notre Dame makes history and LSU comes away with a big Sugar Bowl win. LSU defeated Notre Dame 41-14 in the Sugar Bowl's return to the Superdome, and handed Notre Dame its ninth straight bowl loss which is the most in NCAA history.

They like to play certain teams every year (U of M, MSU, Navy, USC) and playing in a conference wouldn't allow that. Oh wouldn't it? USC, MSU & UofM get to play Notre Dame don't they? And the Big Ten had been in negotiations with ND to admit them to the Big Ten, which would have taken care of MSU and UofM. There's four non-conf games available now, so USC, Navy are not a problem. You could probably add Boston College in there too if you really wanted. What I don't understand is why any ND fans would rather see ND stay independent. It'd be better for the team and fans if they dumped their BCS priveleges and joined a conference. They'd end up in better bowl matchups and would probably improve the quality of their football too, not only ending their streak of futility by winning a lower tier bowl, but also improving such that they might actually earn a higher tier bowl shot that they would actually have a chance of winning.

Spartans Complete Greatest Comeback Ever. Michigan State comes back from 38-3 down to win in the greatest comeback in NCAA 1-A history.

Ugh. It's not much fun being a NW fan this year. Glad to see Bacher get in and do something though. Brewer had just been spinning his wheels. Speculation is that Fitz is going to have to clean house and get a new set of asst. coachs to replace the ones he got saddled with this year. The offensive coordinator has no experience in the position and would have had Walker as a mentor, but Fitz was a defensive coach and has plenty of learning to do on his own. NW definitely needs a more experienced OC. And don't even get me started on how rotten Greg Colby has been as the DC for the last few years. This year he's gotten the defense to barely adequate, which would have been great if we still had the offense we did last year with Walker's hand on it and Baz as QB.

Piniella finds a wallet in Chicago. Cubs bypass Joe Girardi and Bruce Bochy, grabbing Piniella for the bargain rate of $3 mil/season for 3 years.

People aren't pissed because he's having trouble hitting, they're pissed because they think paying some $25 mil a year should guarentee a ring. The Hardball Times has a good consideration of that.

I'm really disappointed the Cubs didn't snag Joe Girardi. The opinion I'm seeing coming out of Cubs blogs and which I agree with is that we're getting another version of Dusty, this time with a temper. I'm forseeing bad, bad times for the Cubs for the next few years.

Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest Four-time world champion, and odds favorite, (1/3), Takeru Kobayashi of Japan will once again defend his title against top eaters from around the globe. The tough competition includes Eric "Badlands" Booker, (9/5), Oleg Zhornitsky, (4/1), and "Hungry" Charles Hardy, (7/1), while the 'field' is represented by notables Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, US record holder, Joey Chestnut and 60 year-old Rich LeFevre and his wife, Carlene LeFevre. Santioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating it will, of course, meet their safety standards.

Northwestern University football coach Randy Walker is dead. He died last night of an apparent heart attack. Walker was 52 years old and was the second winningest coach in school history.

He'll really be missed at Northwestern. He was a good coach and he made sure his players graduated. He also was committed to staying at Northwestern rather than looking at it as another step up.
