The MLB Trade Deadline is Looming.

I'm rooting to see Fuentes and Street get dealt for the benefit of my fantasy team. I'm already satisfied with the move by the Cubs that got them Harden and Gaudin. I'm hearing that they're shopping for another lefty hitter, which makes me wonder if Edmonds is hurting more than has been let on. Otherwise, I don't see the need.

Notre Dame makes history

They like to play certain teams every year (U of M, MSU, Navy, USC) and playing in a conference wouldn't allow that. Oh wouldn't it? USC, MSU & UofM get to play Notre Dame don't they? And the Big Ten had been in negotiations with ND to admit them to the Big Ten, which would have taken care of MSU and UofM. There's four non-conf games available now, so USC, Navy are not a problem. You could probably add Boston College in there too if you really wanted. What I don't understand is why any ND fans would rather see ND stay independent. It'd be better for the team and fans if they dumped their BCS priveleges and joined a conference. They'd end up in better bowl matchups and would probably improve the quality of their football too, not only ending their streak of futility by winning a lower tier bowl, but also improving such that they might actually earn a higher tier bowl shot that they would actually have a chance of winning.

Spartans Complete Greatest Comeback Ever.

Ugh. It's not much fun being a NW fan this year. Glad to see Bacher get in and do something though. Brewer had just been spinning his wheels. Speculation is that Fitz is going to have to clean house and get a new set of asst. coachs to replace the ones he got saddled with this year. The offensive coordinator has no experience in the position and would have had Walker as a mentor, but Fitz was a defensive coach and has plenty of learning to do on his own. NW definitely needs a more experienced OC. And don't even get me started on how rotten Greg Colby has been as the DC for the last few years. This year he's gotten the defense to barely adequate, which would have been great if we still had the offense we did last year with Walker's hand on it and Baz as QB.

Piniella finds a wallet in Chicago.

People aren't pissed because he's having trouble hitting, they're pissed because they think paying some $25 mil a year should guarentee a ring. The Hardball Times has a good consideration of that.

I'm really disappointed the Cubs didn't snag Joe Girardi. The opinion I'm seeing coming out of Cubs blogs and which I agree with is that we're getting another version of Dusty, this time with a temper. I'm forseeing bad, bad times for the Cubs for the next few years.

Swedes rout Czechs, now they wait.

Actually, Swedish rule of Finland ended in 1809. Then it was the Russians' turn until 1917. And then Russia invaded Finland in 1939... So, the Finns got to stomp their bête-noir today. Make no mistake, the Finns and Swedes are indeed rivals, but friendly rivals. The two nations have an annual sports "battle", which is a big deal for both sides. There's a lot of exchange culturally, since there are a significant minority of native Finnish speakers in Sweden and vice versa. I'm really looking forward to this game!

True Grit in the Pairs Figure Skating Finals

And if they were in such good shape that they could finish second with that disaster, why not just pull that move from the routine, play it a little safer and win? Could I enter next time round and fill my routine with quintuple full-buttkicking salchows and quad backflip spinaroonies, and then get damn near full marks for just attempting them and failing badly? Well, they couldn't have, actually. They could have easily gotten silver without attempting the quad, but the Russian team of Totmianina and Marinin had a nigh insurmountable lead thanks to the Russian Bonus all Russian skaters get in the scoring. Even without that, the Russians were the team to beat and only the Zhangs had any chance to catch up with them. And they didn't get the points for the failed throw, although I think they did get some emotional bonus points thrown in for the other elements. Besides which, I'm sure they wanted to stake a claim on skating history, much like Inoue and Baldwin did with their successful throw triple axel in the short program. I can't argue that being able to pick up and restart in the middle of a program isn't dodgy though.

True Grit in the Pairs Figure Skating Finals

After a devasting fall on their first element (an unprecedented throw quadruple salchow), it seemed that Xang and Xang would not complete their long program due to an injury to Dan Xang's knee. However, she managed to work through it and the pair were allowed to continue their program from the point of the fall and delivered a strong (if not perfect) performance, gaining the silver and a standing ovation. I've seen them and other pairs in practice. Those women are tough as nails. They have to be.

Great Skater, Terrible Timing

Mao Asada is not just a jumper, nor could she be to succeed with the new scoring protocol. I've seen all her Grand Prix stuff but her her long program in the final (which is on tape), and she's strong in all facets of womens' figure skating. Despite what lame brain american commentators say, she's got a spiral that rivals Sasha Cohen's, excellent spins and strong footwork. She definitely can improve as she matures, but she's already got the technical stuff down and the confidence and presence on the ice to be a consistent world competitor.

Say It Ain't So, Jackie

What's wrong with writing an article about this? It's interesting, although the article itself isn't so hot. I do think that it's unfortunate that there isn't so much African American interest in playing baseball these days considering that black Americans have been playing and excelling at the sport since antebellum days. It's a shame to see that tradition in jeopardy of fading away. Baseball is diminished by the trend, despite it not being anyone's fault.

Hall of Fame Intangibles.

Curt Flood's suit against baseball is something every baseball fan should know about.[2] [3] [4] Considered blasphemy by owners at the time, Flood's resistence to being treated as a piece of property eventually got him to the Supreme Court. He lost there, but the shaky logic of the majority decision and the publicity it drew weakened the foundations of the reserve clause, leaving it vulnerable to challanges in the future.

Fore - or maybe side?

I think that the homeowners had a reasonable expectation that the country club would not be such a bad neighbor. When I was a kid, our neighbor built a golf course right up against our existing house and property. If we'd had these kinds of problems, would you be so quick to dismiss them? As it stood, our yard was fairly large and we were well removed from where the tees and green were. We still got the odd ball that make it into the yard, but not very far and we didn't have too much trouble. Our next door neighbor, on the other hand (not the one who built the golf course), ended up putting up an eight foot fence and still had golfers climbing it to steal things from his garden.

Will Phil Jackson come back to the Lakers?

And Jackson's certainly got plenty of money and if he feels like coaching again, he can get a phat contract from the Knicks or elsewhere in a matter of minutes. Turn off the reality distortion field. Jackson's got zero interest in going back to an organization that threw him under the bus once already to placate a selfish loser who's going to turn out to be an albatross for the remainder of his contract.

Blame Canada

God Bless America was not written as a peace song. It was a straight up God-and-country march right from the beginning. In fact, Woody Guthrie heard it, and got so angry at the jingoism in it that he wrote This Land Is Your Land essentially as a protest. Chicobangs beat me to it. I'll sing Woody's tune happily any day [and with ALL the lyrics intact], but even the title of God Bless America implies in a none too subtle way that I'm not wanted as an American.

I understand what you're saying about sheen, but comparing delgado to someone like martin sheen who, regardless if I agree with him or not, as actively participated in marches and actually done work to help promote his causes is a bit of a stretch. You should read that article by Rhodan that's linked above before you make assertions about what Delgado has or hasn't done.: Delgado, who was signed by Toronto when he was 16, spent two years involved in the movement to force the Navy to stop using Vieques as a testing site. The military ended the exercises on May 1, 2003. Now, Delgado and others want the United States government to help clean up the economic, psychological and health messes it left behind. He has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars toward that effort and solicited other Puerto Rican celebrities to join the campaign against the aftereffects.

Phil Garner? Why? This is good for my Cubbies, I suppose, but if you're going to dump a coach for underperforming on a team that's trying to actually win it all, you'd better work to find a replacement who's actually got a winning track record.
