Not tonight, honey, I have a game tomorrow. The notion of pre-game abstinence from sex to enhance athletic performance is a longstanding one. But is that notion as fictional as Rocky Balboa? Sean Cupp thinks so. Chris Byrd is the guinea pig. Tom Fornelli resents his high school coach.

Carnegie Mellon and GM's Boss Wins DARPA Urban Challenge Six out of eleven unmanned cars finished the 60-mile course in Victorville, California. Stanford University placed second, Virginia Tech took third, and MIT took an improbable fourth. Erik Sofge live blogged the event.

IOC appealing to youth. With some help from the International Cycling Union, skateboarding may be an Olympic sport at the 2012 London games. Carlton Reid does not like it one bit because the kilo event has already been lost to make room for BMX.

Evolution of the NHL Goaltenders were the first to benefit from a major rule change. Prior to the 1917-18 season, the rules were changed to allow goaltenders to fall to the ice to make a save. Previously they had been penalized for such action. Since then, most rule changes were implemented to increase scoring.

Terrell Owens is a sweet, sweet man. If you get mowed down by a Honda Civic, you'd be extremely lucky to have Terrell Owens nearby.

Actually, when I first read the article, the scene that Skot quoted was the first thing that I thought of.
Brett Favre: Packers should let me play elsewhere Brett Favre finally is speaking for himself: He wants to play but doesn't feel welcome in Green Bay, so he's asking to be released. The quarterback's first substantial comments on his latest retirement decision reversal...

Judge Sides with Redskins The Washington Redskins have won the latest round in a 16-year court battle against a group of American Indians, prevailing on a technicality that again skirts the issue of whether the team’s nickname is racially offensive. In a ruling dated June 25 and first circulated Thursday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the youngest of the seven Native American plaintiffs waited too long after turning 18 to file the lawsuit that attempts to revoke the Redskins trademarks.

I think that if the Washington owner really wanted to increase revenue, that a name and logo change would really boost profits. Much like the uniform change did for the entire NHL.
Dallas Stars Sign Sean Avery The NHL's infamous agitator, fresh off a playoff stunt that inspired a new no-mimes rule, signed a four-year, $15.5 million deal shortly after the league's free agent signing period began.

Yeah, but he's also known for wearing out his welcome. I hear his shelf life is only two years, so the Stars signed him for two years too many.

I'd be turning in my Stars jersey today if I was a fan.
Easy to say when you are not really a Stars fan. But I do know of one that may be going to even more extremes.
I'm also kind of shocked that this is the first thread of the Free Agency Frenzy. James Duthie quote: You’ve heard of spending like drunken sailors? How about spending like billionaire sailors on crack.
Melrose Place now in Tampa Barry Melrose was hired as coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, returning to the NHL after 12 years as a television analyst because he wants to be "on the inside again."

Sorry, fabulon, but I think that I can safely speak for most Americans when I say," We do not want Pierre [deleted] McGuire."
One of my first comments on Spofi included a sentence about how much I missed The Mullet. Love him or hate him, the guy eats, sleeps, and breathes hockey. I look forward to seeing him behind the bench.
George Carlin: (Late) Sports Authority Mourning the passing of the ultimate arbiter in the "Is it a sport or not?" debate. Also reference his famous comparison between baseball and football.

Nice link, I started to highlight my favorite parts, but I would have ended up copying and pasting over half of the article.

On April 11, 1975, the New England Whalers and Minnesota Fighting Saints set a WHA record with a bench clearing brawl that resulted in 217 minutes in penalties. (In a playoff game.) To commemorate the occasion, the Whalers released a 7" single featuring Bob Neumeier & Bill Rasmussen's gleeful blow-by-blow commentary of the fight. The audio is actually kind of amazing.

I have been waiting all day to listen to this. Great stuff, senior bangs.
Game 3.
Detroit Red Wings v Pittsburgh Penguins.
What's happening with the Penguins? What changes do they need to make?

I'm starting to have flashbacks of 2003.
Well, except that Babcock and Rafalski are on the same team.
Sidney Crosby = the new Larry Bird? "Some even suggest that having Crosby in the Cup finals could give the NHL the same enormous boost in popularity the NBA received way back in 1984, when Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics met in that league's championship series." Well then.

Eight times if you watch all the games on television.
Fourteen, if you include the playoffs.
I find it very shocking that somebody has not heard of Crosby, considering how sick I am of hearing about him.
I also don't understand all this "VS is hard to find" bologna (now the NHL Network, that's another story). My remote has a button that says "guide". It took me less than a minute to find it when I switched providers.
Russia Is Luring Back NHL Stars: "the Soviet Union [was] a hockey superpower for decades that was bleeding talent profusely. The sport had all but disintegrated there by the early 1990s as the empire that spawned one of the most successful sporting industries in the world melted into decrepitude. Most hockey players of international merit left Russian clubs, which began to fester in an atmosphere of poverty, gangsterism and occasional violence."
But thanks to a national economy that's starting to regain its footing, as well as the exodus of former NHLers like Oleg Tverdovsky and Alexei Yashin, the Russian Super League is beginning to bring hockey back to the forefront of the Russian sporting landscape.

It's not uncommon for undrafted North American players to go overseas to play. Just look where Rafalski was playing before being signed by the Devils. So I could see Canadian and US players going to the Russian Super League. Where were all of the elite players playing during the 2004-2005 season? When does the current CBA expire?

From about.com:
Over 350 members of the NHL Players' Association took their game to Europe during the 2004-05 NHL lockout
Dynamo Moscow won its the Russian championship with an NHL assist from Maxim Afinogenov, Artem Chubarov, Pavel Datsyuk, Andrei Markov and Sergei Samsonov.
Based in Kazan, a small city in the eastern republic of Tatarstan, the Snow Leopards spent a reported $65 million US on a roster that included Nikolai Khabibulin, Vincent Lecavalier, Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexei Kovalev, Dany Heatley and Darius Kasparaitis.
The Czech league was victimized by bidding wars. Jaromir Jagr, Martin Havlat and Patrik Elias were among those who began with Czech teams before bailing out for better offers in Finland or Russia.
Russia hosted 70 NHLPA visitors, with a couple of teams said to be among the richest in Europe.
Emphasis mine. All I am saying is that Russia (or Europe in general) wasn't such a bad place to play during the last lockout. And as you can see, some places did have a decent amount of money to throw around. Add to that the seemingly declining popularity of the NHL, and the possibilty of another lockout in the near future, well, the thought of a European league competing with the NHL doesn't seem so far fetched to me.

Hey, price drivers and trade bait are very important to the NHL!
No Jokinen, Zednick's Throat Slashed During Hockey Game. Zednik is in stable condition following surgery to repair a "deep gash" in his neck, and the Panthers are flying his wife Jessica to Buffalo to be with him.
