That's twelve years to a thirty year old goaltender. Should we place bets now on if he fulfills the full length of the contract?

I was shocked when I read the headline, but after reading the article, not so much.
The article addresses the discontent on the process by which Saskin was hired and Eric Lindros' resignation as the association's ombudsman but what it doesn't address is how there are plenty of capable players still out there that won't get a job this season in the NHL due to the salary cap or those that believe that they will get underpaid because of collusion.
I fear the worst, that another hockeyless winter awaits us in the near future.

Favre wasn't the only addition the Jets made that year. There was also Alan Faneca, Calvin Pace, Dustin Keller, Jay Feely, and Kris Jenkins just to name a few.

Would it make him a better person if he simply threw wads of cash around the place without any thought? Surely not.
I have a problem with personal foundations that have plenty of money coming in, but small amounts actually being disbursed for charitable purposes
That reminds me of something a wise man once told me. He said that before you give to any charity/non-profit organization that you should find out what percentage of your donation will go to the actual cause and how much goes to administrative costs. Supposedly, most of the charities that use telemarketing only receive about 20% of your donation (maybe even less).

I see Mad Dog is also on his way to Chicago. I can't say I'm happy to see him to leave New Jersey, but that much money was too rich for Lou to match.
What's up with Montreal? First they trade for Gomez and then they sign Gionta to a 5 year/$5 mil per deal. $12mil is an awful lot of money for an average of 38 goals per season.

From section 50.7 of the current CBA (page 219):
...any decrease in Player Salary and Bonuses from one League Year to another may not exceed 50 percent of the Player Salary and Bonuses of the lower of the first two League Years of the SPC...
Legal mumbo jumbo aside, Chicago probably should have asked the Islanders how that Depietro contract has been working out so far.

Before the lockout, it seemed like it was common for contenders to sign a veteran who had yet to win a Cup. Hasek, Bourque, Andreychuk to name a few. As a Devils fan I was worried about that extra motivation back in 2003 when the Mighty Ducks had veteran Steve Thomas. Somehow, he didn't make the list.

Hold on a minute, the Czechs-Mex Line? Really? Oh wait, the caption tells the story:
Certainly nowhere near as famous or successful as Edmonton's stellar `80s line of Wayne Gretzky, Esa Tikkanen and Jari Kurri, this short-lived line (2006-07) scored points with us for its clever moniker based on the trio's ethnic heritages.
OK, so it's not about talent as much as SI just likes the names. Well, as much as I despise the Flyers, even if they only made it into this list because of their nickname, I think the Legion of Doom deserves to be mentioned in a list of greatest lines.

but in lieu of the EGG line should have been the EAS. Elias, Arnott, and Sykora were the top line on a team that scored the second most goals in the NHL and allowed the least in 99-00, and they also won the Cup.
More commonly known as the A-Line, but I agree, still better than the Elias, Gomez, Gionta line.
Funny thing about those guys, prior to Mondays game in Nashville from Tom Gulitti:
From the odd category. Although Jason Arnott said he saw Patrik Elias for "a little bit" on Sunday in Nashville, Elias denied he saw or spoke to Arnott on Sunday. In fact, Elias said his last communication with Arnott was when he sent him an text message to congratulate him for playing in his 1000th game on Dec. 23.

From about.com: Over 350 members of the NHL Players' Association took their game to Europe during the 2004-05 NHL lockout Dynamo Moscow won its the Russian championship with an NHL assist from Maxim Afinogenov, Artem Chubarov, Pavel Datsyuk, Andrei Markov and Sergei Samsonov. Based in Kazan, a small city in the eastern republic of Tatarstan, the Snow Leopards spent a reported $65 million US on a roster that included Nikolai Khabibulin, Vincent Lecavalier, Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexei Kovalev, Dany Heatley and Darius Kasparaitis. The Czech league was victimized by bidding wars. Jaromir Jagr, Martin Havlat and Patrik Elias were among those who began with Czech teams before bailing out for better offers in Finland or Russia. Russia hosted 70 NHLPA visitors, with a couple of teams said to be among the richest in Europe. Emphasis mine. All I am saying is that Russia (or Europe in general) wasn't such a bad place to play during the last lockout. And as you can see, some places did have a decent amount of money to throw around. Add to that the seemingly declining popularity of the NHL, and the possibilty of another lockout in the near future, well, the thought of a European league competing with the NHL doesn't seem so far fetched to me.

I did not like that they sung God Bless America instead of the National Anthem either. I also didn't like all of the "let's shove Sidney Crosby down their throats" type coverage. He is a great player, and the play where he juggled the puck in the air into the offensive zone was impressive, but I didn't need to see the replay every five minutes. That said, with all of the potential non/casual fans that were viewing the game, I can understand why they did it. What I can't understand was that hole in the ice problem that delayed the game so much. I did learn something new, that football fields are a nine inch high mound and not a flat field. But who's idea was it to use plywood in a wet environment that a three ton piece of machinery* would be riding on to make the surface level? I can even forgive them for splitting the third period into two ten minute periods and letting the teams switch sides of the ice, but splitting the OT into two 2:30 minute sessions, that was too much. I really did enjoy watching the game from the warm comfort of my living room though. I would call it a huge success considering that I live in college basketball/NASCAR country and the local paper that only sometimes posts NHL standings dedicated 1/4 of a page to the game and even printed color pictures! While I did enjoy the game, I did not enjoy the linked article. I guess John and Gene are trying to get jobs with the MSM by giving a slight to New Jersey. Don't they know that the 'in thing' to do is pick on Nashville?

I think Rafalski will fit in quite well with Detroit. The change of atmosphere and playing in his 'hometown' will probably do him some good. I wish him the best of luck. However, that does leave a hole on the Devils defense. I don't know of anybody in the system that can replace him, maybe Andy Greene can step up, or maybe Lou can find another gem playing in Europe.

I'm not saying it's Basillie's ploy, I'm sure he would much rather have the Predators than an expansion team. The NHL does not want Nashville to move because that would leave a huge hockey void in that precious area of the United States. I'm also not convinced that Craig Leipold is in it just for the money, he is a Nashville resident and a huge hockey fan. He wants the team to stay and succeed in Nashville. His original plan was just to sell a share of the team. I don't understand the economics of how the sale to Basillie would raise the value of all the other teams, and if it does, what good does it do unless you are putting it up for sale. I haven't heard of any other owners looking to sell.
posted by MrFrisby at 01:28 PM on June 15
From this thread we see that it looks like the NHL wants to expand to 32 teams. Kansas City will have an arena ready by then. Baslillie seems to have Hamilton all ready to go. There is also another group of from Nashville ready to make an offer to buy the Predators but can not while Basillie's is on the table. So it seems as though everything is set for the NHL if they can steer everybody in the right direction. They get the expansion fees from two teams and Basillie saves money because the expansion fee is half of what he would pay for the Preds. That was my thinking, but you have some good points there, Doc.

The General Association of Recognized Sports Federations. The IASC is not a member. There are requirements on the number of member national federations, participation in World Championships, and the like. Skateboarding does have World Championships, so I guess they are part of the way there. If I understand it correctly, (thanks Amateur) every country would need to have it's own federation/association of skateboarding and all of those would have to be a part of a bigger federation that oversees them all? O.k, sure just going in under the ICU can get skateboarding into the Olympics rather quickly, but I would rather see it get there under it's own power. Skateboarding has it's own disciplines such as street, park, vert, and big air. If cycling has to remove some of it's own events to allow for these, then I see a potentially big problem, a conflict of interest so to speak.
