Hot Chat update: Thinking about integrating directly with Twitter. In the meantime, I'm on there, if that's your sort of thing.

In a nutshell

Go Jays. Go Sens. Go Furious George GOAT. Go rouge.

(Lose Leafs Lose.)

In our hearts forever: Andy Peters vs. Rob Ray. Okay, so it turns out that you can't watch that video anymore. Damn. In its place, I present to you Aaron Downey vs Brad Norton—the fight that changed the NHL forever.

Sara Orlesky is cute, but Patricia Boal is always in the right place at the right time.

The teams

Coming real soon.

The platform

There are certain inalienable truths in sports, at least according to me.

  1. "Intangibles" do not exist in any meaningful form. If a player brings something "intangible" to his team, that should be reflected in either his individual stats or the team's stats. If not, then his "intangibles" have no value and are not worth discussing.

  2. The NHL's regular season standings will remain inherently unfair until all games are worth the same number of points.

  3. The pitch-out is the best play ever conceived in any sport.

  4. You are not a unique snowflake: everybody here is a fan of a team. Referring to said team in the first-person possessive does nothing to strengthen your argument or make you stand out. Indeed, a comment beginning with "My Brewers" taints the comment's value by informing me that you're arguing through the blue-and-gold-tinted glasses of a Brewers fan, and not objectively as a sports fan. Be proud, but be reasonable.

  5. Winning breeds relaxation, losing breeds frustration. It is infinitely easier to get along with your teammates when you're winning lots of games. Let's stop gazing at .600 teams and talking about how they're all bosom buddies. (Feel free to do the same with .400 teams, though.)

Great moments in sports journalism

Like most discriminating SpoFites, I'm really picky about the commentators and analysts that I have to watch and listen to. Fortunately, there are a few shining stars which pop up on my television. Included with your basic Rogers Cable package up here is a scrappy small-market sports channel, The Score. Their programming's centred around their near-constant highlight/update reels. They're my favourite in terms of sports news and entertainment: they just have fun with the stuff.

Tell it like it is

Sunday afternoons feature The Score on the NFL, which keeps track of the millions of games going on at once. December 19, they were doing their usual mid-afternoon round-up. The game was Minnesota at Detroit:

[highlight reel running]

"Minnesota gets one late in the fourth quarter to go up by seven, but it doesn't matter, because Detroit marches right back to score the major with eight seconds left in the game."

[boxscore screen comes up]

"It's still 28-27 as we're just waiting for the extra point, I'm just watching it now... and THEY MUFFED THE SNAP! They muffed the snap! Amazing. Amazing. Eight seconds left, the touchdown, and they muffed the snap. Okay, hang on, we gotta get you this picture. Amazing. Amazing."

[highlight comes up]

"Okay, here is it. This JUST HAPPENED, folks. Detroit scores to nearly tie it up, and they muff the snap. Amazing. Amazing. Man. Lions suck."

I love good sports journalism.

How to call a Tampa Bay home run

From MLB highlights on The Score Tonight, Summer 2006:
TIM: Fifth inning, Johnny Gomes at the dish. Now he's a model, if you know what I mean, 'cause he does his little thing on the catwalk.

SID: On the catwalk?

TIM: On the catwalk, yeah.

SID: He does his little thing on the catwalk?

TIM: That's correct.

It's a definite upgrade over Jack Cust, but they'll need a lot more than that to put them over the top. In fact, I agree with Mike Wilner's take, and am looking forward to an A's-Jays trade in the summer:

The A’s, despite the fact that they currently share first place in the West, are going nowhere this year, but bringing in Thomas shows fans that Beane is trying to ride the wave of the team’s hot start. Truth is, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he grabbed Thomas in order to cash in on the bounty he might bring back on July 31st. Who knows, maybe after Thomas heats up and the Athletics cool down, Frank will get traded back to the Blue Jays! Now THAT would be fun.

My favourite part of the video—besides the gag, obviously—was just the inside look at what would go on in the clubhouse as news of a trade is broken: like the player-manager meeting, something that would never be put on video in earnest.

Hurricanes/Senators in Four Player Deal. Hurricanes send Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore to the Senators for Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves.

posted to Hockey at 1:52 PM CDT

Well huh. Hmm. Well. Hmmmmm.

Well, at least it's not Olly Saprykin and Tyler Arnason.

Yeah, I think this is a good move. Corvo is good but dispensable, and Eaves will become too pricey for what he offers to Ottawa (maybe even an offer-sheet risk this summer?). Stillman and Commodore are two solid depth guys who won't screw around like Muckler's trade-deadline acquisitions from years past.

It's just enough of a move to send a message (mainly to the team, I'd say), while not mortgaging the future to high heaven.

Giants Win Superbowl!

10 points after 3 quarters of play? That isn't very entertaining.

It is for people who appreciate defensive struggles (just like some people prefer 1-0 pitchers duals to 10-8 slugfests). I happen to prefer them like this actually.

I definitely prefer pitchers' duels to slugfests. However, more often than not, in the NFL, that score after 3 quarters is less indicative of sterling defense and more indicative of the supreme offensive conservatism on the part of the coaching staff that's ruled the league for the past few years—the "any offensive play that doesn't result in a turnover is a victory" attitude. This tends to results in offensives getting more conservative as the game stays close, because not giving up points becomes the primary goal. So for the average NFL game, I wouldn't necessarily assume a 7-3 score to be a defensive spectacle.

That said, this wasn't the average NFL game, and the Patriots were a team that ran against that conservative grain this year, so I don't think that assumption would apply this time.

As for me, I only managed to catch the last quarter of the game on the radio while on the road, and it was a pretty damn entertaining quarter.

When BB was walking on the field at the end, it was to get to TC. He hugged him, congratulated him and moved on. Not sure what the fuss is.

The radio commentator I was listening to noted that BB walked off the sideline with a second left on the clock, but explicitly noted that he was headed across the field to congratulate TC.

Adolf Hitler, Cowboys Fan Translated from the original German, this YouTube video poignantly captures how every NFL fan feels when your 13-3 team goes one-and-done in the playoffs after your quarterback spends his off week in Cabo with Jessica Simpson. Funny everywhere but Dallas.

Also, Elliotte Friedman's take is well worth a read for anyone wanting a more in-depth look: Ferguson's tenure is over, MLSE's structure to change.

And you get to come back on an interim basis a decade later.

How 'bout dem ball-girls?! The bottom line is having the best seat at Citizens Bank Park. It was enticing to Laura Litzenberger, another of the new ballgirls. "I spoke to some of the girls who were ballgirls last year and my biggest fear is touching a fair ball; they told us to concentrate on the game," said Litzenberger, a Kutztown University graduate with a degree in elementary education.

Rick Nash. Goal of the year. Sorry Toews. You've now got the second best.

After undressing both defencemen and the goalie, and facing a wide-open net, I think he should've just skated the puck back to the blue line, saying "nah, too easy, let's try that again."

Comment icon posted at 10:43 AM CDT on January 18

The thing that irks me is the advertisers and marketing people that don't seem to realize that this is what a highlight-reel goal looks like. Every single TV spot that features a goal being scored is the same: burly guy skates in and takes a slapshot from the blue line which evades the clueless goalie. Even those post-lockout "My NHL" ads fell prey to it. That hasn't been a viable goal-scoring strategy since 1989 (despite some teams still making it a cornerstone of their playbook).
