Freddie Adu gets $1 million Nike contract.: OK, so he's no LeBron. But he is a star striker for the US Under-17 soccer team. He has an agent, US-based Soccernet LLC, whose clients include US national stars Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, as well as coach Bruce Arena. Adu was offered a contract by Inter Milan two years ago. He was also a recent target of Manchester United interest. Although this contract makes Freddy a professional athlete, his lawyer said that Freddy won't go pro for another year. Also, his mother had to sign the Nike contract. Freddy is only 13.

jason: According to the Washington Post article (last link in my post), there's a minimum age of 16 for Euro leagues. Also, according to the article, this guy appears to be a whiz in school. He's on an accelerated program to graduate high school next year, at 14!

This is a great story, especially for a high school student living in the DC area such as myself. I first saw Freddy Adu at a soccer tournament that I went to watch because Freddy played on a club team here called the Potomac Cougars that a friend of mine played on. I was amazed at his skill and his ability to see the field, and he's only 13! Who knows whether he is destined for great things or not... (Nike sure thinks he is) but regardless, it's great to see a local sports star make it on an international level, and I'll continue to watch his career with great interest.

But I've been thinking about this deal since it was announced on the weekend and (a) bully for Freddy and his Mom and (b) can I sue my parents now for not even trying to train me to be a pro athlete when I was a kid. Earlier Freddie Adu hysteria at SpoFi. You see, there's lots of evidence he's going to be great. Also, as soon as he blows up and goes big time, I'm calling his agent and demanding my cut for promoting Freddie. As billsays, it's all about the Freddies, erm, Benjamins.

I was in Dallas recently while the Dallas Cup soccer tournament was being played. People couldn't stop talking about Adu -- I didn't get a chance to attend, but the Lebron James comparison is apt.

Is he going to go by only one name (Pele, Renaldo, etc.)? Would Freddie or Adu be his choice? Because you can't be a star soccer player with two names. Well, unless you are English or German I guess.

SF, you have to be kidding! Although maybe it's just your being insane in the brain. And unlike you I don't put my hands down my pants in front of 200 or 300 other people. The movie is a pile of lovely technology used for no justifiable purpose (i.e., plot) with a confused and very tired philosophical veneer. The first one was several orders of magnitudes better even without the whizbang new sfx.

Well not everyone exactly, I loved The Matrix the first time I saw it and every time since (and there have been many). I've only heard bad things about Reloaded and am loathe to threaten my love of the first film by going to see it.

That Architect guy really annoyed me. But someone told me it all makes sense when you watch it again. The foreshadowing becomes clear. The repetition becomes meaningful. I'll have to see it again. Hey, SF, how'd you like that Moravengian cake scene? Gratuitous teen geek pandering. Hahahahahahahaha. "Cursing in French is like wiping your arse with silk." Hahahahahahaha.
