George Mikan dies at age 80: The first dominant big man in the history of the NBA has died. As the leader of the first dynasty in league history, he forced the rules to be modified, so teams would stand a chance against him and his Minneapolis Lakers, and it still just barely worked. R.I.P.

"I'm black. They don't build stuff for blacks.": Barry Bonds gives his perspective on: Racism in Boston (which he says doesn't come from first hand experience); his continual walks; statues, and other things.

NFL Owners fear the death of the Golden Goose: It's a classic battle of Socialism vs. Capitalism...just be glad there are no nukes involved this time around.

But, what about the fundamentals?: Candace Parker, who will attend the U of Tennessee next year, has won the McDonalds High School All-American Game Dunk Contest. Will this be the beginning of the end for sound fundamentals in the women's game, a la the men's game over the last 20 years? How soon before more women are able to play above the rim with consistency, and possibly get more attention for their game?

Manning re-signs with Colts: and gets a whopping $34.5 million signing bonus, according to reports. What's this about a salary cap in the NFL? With what the Redskins have been doing recently, and now this, the salary cap system seems to be under assault. How will these teams be able to stay competitive giving this much money out to just a couple players?

Josh Howard Disrespects National Anthem

Why does it matter what Josh Howard says? Does this fall under that whole "athletes are role models" thing again? He can feel free to say whatever he wants...he just has to be prepared for the inevitable backlash from something like this. He obviously doesn't care what you think, so why should we care what he thinks?

NFL Network To Air 8 Regular Season Games

I wonder if someone is inflating the numbers a bit? I would say it's more in the wording. The NFL number is all the subscribers who can possibly get the NFL Network, while the article's number is likely the number of subscribers who actually receive this channel.

Pill to monitor body temp in NFL tests.

I know the Jaguars were using these pills last season, so I guess they worked pretty well. They were used during games, as well.

Baseball Books That Will Never Be Written

My personal favorite is “How I Survived Two Death Star Runs” by Eric Wedge...I'm a geek like that.

Steve Nash is the MVP

Since it hasn't been posted yet, Dan the Bastard wrote in the Miami Herald that this vote may have had a lot to do with race, as "the little white guy beat the big black guy for MVP"...

"If steroids are cheating, why isn't LASIK?"

I would say that LASIK is no different then surgery to correct a broken arm or leg...it's just surgery to fix your eyesight after it starts going downhill. Nothing wrong with it, IMO.

As Nats Fans Get Jitters,

Except for Chavez, the Nationals have no natural center fielder. Except for Chavez, with his 32-steal speed and knack for making contact, the team also lacks any player who has the classic tools of a leadoff man. Maybe that's what lulled Chavez into thinking he was irreplaceable. Now, he knows differently. Wouldn't that require him to actually be replaced? I mean, I'm all for wake-up calls, but not at the detriment of the team and it's goals...

Chaney's Suspends Himself for Goon Attack

Bringing up Knight is interesting...maybe I'm just missing something here, but I'm not hearing the outcry for Chaney to get kicked out of Temple like I heard for Knight to get the axe in Indiana...

An error-filled exercise in selective memory

rcade - I just don't see it as a "lucky break", simply because there is a specific rule set aside for that instance. The lucky break would be if there were no rule, the officials got it wrong and the Pats went on to win. However, there was a rule for it and the officials got it right. Also, spare the homer talk...I don't like the Patriots anymore then I like the Raiders, so I don't give a crap who would have won that game.

Yeah, great article ripping a city that he's admittedly never been to. That's some fine journalism there...

"I got stabbed in the back."

The funny thing is, had he gotten that 1 yard TD instead of Hasselbeck's sneak, he would have tied for the league lead in rushing, not won the thing outright. At any rate, he only has to point to all of his carries for loss this year as to why he didn't get the rushing crown. I'm not sure how many times Curtis Martin was caught behind the line, but Alexander was enough for it to be a factor in this issue.
