George Mikan dies at age 80: The first dominant big man in the history of the NBA has died. As the leader of the first dynasty in league history, he forced the rules to be modified, so teams would stand a chance against him and his Minneapolis Lakers, and it still just barely worked. R.I.P.

"I'm black. They don't build stuff for blacks.": Barry Bonds gives his perspective on: Racism in Boston (which he says doesn't come from first hand experience); his continual walks; statues, and other things.

NFL Owners fear the death of the Golden Goose: It's a classic battle of Socialism vs. Capitalism...just be glad there are no nukes involved this time around.

But, what about the fundamentals?: Candace Parker, who will attend the U of Tennessee next year, has won the McDonalds High School All-American Game Dunk Contest. Will this be the beginning of the end for sound fundamentals in the women's game, a la the men's game over the last 20 years? How soon before more women are able to play above the rim with consistency, and possibly get more attention for their game?

Manning re-signs with Colts: and gets a whopping $34.5 million signing bonus, according to reports. What's this about a salary cap in the NFL? With what the Redskins have been doing recently, and now this, the salary cap system seems to be under assault. How will these teams be able to stay competitive giving this much money out to just a couple players?

Oops: Looks like a couple would-be wide receiver free agents aren't as available as they'd hoped. Terrell Owens and Dennis Northcutt, who were able to void the final three years of their respective contracts, missed the filing deadline for paperwork, and are now stuck on their present teams. Methinks some agents are getting canned today.

What a turkey: David Fleming of ESPN.com has offered up his list of the NFL turkeys for 2003. As sad as it makes me, I would agree with who he gives the top turkey award to. Who else deserves to have a pic in the "Turkeys of 2003" calendar?

Jags Punter does a bad Gimli impersonation: Chris Hanson, Pro Bowl punter for Jacksonville, cleaved his leg this afternoon while using an axe in the team's locker room. The axe was there, along with a tree stump, as a motivational tool for the team, with the slogan "keep chopping wood". Things just keep getting better and better for my teams this year...

Jim Harrick out as UGA head basketball coach.: The school has also decided to voluntarily remove itself from the SEC and NCAA Tournaments. This brings up the question: What was Harrick thinking in that interview with Dick Vitale last Tuesday? When he said the truth would come out, is this really what he meant?

It pays to watch Norwegian soccer.: First there was the Atlanta Hawks' promise to refund money to season ticket holders if (or more likely when) they miss the playoffs, and now this. Anyone know of other odd (or ingenious) ways to get butts in the seats?

MLB teams in dire dinero dilemma.: Apparently, there's a couple MLB teams that might not make it to the impending doom that will likely cut short this baseball season. El Commish does not name names, but says one of the teams "will surprise you". Could anything really surprise us anymore when it comes to America's old pastime?
