Olympic protocol

Yeah, I think in this day and age if someone is truly interested in not getting results for a sport event they should use self-control and not look at the Internet, and especially not website dedicated to sport.

I do this often during footie season because I record Premiere League games to watch at more convenient times. If I learn a result then it is my own fault.

That all being said I promise to not reveal any Olympic results ... because I highly doubt I will be watching.

Too Much Penn State?

YYM, and probably a majority of that discussion was sport-related.

Too Much Penn State?

I was another advocate of less coverage of Sandusky here, but this is a sports story again. "Sandusky convicted" wasn't -- "Penn State hit with bowl ban and scholarship reductions" is.

This I will agree with, but the problem is that it seems to inevitably turn into "BURN IN HELL JOE!"

I get that child rape is one of (if not the) most horrible crimes there is, but rcade this seems to be your #1 issue on SportsFilter, Twitter, etc. It is apparently a very important issue to you personally. And more power to you for fighting it. But other than the bowl ban/scholarships/etc/etc I personally don't see it as a sport issue. *shrug*

It appears that Penn State was the subject of five front page posts in July and one in June.

Feature request... a way to click to see "< OLDER" posts. I went to see what percentage of posts are about Penn State over those two months you mentioned (minus the huddles) but couldn't see past July 06.

Along this same line, can we add the year to the stamps, especially in the Locker Room?

I have stayed out of those other threads (changed the channel, so to speak) but it seems like each turn is a new thread and I am not so sure all of the non-sport parts of this story couldn't stay on one thread. It isn't like there are so many posts being made that they roll off the front page. I agree that my comment in that thread should have been here in the Locker Room and for that I apologise. In the future would it be okay to do something like MetaFilter does and state "Locker Room" with a link to bring a side discussion here?

Too Much Penn State?

"...and forgotten more quickly."

This whole thing is horrible, and disgusting and sad, etc, etc, etc but I would like to suggest that for this all to be "forgotten more quickly" that this be the last thread on the front page. I get it, this is very upsetting, but it is only tangentially sport related at this point and all these threads are starting to feel like ax grinding. Perhaps those who feel the need to continue on the subject write a column about their feelings?

I agree with the more vocal of you about this topic, seriously. My family lives in western Pennsylvania, and I am far from a JoePa apologist. Some of my family members have ties to the institution as academics, and most of them care very little for college athletics. I haven't said a single word in any of these many threads. Not because I support anything the university has done or did do; in fact the opposite. But I have been avoiding SpoFi over the last few weeks because I am not interested in rehashing the subject. It is being covered elsewhere.

There are times when I am on MetaFilter and a sport-related thread pops up and it is obvious that it would be better embraced here on Sportsfilter. This topic is now one I think the opposite is true.

I watched the press conference live, and I what I am glad to have heard is that the athletes in the football program who are students (and eligible) will be able to transfer elsewhere without having to sit out for any period of time. What I wish is this was the case always, like it is for the coaches currently.

I know there are some people here who appear will only be happy when every brick of Penn State is removed and the institution closed, but that isn't going to be accomplished on a sport web site.

Problem posting with Google Chrome

I too am using 20.0.1132.57 (Mac / 10.7.4) and I had no trouble posting a comment, or seeing the live preview.

First thing I would do is clear all cookies associated with Sportsfilter.

Are you using any plugins/extensions that might interfere?

Next I would suggest deactivating or deleting any plugins/extensions.

The plugin that messes with most is NoScript. I forget it is installed and then spend a few moments scratching my head when something isn't displaying or I can't log in to a site.

Politics and Sports

I am frustrated by what seems like a lack of courtesy to even respond to bug posts, etc. I posted this on 19 November, and it took 6 days to receive a comment, and that was from justgary, and only after I had given up on getting a response. I mention the hard break bug in the NFL playoff pick'em thread and still no response. A few years back justgary and I were begging to have the wiki linked to the homepage, and it seemed to take months before it suddenly appeared. I don't recall ever being notified, and by the time it showed up I was so frustrated by the lack of response I stopped caring about updating or maintaining the wiki.

I have been asking for years now for my 2005 Locker Room interview to be revived. I was under the impression that was doable. If not, than I apologise.

Funny thing is the site could use all of our participation when it comes to posting; however in addition to my comments above I don't participate because I don't like the posts that are here. I know I should do something about it, but since I don't feel a part of the site because of what I outlined above, I am uninspired to do so.

If justgary has resolved to be more involved and rcade has resolved to work on the things he said above then I will do what I can to be less of a squeaky wheel and more of a participant.

I am not mad, I just hate feeling like everything falls on deaf (hearing impaired?) ears or that I am being ignored.

Politics and Sports

No coup, rcade. I emailed you some of my concerns before I saw your comment above. You're right. it's your site, you pay the bills. SpoFi is what one makes of it, but at the same time, what it has become is not what I recall joining.

If justgary and kirk have taken a back seat because they have been too busy to participate then fine, but perhaps you should find new moderators if that is the case. And if Kirk isn't available for site design, and you can't fix the bugs then perhaps it is time to find someone to help there. If they feel that their voices aren't being heard (like mine concerning bugs and archives) then perhaps that is something to discuss.

Angry responses like the one directed at me above don't help me in my opinion that this is a one-man show and if one doesn't like it they can leave.

Did Troy Play Dirty?

Well, he didn't blame these phantom Troy incidents on the loss. He did admit the Steelers deserved the win. But it bothers me that he is accusing a player I respect and stating these kicking incidents as fact when there doesn't seem to be any proof. No mention of the tackle on Welker, which as you say yerfatma, was a facemask, and no mention of the punched ball at the end, which is arguably illegal.

Thanks everyone. I already let it drop with him, and will simply wear my Steelers shirt at work as a silent reminder to him :)

I like the Locker Room. As much as I love the site, I don't have as much time as I'd like to keep up with main site, but I make sure I at least read all of the LR posts. Here is where the community lives.

I'm also embarrassed to say that I don't understand the huddle, so I don't participate. it seems like it is a date specific post about the days topics, whereas the LR is a place to discuss the community aspects of SpoFi.

Should SportsFilter Think of the Children?

chiming in to say I agree with what bperk said: "I like moderating that keeps the discussions civil and mostly intelligent, but not censored".

In fact, rcade, since this has come up as an issue, I would suggest adding a checkbox on the signup page making someone state for the record they are over 13. I know that kerrycindy is the parent with the account, but I think since we aren't PG-13 it is probably a good idea to state that somewhere, so parents can make the decision for themselves without having to comb the archives, etc.

I even had the text smaller (using Firefox), but at readable font sizes I can't see anything to the right below the ads.

There's a lot of real estate to the left of this form (side nav on rest of site) that probably could be reclaimed. Or change the css level for the ads?

Completely different entities. There is a link in the opening paragraph of the wiki where the creation of SpoFi is mentioned. Personally I think that is enough.

Thanks for the linky love, rcade. Now I hope folks will take the time to add to the wiki. For the record, people can simply type http://sportsfilter.info to get to the wiki as well.

Comment Formatting

I imagine that rcade has a lot on his plate as it is, and The New Sportsfilter seems to be mostly roll-your-own, so delegating is probably nearly impossible at this point.

I also think rcade has done a great job of patching the site back together to look like the old one. There are a few "must have" features that would be nice to see such as the new comments, but all-in-all I am happier than I was a few months ago. I seem to visit the actual site rather than just the feed. I'm still interested in seeing a wiki implemented, but that's probably because I did a lot of reading learning to use it and trying to make it look nice. It is certainly not a "must have" .... like ... say... MY INTERVIEW!!! *ahem* sorry... where was I? Oh, yes... I think rcade's doing a bang-up job, but there's work to be done ... so quit moonlighting as a bloody MLS reporter.

rcade newest MLS reporter

Yet another thing that is effed up about MLS. They play in the summer while most other leagues are on break. I often hear the excuse is "who would want to play in Chicago in December?" I don't follow MLS so i had no clue that DC United was the closest team to a person in Florida. It seems that the solution now is simple. Close down the Chicao Fire (and all the other northern teams) and play in the south during the normal footie season.
