What an empty, headline-grabbing gesture this is.
Who cares? Everyone that's followed the NBA understands the importance of number 23, and if you wear that number, you bring judgment on yourself, lol. People will hold you to a higher standard, or assume you don't deserve to use it. Let teams retire it if they wish. I mean, in the NHL if you want to wear 99 or 66 or 4 or 9 or any particularly iconic number, you can, and nobody really bats an eye anymore. This is because hockey fans will never agree on who the greatest of all time is.
In summary: this is stupid, Lebrawn. Use your time better.

rcade: yes that's basically right, estamos would be translated to 'is' in English in this case, but it has to be plural like that to match Honduras, the people, in the way the translator was referring, I think. My spanish is more than a bit rusty though. I gather el mundial is just short for el copa mundial, so yeah.

Hope springs eternal in the Motor City. Detroit, for all its woes, has compiled an impressive series of powerhouse basketball and hockey teams that have won a lot of rings in the last two decades. Even the Tigers have been in the playoffs (I don't follow baseball, at all).
Oh, and the Redskins need to change their name and logo already, U of Miami (Ohio) did it, changed it to Redhawks and nobody is complaining. So for them to lose to a team that was 0-19 coming in is just karma.

It is possible that the 12 year old who got bodyslammed is a punk who really did take a cheap shot at this other kid, and deserved to be corrected in a reasonable fashion, i.e. verbal correction and perhaps being made to run some laps. The problem with youth sports is the adults.

There is no defense of Chief Wahoo. At best he should be an object lesson about the institutionalized, casual racism that still exists today. I think the best answer is to rename them the Cleveland Tribe, and change their mascot to be in honor and remembrance of the area tribes that got so royally fucked when their land was taken. They could do a mascot in honor of Tecumseh, for example. It has to happen, now is the time.

This is why the best thing slashdot has ever done is to automatically name all users who post anonymously a so-called 'Anonymous Coward.' Corollary: John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. Sometimes, in spite of my libertarian instinct for privacy and freedom of speech, I wonder if it would be such a bad thing to require people online to post using their real names. It would put a stop to a lot of the pointless dickwaving and internet tough guy oneupmanship that destroys so many 'discussions' online.

robi8259: did you actually read the article? Is blah blah blah your summary of the article or simply your reaction to the way I worded the post? I thought the article made some good explanations of how the mechanics of the swing could be aided by a physical guide. What would really help would be side by side evidence carefully detailing the evolution of his swing, especially up to the point in 2001 where he got the final iteration of the armor and really started his record breaking pace.

The Dayton Daily News refuses to cover the National Hockey League in any meaningful way. They have at least two beat reporters just covering the Cincinnati Reds. About ten years ago I wrote one of the sports reporters about why they didn't cover hockey more, and he said 'there's not enough interest' and that turned me off to local sports news. I only read it to follow the local college sports teams, nothing more. Our sports page is basically mutating into a local sports digest with opinions and stuff on outdoors activities. They print national stories as a matter of course, but who cares?

It's about time they got rid of MacLean - he has made a lot of questionable draft picks and traded off a ton of decent talent - eg Mike Sillinger. Ok, well, not a ton, but some. I mean, they seem to be so impatient with this thing that they don't let the players stay together long enough to mesh. I've been to a lot of their home games, and several of the draft picks - Picard for example, have been very disappointing. Their other moves haven't been very good either - the acquisition of Foote was terrible. He's washed up, he can't skate, he doesn't fit in the new NHL. Fedorov has been pretty much a wash too. If I were Rick Nash, I would want to get out of Columbus as soon as possible. Before they fired Gallant, it seemed like everybody in the front office was a Prince Edward Island crony of MacLean's from back in the day or something. And don't even get me started about Hitchcock.

It's one thing to say you disagree with or disapprove of a lifestyle choice, it is another thing to say you hate someone for it. Based on the comments in this thread, I wonder how many NBA players share Hardaway's feelings. Truly sad.

It's not only the media that focuses on the negative. I tend to agree with this sentiment, however, the media also drives audience attention in predictable ways. Evidence: Jon Benet Ramsey or whatever. Who really wants to hear about that? There is market demand for it, to be sure, but that doesn't mean a whole lot - stories are often fabricated ex nihilo. Evidence: Bush national guard documents on CBS (only thing that comes to mind at the moment)

I'm pretty sure the Yankees paid for the stadium themselves, which is a sight better than what the Reds did, bilking the Hamilton County taxpayers to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars whilst lining the pockets of Carl Lindner and the other minority owner of the club. Not anything to get angry about, of course.

I remember December of 03. Bengals v Browns, if the Bengals won they had a shot at the playoffs. They didn't make the playoffs, but before the second quarter was done the Bengals and Browns fans in the nosebleed section I was in were in a throwdown brawl. Some guy threw a beer at another guy and then the mania ensued. It was surreal. I flagged down an officer of the law and soon enough they were in there swinging their batons and regulating on the asses of the drunken idiots. If any stadium needs this, it's possibly Paul Brown stadium. I hear Eagles fans are dicks too.

The answer to not being able to watch OLN on cable is to get a satellite TV provider like DirectTV. We get all the FoxSportsNet channels that cover the Blue Jackets, and we get OLN for the rest of the nationally televised games. My friends who have Comcast in Michigan not only have FSN Detroit, which lets them see basically every Wings game, but they also have OLN on the standard Comcast package up there.

We need to give the guy a break. He broke the record of the most legendary man in baseball- That should be worth praising Jesus Jumping Jack Christ, how many Bay-area lackeys does Bonds have on his fucking payroll shilling for him on internet message boards? The man is clearly "not an idiot" and he had to know that the shit he was using wasn't Cortisone or something equally benign. He has no excuse, there will be an asterisk next to his name, even if not officially, at least metaphorically (you can't count on the insular MLB ruling council to do anything that I would respect). I do not often do this, but I think the quality of the intellect of some of the posters in this thread absolutely merits it, so I will also type it as slowly as possible so that they can understand: BONDS WILL NEVER BE ON THE SAME LEVEL AS RUTH, AARON, DIMAGGIO, MAYS, MANTLE, ROBINSON, CLEMENTE, WILLIAMS, OR EVEN PETE ROSE (SERIOUSLY I COULD GO ON) AND I FOR ONE WILL NEVER GIVE HIM HIS DUE. In sum, Barry Bonds is a mendacious, selfish gloryhound who has no love for the game, only love for himself. Bonds has utterly shamed a game that already has enough skeletons in its closet. Go home Barry, you've done enough damage.
